Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling is scheduled to be published by Scholastic Press (NASDAQ: SCHL) on July 21, and some fans are speculating that Harry will die. I am quite confident in telling you that he won't, for several reasons.
1. The artistic.
Experienced authors will tell you that a satisfying ending is one that, after it happens, readers will see as inevitable, even if they didn't see it coming. For example, the ending of Sixth Sense, while a shocker to many (including me), worked because it neatly tied up loose threads we'd momentarily lost sight of. The ending completed the Bruce Willis' character arc.
Rowling has not established the need for someone to sacrifice his life so that Voldemort might die. In fact, she has already given Harry's parents and Dumbledore to the cause. Harry's death would be gratuitous, and, most importantly, inconsistent with the rest of the saga. Harry is the viewpoint character, and it is our vicarious enjoyment of his overcoming obstacles that gives the series such impact. It's hard to enjoy the denouement of a dead character.
Most importantly, though, Harry is not a flawed character seeking redemption through sacrifice. He is an innocent predestined to conquer the wicked AND LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
2. The practical.
If Rowling were to kill off her hero in the final book, it would not only diminish sales of this volume, but horribly impact the future sales of the series. Knowing that Harry was to die, (and who on Earth would not know of this plot twist?), would change the reader's experience, robbing each bit of conflict of its gravitas. Plus, fans would revolt. Arthur Conan Doyle learned this lesson when he tried to kill off Sherlock Holmes -- some plot reversals fans will simply not accept.
3. The financial.
With two more films on the planning board (including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, due for release July 11th by Warner Brothers, a division of Time Warner, NYSE:TWX) and a theme park in development, I can't believe these companies would invest so much in a closed-end storyline. And while Rowling may have all the money she needs, keeping the tale open-ended is a much shrewder business decision.
So I'm not worried about Harry. My prediction -- he'll defeat Voldemort with Snape's help, assume Dumbledore's position as head of Hogworts, marry Jenny Ginny and stand as best man at Ron and Hermione's wedding.
Harry Potter can't die. Trust me.

In response to #18: "One cannot live while the other survives." If Harry has to die for Voldemort to die... The prophecy would be invaild. One obviously lives while the other dies.
Good usually triumphs over evil... so I think Harry will survive. I don't think that a character who dies at the end will diminish sales... As long as the rest of the series is great. Whatever the ending... it'll be great. ^_^

Fun discussion! Here I am a crazy-busy middle-aged lawyer and I can't WAIT 'ti the new book gets here! (Not to mention, I am reading this thread even though I do NOT have time!) You are all so creative in your thoughts about the story. What fun! Just one comment, though, re the idea that "Harry has to die b/c JK Rowling doesn't want any more books in the series." The international copyright laws are strong enough that if she doesn't want any more books, they can't and won't be written until long after she (and most of us) are dead ourselves. Anyone who tried to do it would be sued within an inch of their lives. Not only that, who would bother reading unauthorized and illegitimate sequels? Rowling brings the magic to the page. Just a thought for your consideration.

Also, it seems strange that another loved one of Harry would die and he would survive. Then he would have nothing to live for. Ron and Hermoine are loved equally by Harry and by all fans, so it seems that Rowling would not kill off just one.

Harry will die at the end of the series, but as a old man thinking back on his life. All the books have been written from Harry's point of view (if you have noticed). He will have married Ginny and have dozens of children and grandchildren. Ron and Hermione will be married. Neville will go back to Hogwarts to teach Herbology. Snape will die to protect Harry, to prove once and for all that he is good. But with a very evil side. As much as i don't want to admit it Dumbledore is dead. JK Rowling said so herself.

Ok...I agree and disagree with all of you. “Either must die at the hand of the other, for neither can live while the other survives.” This hints that only one party need die to satisfy the prophecy. And since the story isn’t called “Voldemort and the Deathly Hallows,” it’s looking good for Harry. Also, as to Harry having a piece of horcruxe in him, I too thought about that but answer this...why would Voldemort put a piece of his soul in Harry knowing that he was going to kill him as a baby?? I don't think he would, at least not intentionally. Snape will die saving Harry I think...if for no other reason than to prove Dumbledore was right about him. Then take your pic Ron, Ginny, or Hermione one of them has to die. that's my two bits.

OK come on ppl!!! Harry is NOT a horcrux. There are sooooo many reasons but I will just give you this one: Do you remember the graveyard secene in the fourth book? (How could you forget?) Remember when Voldemort and Harry's spells get like stuck together or w/e cuz the feather in their wands came from the same source? Voldemort was using AVADA KEDAVRA!!! Voldemort would not try to kill something that had part of his soul.

I like Harry too and certainly do not want him to die, but don't you think he would live on in everyone hearts and be happier on the other side with his parents, then try to live up to his name and the boy who lived for the rest of his life? The legacy that someone leaves can never fade, but wrong actions in the future can kill want herosim a person accomplishes. Like Frodo, he did a great thing in Lord of the Rings by destroying the ring, but he couldn't live in the normal everyday world after that and I don't think Harry could either. Knowing that you will never be able to top killing Voldemort can seriously hurt Harrys adult life. And I would have much more closer in this series if they both died then wondering what could happen next. And guess what, there is no next.

Well, Brits love a good bloodbath with their literature (Titus Andronicus to Popcorn). Just because it says that ONE has to die doesn't mean that BOTH won't die. We've all seen Gladiator, right?

If Harry has to die to stop the series continuation, how about him just losing his magical powers in the fight with voldemort? Really simple and series can't continue with a muggle Harry, right? Happy ending with a family (Ginny or otherwise) but not magical. Just a quick, off the cuff, thought.

Harry can't die. He's destined to go off to that never, never land and do his thing of being the greatest wizard around. To kill him off would be the most dastardly thing to do. His fans, me included, want to think of him being headmaster and teaching his wizardry to new recruits.

To Paula: I LIKE your conclusion. Very, very good. I had been thinking that Snape is actually about as nasty as we are lead to believe but had left the deatheaters because, as Dumbledore knew and we will find out in #7, Voldemort did something evil to Snape's mother.(Why else introduce her in #6?) So Snape hates Harry, but Snape hates Voldemort even more. I think Dumbledore will rise like his familiar, Fawkes the Phoenix. I agree with others that RAB is Sirius' brother. I do not agree that Harry is the last horocrux site. Too dangerous to put that in a one-year-old who could have succumbed to any number of things growing up. I think at least one remaining horocrux is hidden in Hogwarts. Why else would Tom Riddle have gone back and asked to teach there? I think Tom knew he'd made a mistake storing it there once Dumbledore became Headmaster. And I think the two that will die will be Draco and Mrs. Weasley.

i kinda have a sick desire, i can see it: harry has just killed off all the bad guys (the v-man, snape, perhaps draco, & u no the rest) with bright flashes new spells in a huge dramatic scene & then turns to leave, a confident smile on his face, a swagger in his step, all sweaty from the fight, and then just as he exits he bonks his head, stumbles around in the rubble, trips & dies. ta da! finale!! k that was it

My take: Since Snape and Dumbledore were arguing prior to Dumbledore's death, (Harry heard Snape say he didn't want to do it anymore) Snape killed Dumbledore to protect Harry; by his own order.
Next, Snape dies in his last double-cross, in attempt to protect Harry. Voldemort kills Harry. Neville Longbottom (who shares Harry's birthdate and whose parents are disabled because of Voldemort) kills Voldemort.
Is there anyone in Vegas taking odds on this?

Regardless as to which 2 main characters die, it will not be the happy ending that many seem to think will take place. Since JK Rowling will be done with the 7th & final book in the seriers, whatever she has chosen will surely leave fans deeply surprised & in shock. She also needs an ending that won't allow other writers the ability to pick up where she last left off. However, if she were to start writing about Harry Potter again; she could tell the story from the other characters view, hence still bringing Harry Potter back to life.

The problem with that is that the book was a horocrux and then only way to make Tom riddle die was to destroy the book. Harry was used to bring Voldemort back but like it said while one lives the other can't. Voldemort tried to kill Harry in the graveyard because he was already restored and he knows when one lives the other can't. He wants to live. And he can split his soul again. Harry is a biiger threat to him as a wizard then losing one of his Horocrux's. I think its cool that everyone is into this. Using our imaginations not because we want to be right, but because we all have so many different ideas.

I don't think Harry will die because that would mean evil would triumph over good. It would be a horrible way to end a perfectly good series. Not to mention that the book is written from Harry's point of view; it's not in 1st person or anything, but it is his POV. I know it shifts POV in the Sorceror's Stone when Quirrel is trying to make Harry fall off his broomstick, & Hermione sets fire to Snape's robes, and it's not from his POV in the beginning of Goblet of Fire when it's set in Little Hangleton. However, those were special circumstances; how would Deathly hallows be if it ended with a different POV than Harry's? I think Woirmtail will come into play, maybe even dying to save Harry since Harry saved his life; that debt has never been repaid. I'd love for Snape to die, but there's still the thought that he and Dumbledore arranged this in preparation. After all, the task that Draco set out to do was to kill Dumbledore, and Snape swore he'd do it if Draco failed. Perhaps the only way Snape could prove his true loyalty to Voldemort was by killing Dumbledore. However, Snape has always seemed bad so who knows? I do hope Bellatrix will die because she is a nasty character who killed Sirius. And in response to the person who said Harry would have to die so no one can continue with a Harry Potter 8. Hello, the books are copywrited; if someone tried to do so they'd end up in serious legal trouble. J. K. Rowling is richer than the queen.
