While I don't have a particular ear for Sonic Youth's unique and revered brand of dissonant alternative rock, I'll always have a place of respect for them in my heart -- for years, they were my late brother's favorite band. In fact, I have a distinct memory of using a Sonic Youth poster (featuring that vaguely creepy orange yarn chew toy from the cover of 1992's Dirty album) to cover a hole in my brother's wall that was the direct result of an scuffle we'd had when he was 16 and I was 21 (i.e., old enough to know better). My brother was also a coffee aficionado, working in several local coffee shops during his college years, so a bittersweet smile crossed my face this morning when I read that Thurston Moore and the other members of the venerable act were part of a project for the chain of all coffee chains, Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX).
A compilation record will feature the favorite tracks of celebrities, including singer-songwriter Beck, Arrested Development star (and Ellen DeGeneres' long-term companion) Portia de Rossi, and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, all of whom will write a small note about why the selected song is a favorite. In addition, the band itself will record one exclusive song for the album.
With your scone and your caramel macchiato, you can pick up a fresh mix of some of Sonic Youth's most beloved classics. In an interview with Pitchfork, Moore jokes that "Starbucks is the new record, store, right?" Paul McCartney would likely agree.

I find it interesting that only comments regarding the "blog" want to be heard. I hope Starbucks crashes and burns. Even if they dislike what we have to do in a war we didn't start couldn't you give the troops a stinking cup of coffee?

Starbucks is great! And by the way, a quick search on the web shows that Starbucks has a corporate policy of only donating to local nonprofits, so it under it's policy it had to say no to the military. However, each week many employees donate their free bag of coffee to troops. And the guy that started this whole rumor has apologized to Starbucks.

Jeez, J.C.M., you STILL think that rumor about Starbucks refusing to send coffee to the troops is TRUE? You believe everything you read in forwarded emails? Get with it.
I think it's pretty smart of Starbucks to be using their stores to sell music and movies. I have two kids and work full time, so I have zero time to go browsing for that kind of stuff. And I pretty much agree with their aesthetic, so it's like they act as my editor, too. I love it.

I work for Starbucks now, and I was also working for them at the time of the "troops" debate, and the fact of the matter is the whole "won't send coffee to the troops" is a rumor. It was then and it still is today. Many Starbucks partners send coffee to Iraq weekly along with many other items. Starbucks donates more as a company than Dunkin Donuts, Panera Bread, and 7-11 combined! Try that on for size.

I thank Starbucks for their high standards! I just received an e-mail reply to my question about their rBGH free dairy products. As of May 2007, 51% of the dairy they buy for their U.S. stores is produced without the use of rBGH!!! Go Starbucks!
For those of you who don't understand what rBGH is, it stands for RECOMBINANT BOVINE GROWTH HORMONE. The intended purpose of rBGH is to increase milk production in cows. It's an artificial hormone. Monsanto has fought vigorously for rBGH acceptance with seemingly little concern for the health consequences to cows or humans, or the economic consequences to farmers.
Cows who have been injected with rBGH get inflammation of the udder, or mastitis which can have serious health effects for human health. The defining symptom of mastitis is the presence of pus in milk. --- Starbucks cares enough for it's customers to guard us against this mess! Way to go Starbucks! We thank you!!! Keep up the great work!!! You are the wave of the future!!!

"IS starbucks promoting smoking in the above logo?" The logo combines Starbucks' traditional logo with the album cover of Sonic Youth's "Goo" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goo_%28album%29).

I like Starbucks, I still drink their coffee at home, but I am not the raving Starbucks fan I used to be and find myself not visiting the Starbucks cafes nearly as often. The newer stores have drive-thrus (bad move IMHO), are louder, and have more of a Dunkin Donuts (bleech) feel to them. It's like they put a few tables and chairs in those stores almost as an afterthought. The older existing Starbucks have more of that cafe feel that made Starbucks the phenomenon it is today. If I go to a Starbucks, it's one of these older stores.
I would rather see Starbucks be more like Starbucks and worry less about Dunkin Donuts with their flourescent lights, cheesy plastic tables ala McDonalds, loud and often unclean stores.
OTOH, Panera Bread, with nice atmosphere, free WiFi and coffee that's not as good as Starbucks BUT is OK and offers free refills, is much more of a dangerous direct competitor than Dunkin Donuts! Be careful, Starbucks!

Well, it's good to know that Starbucks allegedly does help support the troops, because our troops are always in my heart.
However, that doesn't make Starbucks coffee any better-tasting nor of better quality. Their coffee tastes to me just like any other so-so coffee out there.
As for the rGBH comment, umm "51%?" Fifty-one percent of the dairy they buy for their U.S. stores is minus the dangerous-to-your-health factor, huh? I guess that means that they care about the health of only 51% of their customers, huh? Hmmm, interesting. Does any person know which category they are in when they go in there? Are there signs with arrows pointing down to "rGBH" and "rGHB-less?" It's comforting to know, at least, that I take my coffee plain. Oh, wait a minute, I hardly patronize the place, anyway, 'cause I buy my own preferred brands and make it at home. If I'm too lazy to make my own coffee, then I may as well kick myself to the curb as worthless.

Regardless of what you feel about Starbucks coffee or politics, they are the one company out there that is doing something positive for music sales. They provide consistently good quality music from artists that typically do not receive radio airplay or often much other hype, ranging from "classic" artists to brand new unknowns. I don't drink a lot of coffee, but I frequent Starbucks just for the CD's. Long live the CD, the music industry and Starbucks!!!

The information about Starbucks not sending coffee to the troops is not true. The two Starbucks closest to my home continually have a "coffee drive" for the troops. Customers can a bag of ground coffe and write a note, using a permanent marker, right on the bag of coffee. The store matches the amount of coffee purchased by customers, and off it goes.

This is a true story. In the summer of 1969, I
was trying-out for the Canarsie High School (in Brooklyn, NY), football team. At the time, I was almost 16 years old, about to enter the 11th
grade. I had recently transferred from Stuyvesant HS in Manhattan, where I was the
starting quarterback on the JV (junior varsity),football team. I had an extremely strong arm for my age, and was able to throw a football almost 70 yards. I was not well received by the players on the Canarsie team, as they
were a tight group of friends that had been playing together for years. I was good enough to challenge for the starting quarterback position, but my
efforts to join the team met with much resistance. The other quarterback, already on the team, was extremely jealous of my talents. Since it was
acknowledged by the coach that I was the better player, and consequently had the inside track for the starting position, the other quarterback went out of his way to physically hurt and humiliate me. There are two specific incidents which I can recall. To this day, they are still ingrained in my
mind, as if they had just happened. One time, I was standing in front of a bunch of thorny bushes. The quarterback's best friend, Michael "Meatball"
Hirschorn, sneakily knelt down behind me, as the quarterback violently shoved me into the sharp bushes. They all laughed and taunted me, as I lay
there bleeding and dazed. Another time I returned to my locker just in time to witness the quarterback urinating into my locker, pissing all over my personal belongings. He turned to me and laughed, "What are you going to do
about it, huh?" I stood there completely stunned, as he walked away, hysterically laughing... This past summer I was at my high school reunion,
where I struck-up a conversation with an old acquaintance. I was informed that this same person, the quarterback who tormented and humiliated me, is
now the owner of Starbucks - Howard Schultz. I remember him as being a ruthless and despicable human being, who would stop at nothing to crush
those who got in his way. It is common knowledge that untold numbers of "mom
and pop" stores have been put out of business by the corporate monster known
as Starbucks. Too, they employ over-sea / underaged child labor to keep their operating costs at a minimum, all the while claiming to know
absolutely nothing about unfair and illegal business practices. I do not patronize Starbucks, and anyone with a social conscience should not
either. Both Howard Schultz and his company epitomize GREED. A leopard never changes its spots...
