McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) was sued in China for, among other things, printing most of its receipts in English. The suit was not brought by the Chinese government, but by a lawyer in the country. The charge is that Chinese consumers have a "right to know" what they have paid.
McDonald's claims that all of its local restaurants are staffed by local Chinese who speak only the country's language.
This story could be an isolated incident but could also be taken at the beginning of attempts by the Chinese to control the practices of US companies in that country. It is not clear, and may never be, whether the attorney who sued McDonald's did so at the request of the government. It would be one way to avoid a direct confrontation between China and a US multinational.
If other suits by "local" attorneys or legal authorities within the provinces begin to be more frequent, it could be a sign that the government, working indirectly, is planning to gain control over business practices of companies based outside China. Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) has already been forced to allow local unions into its store, along with a branch of the Chinese communist party.

Doda said-------40. They have a right to know what they paid??? DUH didn't the customers pay with Chinese money or do they all walk around with a pocket full of our dollars that we are so happy to send to them for all of their contaminated crap. Also I would think that the receipt would have an monitary amount on it that they did pay. This whole story is crap.

HEY STUPID DODA, THEIR SUING SO THEY WILL KNOW IF THEY ARE PAYING FOR WHAT THEY ACTUALLY ORDERED INSTEAD OF WHATEVER SOME DUMB WORKER LIKE YOU DECIDED TO WRITE DOWN IN ENGLISH.

Well, could be true. If it's anything like Florida, they hire locals and none of them speak functional English except the managers. It you can't understat the word "ketchup" at Mc D's, you shouldn't be working the pick up window.

I am not against the legal immigrants but I do feel they should learn our language, and not want us to change for them. I believe the companies in China should speak and write in Chinese. But they probably feel that since America bends over backwards to print everything in other languages, that every country does. If they want to speak their language then let them speak it in their home. There is added expense in printing the instructions in multiple languages so it would be cheaper to buy if only printed in English if purchased in America.
I feel jobs should be given to people with the qualification, not to someone from another country because the company gets so much money a year for hiring them. They use the excuse that Americans won't work the jobs that they hire the immigrants for, but that is not true. The ones that will not work them, do not want to work anywhere anyway. Those Americans are lazy and expect everyone to take care of them. I work for a company that hires a lot of Mexicans and a lot of them are very nice but when they want to only speak in Spanish, it makes you wonder if they are legal. Why are they here if they want it to be Mexico or other countries? America need to clamp down on the illegal immigrants in this country and it would free up a lot of jobs. True the immigrants may work for less than an American would work for but a job is a job and if you have to work two jobs to pay your house payment, utilities, but groceries then that is what you have to do.

I wonder if China and the rest of the world has the same laws for taking a drivers test (written) in California where they have the test printed in 15 different languages. It is time for all who live in the USA to learn to read and speak English. When did we quit making naturalized citizens pass their english tests to become Americans??

China is a fabulous country and so far, it is good for Americans. America is, of course, more fabulous. China has people who take advantage of a rich company like MacDonald's, just as we do (remeber the hot coffee burn?). Most often, our lives are better because of cheaper Chinese goods. Their second language is English, by the way, not Spanish. OUR second language is Spanish and our lax border patrol is because Bush has an Hispanic sister-in-law and part Hispanic nieces and nephews who he loves. Too bad the Hispanic sister-in-law Columba Bush is also a crook (who got caught).

Yeah, the receipts should be in Chinese. China sucks. I think China and Wal-mart are one in the same. Specially when I read things like... In 2006, Wal-mart was responsible for 11% of the U.S. trade deficit with China. I would quote where I read this, but I don't remember. LOL. Ya'll gotta stop spending money at Wal-mart. Pets and children are being harmed by your patronage to Wal-mart. Screw Mcdonalds. This is how the Chinese show their appreciation for the recent 12-56% pay increases bestowed upon Mcdonalds' Chinese workers. Way grateful, ya know?

If you really need a receipt to remind you what you just payed for at McDonalds of all places-write on the back in your own language McD's IS AMERICAN!!
And if you feel the need to sue us over that--then the USA better wake up and sue you for wrongful death and child endangerment for all the cheap, faulty, lead based toys you send to us!!!

Ok. Make the stuff in China in chinese as long as you say sorry for killing our pets. Instead of sueing McD tell them to make the shit in chinese.
As for the people posting about illegals from Mexico. We're talking about Chinese sueing McDonshit because its in english.
As much as I hate how they skin animals alive (Dammit they kill them more painfully then a hungry lion killing a zebra. Animals have feelings too) they do have every right to have their products from america in chinese.
As I said before. They poisened our pet food. Which is worse? China having their McDonalds stuff (an american resturant) in eglish or China poisening our pets with their icky shit.
Gosh China, just because you hate doggies doesnt mean you have to poisen other peoples.

I have never seen so many comments by racist, prejudiced people as I have seen today. I'm ashamed to say that I am American after reading these. Unless all of you are Native Americans, your families all came from somewhere else. What makes our country great is that we are that melting pot of other cultures. I have spent a lot of time in China and I have never gotten a McDonalds receipt in anything other than Chinese. I always remember that I am in their country and I don't speak their language, Luckily I have always met people who are open to foreigners and who try to help me in English. It's a pity that we don't do the same thing in the US ~ It's ironic that a country that does not have the greatest track record on human rights is more accepting of others than our so called "melting pot" Before you get on your soapbox and rant about things you know nothing about, get off the computer, out of your house and go see the world you're complaining about. Until then, don't criticize what you don't understand.

Some things to keep in mind:
1. This is not about China being upset with customers or staff at their McDonalds speaking English and not Chinese -- as those of you who try to compare this to the "English-only" and anti-Spanish hysteria nonsense seem to think. It seems to be more about business transactions and such, which should be in Chinese, the country's official language and the one spoken by employees and most customers. It sure seems logical that receipts be in the language that everyone understands. Would we like it if here, in the States, if the receipt for a Bic Mac and fries was in French?
2. McDonald's is not going to pull out of China or any such nonsense. What company for profit would give up access to a country with China's consumer population? Imagine how many Big Macs a year that is.
3. Considering the way things are going in this country and as we continue to fight wars we can't afford on borrowed money, it would be probably best for us to start learning Chinese, as China will soon own us. So don't worry about Spanish as it may be Chinese we will ll be conducting business in.

As far as I am concerned, America could take lessons from the above suits. The predominate language spoken in a country should be used. It certainly doesn't hurt to have a second printing of another language, but the predominate language should prevail. In America we try to please everyone and end up pleasing none. I am no lover of china since I have 4 cats out of 7 in renal failure due to a prescription food which had the bad wheat in it, but Chinese is predominate there and should be used. From the beginning I felt we should stay home, keep our productive power within our borders, but now that we are there, respect their customs, beliefs, and needs.
