The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, to be voted on today by the Senate Health Committee, seems on the fast track to approval. If passed into law it will place the tobacco industry under the oversight of the Food and Drug Administration. The measure, supported by health groups and some of the industry, will give the agency some broad powers in regulating the contents and sales of tobacco products.
Industry heavyweight Altria Group's (NYSE: MO) Phillip Morris favors the bill, but others such as Reynolds American's (NYSE: RAI) R.J. Reynolds oppose it, claiming the regulations would limit its ability to compete with the market leader.
Among the agency's responsibilities will be vetting the ingredients of cigarettes, which will surely winnow out some of the reported 200 or more additives that have been used in American smokes. The bill also prohibits cigarettes from containing any artificial or natural flavor other than tobacco or menthol - sorry, you clove fans. The agency further has the right to ban advertising it deems injurious to the public health, which could mean a loss in print advertising and event sponsorships.
The bill is not without sops to the tobacco industry, however. In it, the FDA is not permitted to ban tobacco, require a zero nicotine level, set minimum age limits higher than 18, or call a halt to over-the-counter sales.
As anti-smoking legislation goes, this act is a half-measure, one that the industry is probably able to live with and far short of the draconian legislation it fears. One thing I can predict with confidence – the cost of cigarettes will be going up to pay for this new level of bureaucracy.

Give me a break. There is 1000 times worse pollution from oil refineries and coal than smokers could ever do in a million lifetimes. A man ought to be able to choose his own poison. In San Francisco you can't even smoke in the streets. Yeah you can smoke the bologna pony but not a Marlboro. What the hells wrong with people. If you want to ban smoking might as well ban cars to. Freedom used to mean something in this country. I wonder why Father died in Vietnam now though.

Everyone cries about how cigarettes kill them with second hand smoke, and how they should be outlawed. How many people die each year due to drunk drivers, I know my grandfather was killed by one. After the politicians have bleed the tobacco companies dry they will go after the alcohol companies and then after any product that they can bleed to death.

Oh I have freedom to tell you to bug off or butt out!! except your freedom of speech. Dont confuse freedom of speech with your freedom of action. If your smoking bothers me, I can tell you to scram, please. Courtesy do help... Of course... Basically, you do not have the friggin liberty to pollute the air. Cigarettes generates a lot of fly ash and they go into other people lungs. Yours got a nce filter and you thought you need nt worry too much but we are bothered by your inconsiderate action. Just quit pointing to coal powerplants and cars. We have enough to deal with. To add smokers on top of that? Hey EPA where are you when we need you?? Wake up EPA!! Develop catalytic converter helmets for smokers!!

FDA is wrong place it is more like EPA's turf. Smokers are air polluters simple as that... I dont care about smokers' health. I care about the clean air more than smokers. Smokers have tendencies to finish their butts near entrances of stores, offices, etc. Also , smokers should not smoke and drive as smoke are being vented out of smoker's cars and into following cars. Smokers pollute air indoors and outdoors. More smokers smoke outdoors since more indoor smoking are banned. Things are getting worse not better and politiicians are not solving things. Smokers got to be fitted with catalytic converters.

If you have urge to smoke while driving, please be sure to close all vents in your car . You can turn on AC and keep vents shut by turning knob to MAX AC. Your smoke will be recirclualted inside your car instead of leaving through your door vents because the inlet vents will be kept shut so your door vents has no other vent intake to push smoke out your door vents. You will be airlocked with your smoke inside your car. When you are finished with smoking , wait until you see no cars around then turn AC MAX to AC and you can let smoke out . Thank you for your polite cooperation.

I am not a smoker, but I did patronize establishments that still let there customers smoke, everyone seemed happier there than a place with a lot of restrictions. A smoking ban has come to our community, and you can't smoke anywhere inside anymore, But you can put on the stinkiest perfume or cologne and get on any elevator, walk in any building and make the people you are around have to smell it. Being that we have this ball rolling lets not let it stop here. Inside: no perfume, no cooking, no drinking or eating. Outside: no automobiles, factories, seweage disposal plants or guns. And when we're all living 2 years longer we'll have time to work on other bans.

That is rediculous to tell people to smoke with all their windows up and their vents off. Why don't you tell us to smoke 10 cigarettes in a row next brettze@hotmail.com I'm going to smoke with my window down because I don't want to inhale that much smoke and it is my right to have my window down to get smoke fresh air with my cigarette smoke. It is car exhaust, oil refineries and many corporations causing the biggest problems with air pollution, not smokers. Smokers cause a very small fraction of it. One positive thing that might come out of the FDA regulating cigarettes is less pointless additives. We don't need chemicals in cigarettes to make them burn quicker or to be more addictive. Believe me, nicotine is addictive enough. I know. If pointless additives are going to be added to cigarettes, they should at least be listed on then packs.
