Peanut butter manufactured under the "Peter Pan" and "Great Value" brands with the product code 2111 by ConAgra Foods (NYSE: CAG) is still making people sick, according to the latest report by the Centers for Disease Control. Although the entire batch of tainted peanut butter has long been pulled from store shelves, it's difficult to remove from consumer's shelves (especially as the two-dollar refund isn't exactly a money-maker). And processed peanut butter (as we well know) seems to last forever; I wouldn't be surprised if first-graders are still toting contaminated sandwiches to school in their lunchboxes next fall.So as my college track buddy Josephine always said around October when the sniffles would break out around the locker room, "sickness is coming." Sickness is still coming, and likely will continue for some time; 628 cases in a whopping 47 of our 50 U.S. states have been reported, with more than 200 new since March when the CDC last reported (the peanut butter recall was announced in mid-February 2007).
ConAgra won't be producing peanut butter from its Sylvester, Ga. plant again for a while, as renovations to fix the moisture problems blamed for the contamination are still underway; but the company will reintroduce its Peter Pan brand in July. But with customers still sickening, will anyone go back? Would you eat Peter Pan peanut butter again?

The United States FDA is making us all sick. Yes, they point out when we get salmonella or E. Coli bacteria making us sick, but do we ever hear of them pointing out all the chemicals in our food making us sick? Our foods have so many chemicals used to preserve our foods for better shelf life that are making us sick. Do they do anything about that? Here is their way around it. The consumer has the choice to buy organic foods without preservatives and artificial additives. What a bunch of bull! As Americans, we should be able to walk into any supermarket, buy something, and know that we are not poisoning our bodies. Of course the FDA would say, in small amounts these preservatives won't hurt you. BULL! Then tell me, why in history there are more cancers more autoimmune sicknesses, more nervous system, and digestive illnesses??? This country's "Food and Drug Administration" is only administering more poisons so that they can make more money selling their drugs! How warped can the US be!

I like Peter Pan low fat peanut butter and I have not been able to find any other brand that I like - so I will eat it again. I miss it. (Of course, I did not get sick.) Contamination can happen with any foods we buy at any time, so why should we worry in the future about this peanut butter any more than any other product. In fact after all the attention Peter Pan will probably be the safest.

Of course I'll still Peter Pan...
All of the others just suck to me. I think that was the only brand name food item that I was loyal to. I still have an unopened jar of it sitting in a cupboard from the recalled batch. Don't know why, really. Hope it comes back soon. If I have to buy any more Skippy or Jif or whatever I will not be happy...

I miss Peter Pan Honey Roast desperately. When I moved to Idaho for a year I had it shipped to me because I could not get it in Boise. Nothing else does the job for me and I can't wait until it is back. When the recall happened I actually had two half empty jars and 4 unopened jars. They all had the 2111 label on them. Since we had eaten most of the first two jars and not gotten sick I really wanted to finish them. I have a 2 year old so I decided not to chance it but I will be so happy to see it back.

I got very sick, felt like death and when a billion dollar conglomerate like Conagra poisons the public they need to be punished severly. The only way is to sue them for every dime they have. The idiot person #9 you sure you did noy eat some 2111 and it gave you brain damage.

Conagra, who ever is in charge of this conglomerate has the selfishness attitude of a 2 year old. Imagine that you poisened someone and killed someone , no killed many and poisened thousands. Now you asked me a man you poisened and took no responsibility for the poisening if I would support your greedy ass hell I WILL SHOVE A SIZE 11 UP YOUR ASS. I realize these filthy rich owners can pay enough money to bring there product back in July and still have money to burn but the only way to have honor and courage and committment is being responsible and all their money can't buy that!!

I don't shop at Wal-Mart and I don't buy Peter Pan peanut butter. The former, because I'm boycotting the store (still), and the latter because I prefer other brands of peanut butter (I especially like Trader Joe's natural or organic or whatever it's called). But if I managed to catch salmonella from any peanut butter, it would be very difficult to stop my cheerful "Whoa! Salmonellapoopy! Hydrogen Sulfide smell! commentary even as I endured the infection.". And, of course, I'd demand to see the bacterial plates, or offer to streak them myself (or call a friend who has access to all the appropriate microbiological media and supplies).
Needless to say, contracting salmonella from one jar of peanut butter would ONLY have me trying to do culture and isolation on the rest of the jar, and wouldn't stop me from buying the same stuff (but different lots) two weeks later.

The food safety situation isn't going to get better any time soon. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (O157: H7 and similar strains) evolved in the last 20 to 30 years, and we are basically stuck with them. Salmonella and Shigella have always been with us, and they won't be going away any time soon. Norovirus has become more and more common (the vomiting illness so common at banquets and on cruise ships). We still don't have Cryptosporidium or Giardia completely under control.
The good news: Cholera and Typhoid are very nearly controlled anywhere there is adequate water treatment. Even better news: these diseases still usually respond to older antibiotics.
But as long as there is moisture in food processing plants (and that's a given, considering water is either an ingredient or used for cleaning), as long as food processing is done on a large scale, and as long as food handling (from harvesting through restaurant servers) is done by people who are paid little and don't get sick pay, we are going to continue to have large-scale outbreaks of foodborne illnesses and recalls due to contamination.
Don't think it was that much better 30 or 50 years ago--back then it just got called "the runs", or "the stomach flu", and supportive care was about all there was.
The last known case of botulism from commercially prepared goods was 30 years ago--at least until last week or so, when four people who ate a chili sauce for hot dogs became ill. And 50 years ago, there were regular announcements from County Extension Agents to remind people to can low-acid items properly so that botulism wouldn't be a problem. Low-acid home-canned products were also usually well-boiled prior to consumption to further reduce the risk. It wasn't just a lack of microwaves that led to so much overcooked food, but the very real risk of botulism.
Unless you butcher your own meat and poultry, and do it extremely carefully (almost like performing surgery), your meat and poultry will probably put you at risk for E. coli or Salmonella infection unless it is cooked and handled properly. Machines just aren't as careful as your grandmother or great-grandmother might have been while gutting Sunday dinner.
I do have a solution to the problem, one I would think was WAY cool, but probably isn't very practical: ALL canned items should be sold in autoclavable containers, and all homes should be equipped with small-to-medium-sized autoclaves. Then you could sterilize anything you liked, as long as it was in an autoclavable container. Okay, so I like autoclaving things.

I was hospitalized due to being poisoned by eating peter pan peanut butter. I love peanut butter! I fainted in front of the hosptal! The nurses ran outside and picked me up off the sidewalk and put me in a wheel chair and had to rush me into the ER dept and put IV into me for several hours to get my color to come back etc. We had no idea I had been poisoned. It was a very scary experience! My twin 3 year old grand daughters got sick and my daughter was in and out of the hosptal with them along with my 5 year old grand son at least once a week for about 2 years! My son had to be rushed to the ER dept and we were there all night with him he almost died! My mother had a stroke and had a major hospital stay after eating it! My grand daughter went into convulsions at 3 am and scared my daughter half to death she had extreme fever! All this, because CON AGRA was neglecting thier responsibilities at one of thier plants. A rep from CON AGRA called me recently and informed me that there was a dirty water leak from the roof in thier plant that was dripping into the peanut butter as it went down the conveyer. It did not drip into all the jars so that is why not all people who ate it got sick! Do not make judgements about things you know nothing about! If you got as sick as I did and my family members did, you would expect compensation as well. I have been informed that we can probably expect future medical problems from this poisoning such as renal failure. There is no way to ever compensate enough to anyone for that kind of pain and mysery! It should have never happened. And I dont think CONAGRA should be trusted to feed people anymore--PERIOD!
