San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom has made his share of headlines: In 2004, he ordered the city-county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and he's been outspoken about homelessness, immigration and health care. Now Newsom has a new crusade: bottled water.
Last week, the mayor signed an executive order banning the use of city funds for the purchase of single-serving water bottles, and also banned the sale of bottled water on city-owned property. It's all part of the city's effort to become more environmentally friendly and less wasteful, and residents who sign an online pledge not to buy bottled water can get a free stainless steel water bottle. The city also recently outlawed the use of plastic grocery bags.
In an interview with Newsweek, Newsom said: "These people are making huge amounts of money selling God's natural resources. Sorry, we're not going to be part of it. Our water in San Francisco comes from the Hetch Hetchy [reservoir] and is some of the most pristine water on the planet. Our water is arguably cleaner than a vast majority of the bottled water sold as 'pure'."
While there are no major public companies that sell only bottled water, companies like The Coca Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) could be adversely effected if the anti-bottled water trend catches on nationally. Coke and Pepsi own Dasani and Aquafina, respectively.

As much as I applaud Gavin for the enviornmental impact this will make, I also think it is not realistic to think that any health conscious person would want to put tap water in their body. First of all it is acidic as is all bottled water. There are known carcinogens in tap water such as Chlorine and Fluoride and heavy metals. The only way to get really healthy water is to put it through a water generator that splits the water into smaller molecules and alkalizes it and leaves the minerals in but filters out all of the dangerous additives. I was born and raised in SF and would beg to differ about the health of people drinking the City water. We can have healthy water for our whole household by buying a Kangen water machine.
They have been studying the science of water in Japan for over 50 years and they are some of the longest living people on earth. They consider the bottled water we drink as "Dead Water". Ionized Alkaline water is the way to health.

I've been concerned about the quality of my tap water and the cost. I tried regular carbon filter water systems and found this to be expensive as well. I found this company, Jewel. It's a small company but they use a simple black tank with no wire, tanks,salt...but inside it is an activated charcoal blend made from coconuts, the water tastes really wonderful. The good news, it only needs to be changed once every three years

At this time I have done a water test on Fiji and Arrowhead waters. The pH for Fiji is average at 7 the same as the water out of my facuet, the Arrowhead water is low at a pH of 6 (acidic water).
(I will test other bottes of water)
What are we going to do with the plastic bottles when we know not every person is going to recycle them?
I won't drink any of them I drink a water that has a pH of 9(Alkaline water) through a water purifier and put it in a 32 oz. bottle for the day.

Bottled water sure comes in handy when firemen are fighting forest fires, some can take a bottle with them into the woods, they'd look silly carrying the water cooler. I keep it in my jeep during the summer in case I see a wreck or someone needing help. Are people gonna vote for this guy next time? Try banning baggy pants. Looking at some of those rear ends can make you puke!

Another perfect example of a politician trying to "rule" instead of represent the constituents. Hillary Clinton style politics at it's most disgusting.

Please correct your title for this . The mayor of San francico did not "BAN BOTTLRD WATER" as you wrongly post, he ordered the city to stop paying for it. Why do you not use the title "MAYOR OF SAN FRANCISCO BANS WASTING TAXPAYERS MONEY ON BOTTLED WATER".

The mayor of SF is not trying to tell anyone how to live their life. Not where this issue of bottled water is concerned. On this subject, he is absolutely right. It is ridiculous how much we pay per bottle of water, a natural, God given resource. And why should Coke, Pepsi or anyone else make all those millions off of it. And it really is a waste. Cause let's face it, for all those folks who recycle plastic, most of these bottles get canned! For one, if folks do not want but a few sips, the rest is discarded and therefore wasted! And trust me I've seen this tragedy unfold with folks around me and the bottles really add up. Our landfills are filling up even faster now with all these "convenience disposables" and no one thinks about this. And can they be safely recycled anyway? They tell us it is toxic to do this ourselves. Isnt' this scary to anyone else? Someone said, only if you freeze the bottled water it is harmful???? We can safely drink the water that is intially placed in these bottles, but freezing it or reusing the bottle even with more clean, pure water is toxic and harmful? How can it not be toxic, then suddenly turn that way? And using them in the first place isn't dangerous? I heard recently that plastic bottles may be outlawed since they aren't safe to use. Or is this all a ploy? Those who make all the profit from the sales are probably lying when we hear we cannot reuse the bottles. We have to buy new ones. Ha. And the toxicity from them is why they should be banned is an effort to cut down on all the waste by the environmentalists perhaps? So who do you believe? I agree with finding your own source of good water. Whether it's a home filtration, from large bottles (like those used for coolers) of water, a natural stream, etc. and carrying it in a reusable container so waste is greatly reduced. You know it makes more sense. No government foul play in encouraging the drinking of water, just trying to reduce the waste. However, we DO need to research this toxicity thing with the plastics. Could we be subjected to harmful toxins while we are feeling good about recycling? I'll be the first to admit that I have felt many times that those who are all out to pad and pad those pocketbooks do not care who is dying a slow death while they get rich.

Instead of forcing people to drink unhealthy beverages, why not urge the bottled water companies to provide their water in different containers, like capri sun? Why not place recycle bins around for people to dispose their plastic. What about the soda's and juices that are also sold in plastic?
Is the mayor going to offer free water to the people who love the benefits of drinking calorie free beverages? Water cleans out our body of toxins that we're forced to eat in our food. Now, the people are forced to keep these toxins in their bodies so that they can continue to become diseased.
It seems to me that this Mayor is not doing this to benefit the enviroment. People are becoming healthier every day as the awareness of nutrition is growing. This man is more concerned with protecting the multi million dollar medical field. He doesn't want you to realize that our health can be maintained thru the use of natural medicine and water. Talk about being Naive.

The oil that currently exists on the earth will either be burned (i.e. converted into CO2) or put into plastics that will eventually make their way back into the earth. Which do you want? Which is more harmful? I suggest that atmospheric CO2 is more harmful. The energy required to make plastics (i.e. CO2 generated) is only 1/10th the energy contained within the plastics themselves.
Therefore plastics eliminate 90% of the atmospheric CO2 associated with oil.
So next time you purchase a beverage contained within a plastic bottle console yourself that at least this amount of oil isn't going up in smoke.

"Last week, the mayor signed an executive order banning the use of city funds for the purchase of single-serving water bottles". You can still buy a gallon of water and have a reusable water bottle.

mayor newsom seems ignorant or naive about the quality of his city's drinking water. while it is probably as good as or better than most, it still has impurities which should be avoided for health reasons. the bottled water industry is a joke since the vast majority of all bottled water available in stores is drawn right out of some local area's public supply. tap filters help but have limitations. i choose distilled water available in most walmarts 99.9% pure.

Galvin not worried about trees. Ban plastic bags so they can cut more trees to make paper bags. how smart can you get. Trees help the enviroment, handle greenhouse gases.

For years my husband has been trying to get me to move to California. Now, I actually have a reason that I'd like to go. In response to number 4, don't we vote for these politicians to help make the decisions of what the people want? Ordinary people don't have much of a chance to put into action what we want done. Gavin Newsom is making a great effort at trying to help our environment. If that means a few inconveniences for me, then I figure I shouldn't have had those conveniences in the first place; because look what it's done to our planet. At least his efforts have a good reason behind them and aren't that inconvenient. There are still alternatives. It's not like he's leaving you high and dry. Way to go Newsom!

Have you ever noticed the same people who have no problem paying about $4./gal for water are the same ones calling our President names? What kind of idiot actually buys water, when you can easily hook up a filter to your kitchen tap, and have your filtered water for just a penny or so? 'Frisco's been a lost cause for years now anyway. You voted him in, you deal with the faghag.

To Hal C who believes it is bad when politicians decide what is right for us---this is what everyone seems do be adoring al gore for doing the same thing. I applud this mayor for doing this. Bottled water is the biggest waste of money and resources. I see bleeding heart liberals, environmentalists and the poor drinking bottled water. If you cant afford food, you shouldnt be drinking bottled water. Bottled water hurts the environment in many ways. It takes oil to produce the plastic bottles and case wrappers (this may be a suprise to many democrats). It takes oil to transport the water via truck. And if the bottles end up in the trash rather than the recycling, this is even worse. Anyone who votes democrat or hates Bush because of enviromental reasons, yet drinks bottled water, is an uneducated hypocrite and shouldn't be allowed to vote.

I don't think so called "Mayor" should have the right to tell us what we can and can't drink. If you want to ban something why don't you ban smoking or drinking acholic drinks? Smoking cigarettes is much more dangerous to your health than drinking a bottle of water. Ask youself, can I die from drinking bottled water or a cigarette? 1,200 die everyday from smoking those foul cancer sticks. Alchol has killed many people and broken up many homes. Has water ever done that. I think this weirdo mayor should be stopped before he starts telling everyone what to eat, where to go, and with whom we can see. Friends this is America and we can't let this happen because if we do what will be next?

On the one hand, I applaud reducing plastic bottle use. On the other hand, when in a public place and needing to buy something to drink, I would prefer a bottled water (even though it's a rip) over a bottled soda (also a rip but with calories). Is the Mayor going to make public water available in public places?
