John Edwards, the former Senator and candidate for Vice President who is in the running for next year's presidential nomination, has hired two consumer activists from Wake-Up Wal-Mar, a union-back political group that opposes just about everything Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) does these days. This really is no surprise, as Edwards has hired fire-breathers before to support his campaign. Alas, the last one he hired was dismissed after a huge public outcry led by Fox News personality Bill O' Reilly.
Edwards is again stepping into the mud-wrestling ring by hiring activists Paul Blank and Chris Kofinis. What does Edwards hope to accomplish with this move? Well, although the hiring has not been completed yet, both Blank and Kofinis have campaign management and communications in their backgrounds, and both will be poised to increase the visibility of Edwards while allowing other senior campaign officials to work on bringing in more campaign funds. Edwards has fallen quite a bit behind Hilary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in campaign fund-raising, and since we know money talks (and platforms walk) when it comes to elections, the more money you have, the more ears and eyes you can reach.
But does Edwards want these high-level officials connected with Wal-Mart's biggest public adversary to work with his campaign? Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the nation for a reason: customers shop there and most seem to like it. Although the retailer is constantly attacked because of its size and practices, Edward's decision to use fanatic Wal-Mart adversaries could backfire among a good portion of the American public. Will he back down again?

John Edwards -- below you will find a copy of the email I sent to Seator Obama after he appeared at an anti-walmart rally --
senator obama--
before you join the "dump on walmart" bandwagon, think very carefully about the role that walmart plays in every community. let me make a few observations:
1. most walmart employees are high school graduates.
2. most walmart employees are not people who have learned a skilled trade
3. most non-management walmart jobs can be manned by someone who has been given very little training -- perhaps a day or two of computer based tutuoring.
4. it is inconceivable that a person who has this skill set will find a job anywhere in american business that will allow them to support a family
that being said --
1. most walmart employees have another source of income -- either other family members or the family assistance acency of their state and local government
2. part-time, or even full-time low-wage, low-skill jobs, help a family to exist while they are developing an alternate plan to educate themselves for a better position
My point --
Walmart is not responsible for their employees' lack of riches. That responsibility resides elsewhere --
1) our school systems
2) the modern american family structure
3) all of the adults who have shunned the ethic of hard work and determination for the life of instant gratification.
4) our churches
5) .......
I commend walmart for providing a way up for those on their staff who wish to advance.
My wife has worked in walmart management for 12 years. she has been paid very well and has had every opportunity to advance. She has great benefits and is successful as a producing member of our family.
Do not let the unions fool you -- they are part of the philosophical problem that has been exacerbated by the global economy. Don't let them hold up walmart as the culprit responsible for the changing times.
I am a life-long democrat that has watched the times change -- i am 67. you seem like a thoughtful person who is truly a compassionate individual. please help the country change so that we can all be happy in this new world. everyone needs to step back, sit down and think -- this is a difficult problem.

It seems more oplitical mud slinging at a retailer who provides a service people want. Why can't presidential canidates stick to the problems that matter in this country?

Jim - the working poor aren't a problem for the corporate media - but John Edwards advocating for them is. Hebce - we get more haircut stories. Youmay not get the connection - but many others do.
Wal-Mart CEOs make billions in salaries while their employees attempt to exist on very low wages - and with NO healthcare. These are employees with families - not high school kids.
Wake up people!

I worked in a supervisory position at Wal-Mart for 18 months. I am a widow with three children. I was recently terminated unjustly. I was quite outspoken about the unjust way that people were treated. I spoke out when our store management refused to pull the salmonella-tainted peanut butter from our shelves. I firmly believe that a union is the very answer for Wal-Mart employees. To guarantee fair wages for employees and to truly give the associates a voice, I encourage all Wal-Mart associates to unite in the form of a union and make a change for the betterment of all associates. I wish Mr. Edwards the best with all my heart and prayers.

I liked John Edwards at one time, but now I feel the way he approaches the issues is the same way a socialist would. I am afraid if he had his way in reforming health care our health care would be ruin. His idea of taking from the rich and giving to the poor, notice, I said giving, is wrong. I am certainly not among the rich in this country, but I do realize that this is the only country in the world poor people are fat. I admire people who have worked hard and have gain wealth from hard work. John Edwards is rich, and got that way I would bet by hard work taught to him by his mother and dad. If he wants $400 hair cuts he pays for himself I have no problem with it. He earned it. Now, if he is using campaign donation to do so, well, that is a different story. My point is going after sucessful American companies and people is the wrong approach for him if he expects any chance becoming President and serving all the people.

"I am certainly not among the rich in this country..." Yeah, right, Jerry.
You make a minimum of $100K per year selling Real Estate, and you've been selling Real Estate for 20+ years. You are most definitely among the rich in this country. Get real, Jerry.
