Yesterday Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants broke baseball's most hallowed record, the career home run mark held for the last 80+ years by only two people; Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron. When the dust cleared from the scramble for the ball, Matt Murphy, a 22-year-old from Queens, New York, was holding the prize. The value of Bonds' home run ball is estimated at $400,000 and up.The value to me: $0. He, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and the other steroid sluggers have given the grand old game a black eye that taints every player's accomplishments.
If someone is dumb enough to fork over big bucks for this tainted trophy, I'd like to offer them a selection of other treasures, such as --
- Ken Lay's Bible
- Floyd Landis' pee cup
- Rosie Ruiz's running shoes
- Uri Geller's spoon
- Frank Abagnale's pilot wings
- Milli Vanilli's musical charts
- Jayson Blair's chair from the NYT
On second thought, perhaps the ball should be given back to Mr. Steroid. Then he'd at least have one larger than a peanut.

I totally agree, but I would go so far as to rip on Major League Baseball for not stepping in and putting an end to this farce.

No matter what anyone has to say about Barry Bonds the one thing they can't take away from him is the fact that HE hit 756 home runs....have you ever tried to hit a baseball coming at you at 90 plus miles an hour. If not then try it in a batting cage and you'll have a whole lot of respect for Barry and baseball players in general. It's nothing short of an incredible achievement.

if they had steriods in babe ruth days he would of had 2000 home runs, they should make a run at those real players who are clean and give them a title for being true to the game.

2000 home runs...and I suppose if Ruth did not go on drinking binges he would have had 3000 home runs.

Amazing, Barry Bond's homerun will be worth much more, because he will be seen as a "loser" in the next few years.
"Here is the homerun ball by Mr. Bonds. He was on steroids. A cheating baseball player."
No one else was, and no one who is on, or has been on illegal drugs, will ever be.

Barry Bonds earn his title look I have been on steriods for over ten years and if anybody had any common sence would know the eye problems that come along with steriod use would know it was his talent of his sport I could not hit 756 home runs and I can see Barry has no eye problems this hole media storys are nothing but racist crap and no more congrads Barry in your baseball record!

How do you know that Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron were not using performance enhancing drugs? Can you prove it? Give Barry Bonds and the rest of Baseball a break, it's all relative and the game is evolving. There are many more important things going on in the world, stop worrying about small things!

Babe Ruth did it a lot better and no drugs. This ass should be kicked out and never let into the hall of fame. This ball should not be worth jack!

I think baseball fans will agree that BB's new record is a farce. He should be run out of baseball. A- Rod will break BB,s record cleanly. Then we will have something to cheer about. Diana Davis

Hank Aaron actually hit 757 home runs. His very first out of the park home run in Milwaukee for the Braves was not counted. Why? He got up to the plate with runners on at least two of the bases, maybe three. One of the pitches came and he connected hitting a home run. He was so excited that he got his engines revving and took off around the bases passing the runners loping around the bases and was called out for passing the runners on his own team. My parents were there in 1956 or 57 and saw the event. Mom really got a kick out of his youthful enthusiasm. I was away at college at the time.

Also Hank Aaron. No one on drugs will ever be in the hall of fame.
No question about that. We've seen it.
Good call, Cliff!

I believe that the record should be marked with an asterisk because all of the circumstantial evidence points to the use of performance enhancing drugs. Now if we think about the phrase "performance enhancing drugs" we have to ask how much did it enhance Mr. Bonds game? Did it add 20 homers? 40, 60, 100? Certainly people wouldn't take these drugs with the attendant physical risks, if they only made a minor difference! Barry Bonds would have been a great 550-600 HR player with many gold gloves. He would have been a sure hall of fame player with many celebrated achievements but now he is simply one more guy who cheated. Baseball also is to blame for not stopping McGuire, Sossa and the rest of the crowd. I know hitting a baseball is difficult, and it is all the more difficult to hit home runs without the aid of drugs; sort of the way that Hank Arron did! Sorry Barry, no pass from this fan - You are not the legitimate HR King!!!

Baseball needs to do what cycling is. Weed out the users. If the USA's pro sports had the drug testing that cycling does we wouldn't have roid users breaking records that they shouldn't. Hank Aaron is still the best!!

You know I'm so sick and tired of the black man accomplishments being watered down by some penniless dead head. I could name plenty of white sports players, that was an alcoholic, drug addict etc, don't make me go there, and some of them made it to the hall of fame. It was clear to see what they were!! You black people, stop kicking your brother, lift him up, and you white folks stop being jealous of all our smarts we have!! Yes I said it we are very smart people and you can't take it!!

Wow, what a hater. He used a cream and clear for maybe 2 years and all the sudden he is a talentless pos. I guess he owes everything to steroids right. Horrible article. Absolutley no insight, and your just stating what the national media wants you to. He's 43 years old and playing at a higher level than most other players in the sport and he's still getting ragged on. Do you still think he's shooting up before games? because he still kills the ball and is on pace for 35 home runs again.

What ever happened to Expos Factos. In theory it should apply here. Most people that chastise Barry Bonds should look at the baseball rule book. There was no rule in place until recently for Steroid use. Barry Bonds is being ridiculed for a rule that did not exist until after the fact. He never tested positive for any drug use. I might not like Barry Bonds. My problem is not with Barry but with Major league Baseball. They should have addressed this problem a long time ago.
