Maybe it's time to look under your kids' beds.Fisher-Price, a division of toy-maker Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT), is recalling nearly one million plastic pre-school toys because of unsafe levels of lead paint. The toys were painted by a Chinese vendor with whom the company has a long association.
The recall, the second-largest this year involving toys, involves 83 different products made from April 19 through July 6. Toy characters parents (and their pre-school children) will certainly recognize include Elmo, Dora the Explorer, and her pal Diego.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has a full list of the recalled toys here.
This certainly doesn't bode well for China's manufacturing reputation. In recent months, headlines have been made with poison pet food, and toxic toothpaste, all coming out of Chinese factories. In June some one million Thomas the Tank Engine toys were recalled due to the lead paint issue. Bad enough to scare America's millions of pet owners (or those with a fine row of pearly-whites). But when you start selling dangerous merchandise to American parents, it's time to start cracking down on quality control or risk losing lots and lots of business.
According to an article in the New York Times, The Toy Industry Association has been working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on new regulations that require more stringent safety checks. It's also been suggested that the industry needs the help of the U.S. Government to get China on board and compliant with these regulations.

why can we not keep our business in the USA? the manufacturers say it is higher cost. How much more are they paying now for thier mistakes. How can we trust any of thier products for our children! Please bring the jobs back so that the people who make the toys are making them for thier own children and grand children!!

We know that children in America are having problems with learning. Achievement tests in schools prove that. There is more ADHD, mental disability, & autism than ever before. Could the use of "bad" toys be contributing to our children's behavioral & learning problems?

This whole problem started in the '80's folks! No more manufacturing in the States so we can fatten dividends for the CEO's and the like! I suppose the USA is becoming anti-middle class! Now we suffer with mediocre and maybe dangerous product from offshore manufacturing. And the ramifications list goes on and on and on...ugh-!

It's about time the manufacturers bring our products back to the USA where we have quaility control on our products. They are going to wait until someone dies (other than all those cute dogs) and then blame someone else. Lead based paint was pulled from shelves here years ago and now we have to worry about children getting lead poisoning from China.....I think not. It will be a long time before I support Fischer Price again.

I have to agree with everyone's recent comments. I believe if China had the same standards and requirements to pass and they also had a workers compensation and insurance etc. to pay (like we do) it wouldnt be so cheap to buy their products. Well folks we have bought their products for years and complained amongst ourselves but havent done anything to change the circumstance. Now they (fair trade) wants to bring them up to date on compliancies so that means we still havent learned!!! It is my dollars that I earned in this country and I want to have the choice when I go shopping (especially Walmart) if I buy American made or FOREIGN made.

I think America is just now blaming China because they want to find something wrong with the super power that is already taking over the world. Just look at Toronto, Canada for a good example. Its like a new China up there. We want to buy American made products and want to blame other countries when they mess up but its not like we have problems too. People we are paying what we are getting for- cheap labor and over worked workers- of course this is whats going to happen. And if you want the jobs to stay in America then imagine all the complaints that will happen becasuse people will feel that they are being over worked and not being payed enough.

This has been in making for a long time. FP was another US company eaten up by Mattel and all US jobs sent off-shore to break the unions and put Americans out of work. Make it cheap in a country that does not value human life, (after all they have more people than they know what to do with!!!!), what results do you expect???? Those people are being exploited and guess who is doing the exploiting?
Americans need to say NO MORE!!! Buy American or go without and maybe the whole world will wake up.
Congress is nothing but a rubber stamp for special interests. We don't have a governing body anymore. The Vice President says he is in a special category (it should be unemployed)! Congress just looks the other way and takes free lunches and why should it take years and billions to safeguard the citizens of the so called greatest nation.
Come one America wake up. Remember Kruschev's words; "We will bury you!". What do you suppose the Chinese are saying????? "We will poison you!!
CALL, WRITE, FAX AND E-MAIL YOUR LEGISLATORS.
TELL THEM TO KEEP THE IMPORTED CRAP OUT OF OUR MOUTHS AND STORES, NOW!

The politicians have sold our country out. They are supposed to be appointed to represent the interests of the people, but the only people they represent are the CEO's of rich corporations. Could it be that they are the one's that also are making the politicians wealthy or are the one's contributing huge amounts of money to their campaign's. Maybe instead of taking all of this money to run a "nasty, mudslinging" campaign like it has become, they could actually put the money to good use and help people in this country that need it. I believe that there is no middle class any more...just the upper and lower, and the upper seem to want to keep it that way. Are there any honest politicians any more???? Is there anyone out there that has the heart and nerve to stand up to big business??? More importantly, what is life going to be like for our children and grandchildren...I feel so sorry for them. We have left them with nothing to look forward to but to be enslaved by the 1% of the country that has been nothing but greedy and has bleeded this country dry.

I have a one year old son and am just horrified!! I know the dangers of lead paint and the adverse effect it could have on development. My heart was in my throat, as more and more toys my son owned appeared on the screen. It is a shame when you try to be the best parent you could by purchasing educational toys (like seseme street and dora) and you learn that they are harmful. It is also alarming that this is not the fist time this year that imported products from China were tainted. What happened to quality assuance?? I bet if that factory was in the United States, or even Canada, this mishap would have never occurred! I can't seem to get away from the "Made in China" label. I am beginning to cringe at how many times I see it on a daily basis. I want to buy products made in the USA, and would gladly pay a few more dollars to do so. BRING OUR FACTORIES AND JOBS BACK! I would rather pay for piece of mind and better quality assurance, than a funeral service for my innocent child. It is truly a sin what happened, and I can only hope, no children will be affected! I will think twice before buying toys manufactured outside the US!

If everyone in America would not buy anything made in China, it wouldn't take long for China to get the message that we only want GOOD and SAFE toys for our children not those toys that are filled with toxic that will kill or cause serious illness for our precious children. I say America it is time for everyone to BOYCOTT everything that is made in CHINA not only toys, but I say "EVERYTHING".......

When it comes to my kid, you have one shot and that is it. One strike and you're out. So, never again will I buy a Mattel product. Even if a miracle happened and they moved their manufacturing base to America, I would still not buy.
Don't screw with parents with small kids, sir.
People, if you can, buy only American-made toys or at most Western European/UK/Australian toys. The Chinese have no standards - the bastards. Don't forget, these are the same people who practiced the "one-child" policy.

I agree with most of the comments. A big boycott of Chinese goods would get the message across to American business and Chinese business that consumers are not satisfied with what they are getting from the sweatshops. Another word of advice, buy your kids games from europe or UK, Australia like JEvans mentioned. They are countries that have values closer to our own. China has no values at its core. They don't deserve our dollars. They are unstable without us, they are the truly pathetic ones.

Lead in toys, defective tires, seafood that can kill someone, pet food that kills our pets, etc, etc, etc - while the bozo in Washington and his fellow clowns continue to throw billions away in Iraq and use scare tactics regarding terrorists, the Chinese are going to destroy us with their products. Will the idiot do anything? Supposedly, a guy by the name of bin Laden killed thousands of Americans almost 6 years ago. Remember him? Bozo used Afghanistan as a stepping stone for troops heading to Irag for his Hussein fetisah war. Was Hussein a bad guy? Yes. Did he have anything to do with 09/11. NO! When he used chemical weapons, where did he get those chemicals? The Reagan administration, but nobody talks about that. In other words, expect the bozo administration to do as much about this problem as they did about bin Laden.

Seems to me that sometime ago we were China's enemy, but now we are lining their government's wallet. It makes you wonder if the lead in the toys, bad seafood and pet food were truly mistakes. War is not always fought in a gun battle, sometimes it is silent and very deadly.
