San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom has made his share of headlines: In 2004, he ordered the city-county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and he's been outspoken about homelessness, immigration and health care. Now Newsom has a new crusade: bottled water.
Last week, the mayor signed an executive order banning the use of city funds for the purchase of single-serving water bottles, and also banned the sale of bottled water on city-owned property. It's all part of the city's effort to become more environmentally friendly and less wasteful, and residents who sign an online pledge not to buy bottled water can get a free stainless steel water bottle. The city also recently outlawed the use of plastic grocery bags.
In an interview with Newsweek, Newsom said: "These people are making huge amounts of money selling God's natural resources. Sorry, we're not going to be part of it. Our water in San Francisco comes from the Hetch Hetchy [reservoir] and is some of the most pristine water on the planet. Our water is arguably cleaner than a vast majority of the bottled water sold as 'pure'."
While there are no major public companies that sell only bottled water, companies like The Coca Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) could be adversely effected if the anti-bottled water trend catches on nationally. Coke and Pepsi own Dasani and Aquafina, respectively.

It's about time someone is starting to think about how to adress the massive environmental damage caused by the widespread, mindless use of bottled water. We can only hope other state and local governments follow suit.

Learn how to read jr. The sentence reads " Coke and Pepsi own Dasani and Aquafina, respectively. Why stop at bottled water? Why not all bottled drink products?

It's a dangerous precident for polititions to be allowed to make arbitrary decisions about what is "right" for us.

It is not unreasonable to assume that we have to watch the quality of water that we allow into our homes & offices as well as the issue of plastic bottles & the enviornment. I have a full home water filtration system that produces "bottle" quality water at about 1/2cent per gallon. To me, that's just a re-allocation of funds. Instead of spending $800 a year on bottled water, I make if myself and the savings pays for the equipment in a short period of time and helps the enviornment. It's called WateRx. I wouldn't live in a home without locks on the doors and I wouldn't allow water to come into my home with taking responsibility for that as well. We could help the enviornment significantly with systems like WateRx and keep contaminants out of our water outlets. The Mayor of San Fran is concerned about the forever plastic bottle as am I but I'm also concerned about controling the additives and issues that run through my water lines.

I applaud the Mayor for taking this stand - the one comment about politicians making decisions about what is "right" for us is not valid since the mayor only halted the use of city funds and property for the purchase or sale of bottled water. If one pays a dollar a liter for water that is 3.78 a gallon or 28.31 per cubic foot and 19,820 per 700 cubic feet which most municipalities deliver to your house for 20-30 bucks a month.

Why not tell us what color shirt to wear and what toothpaste is "gov't approved". For God's sake, somebody reign in these little dictators and let's remember that we are free men and women, not serfs and shouldn't be subjected to this type of control. Do we need a second revolution to take back or God given, Constitution protected Freedom.

Wow... what can I say? On the one hand I sure would like the oil wasted on plastic to be put in my car (as motor oil and gasoline, btw,) besides we to have filters on our faucets so I see no big loss, but what makes this country great is the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE and this guy is showing his true colors - if it is not his way it is the highway, and I feel his brand of activism will eventually cause the downfall of a good and great nation.

They said the water was safe in my town, too. (Toms River, NJ) Everyone drank it and some people got cancer and various other diseases/illnesses. Granted, that was only a small percent of the population, but I'd rather not take my chance with such ailments. I'll stick with the bottled water.

I never really thought much about the bottled water. I thought that since our city recycles that the bottles are recycled...but it makes sense. Our city's water is not like, uhmm spring water. Basically, it tastes nasty and I really don't want to know what's in it. However, it does make sense to buy larger bottles of water and use a reuseable container for single servings. I can do that! How about you?

First, the decision appears to be based on cogent analsysis and an effort to realize an important goal. That's not "arbitrary". And second, what are our elected representatives and executives to do if not make decisions about what is right for us? It seems to me that is pretty much their entire job description.

Newsom is a huge phony. He acts like he has a concern for the environment, That is unless HE sees money to be made for himself. Ask him about the winery that he is heavily invested in that is being built right now in Napa County in Angwin California. Hundreds of trees were cut down on a very steep hillside so that they could build the winery complete with caves gouged deep into the hillside behind it. Napa county has regulations prohibiting building on steep hillsides like this but of cource when Gavin greased the right palms, he got a variance to build here. Just look up into the hills west of St. Helena for the big scar in the hillside, this is Gavins doing. You can see it from miles away. This phony needs to be brought out into sunlight so the whole world can see him for what he is before he gets into national politics any deeper. We have way too many Gavin Newsoms in American politics all ready. It seems that San Franciscans are a lot like Washinton D.C. when it comes to keeping dirt bag city politicians in office.

Buying bottled water is a rip off.....and it is
not pure at all. just money making proposition.
And all those empty plastic bottles filling the
earth up. Water should be purchased by the gallon
and it should be processed by "reverse osmosis" which Walmart carries for only 65 cents a gallon.
I've used it for years and refilled my clean bottles to carry around with me. And plastic bags
are another irritation. I buy bags for 99 cents
which are canvas and bring them to the grocery store with me and fill them and reuse them again and again. And all those plastic bags for retail
stores...what happen to paper shopping bags.
We did this to ourselves, our earth and made money for the money mad men and corporation. Stop the world I want to get off.
