Killer bibs! Is recall madness just anti-Chinese sentiment?
I think it's probably the latter. And that's not to say I have any doubt over whether China is turning out mountains of subpar crap for us. Standards are different over there, after all. And at the end of the day, everyone gets what they pay for, right, Mattel (NYSE: MAT)?
I'm just starting to find it suspect that every day brings new screaming headlines about more poisonous, sub-par products being sent to us from China. Toxic toothpaste! Poisoned pet food! Lead-coated toys! Now it's killer bibs! It's like the Red Scare all over again.
But now that our nation's policy makers and business leaders have farmed virtually all of our manufacturing overseas in the name of the all-mighty bottom line, I suppose they should have expected a little backlash like this. Give the people some credit for wondering what happened here. And then stand back while they revolt with their pocketbooks.
Indeed, whip consumers into enough of a frenzy and pretty soon you'll have to import pesky, expensive, American-Style quality standards. Can labor unions then be far behind?

Yes, there's a lot of residual racism throughout today's market. Yes, around WWII we used to refer to Japanese toys as so much crapola guaranteed not to disintegrate until wound. Then, around 1966 the Japanese came up with a quality control board; you could then look at a Japanese telescope, binoculars or a camera and gradually realize it was one of the finest made in the world. Even a Japanese candy bar was superb. Suddenly Japan was pure quality. China can turn around and they have the discipline to do it.

dont blame china. they have already started cleaning up their act. the person of power, who was in charge of food qualityand product safety, has been tried for accepting bribes, and allowing tainted products into the market, and for murder, some tweenty-odd counts. he was excecuted earlier this month. found guilty, swift justice.
so, things will get better, as the new minister of safety, settles into office.

Wow Julie - what a tirade!
It's hard to tell if your complaint is that these events are now being reported or if your problem is that you can't believe they are happening to begin with.
So you think all this is just anti-Chinese propaganda?
So it's OK with you that a US company orders a specific product but gets delivery of something that contains a hidden poison?
It's becoming apparent that it takes a jingoistic "Red Scare" to motivate the stupid American consumer to examine his purchases for more than the lowest Wal-Mart price.
Will the Chinese fix the problem? - yea boy - whenever they're caught at it.
But it's a free market right?
Just close you eyes to the near slave-labor conditions the workers endure.
Maybe your children will live (assuming your baby food isn't poisoned) to enjoy such a workers paradise themselves.

Do you really think that American companies (like Mattel and the distributors of the bibs and pet food to name a few ) are going through the huge expense of a recall, not to mention the loss of goodwill with consumers just to give China a bad name?
What makes your statement even more ridiculous is that these same American companies can lose future business or have to pay much higher prices of products manufactured outside of China.

China,Wallmart,&Exxon, are simular inthat they could careless about the saftey or hardship caused the American public. They are only concerned about making more profit, I think it is time to start boycotting all three.

I have been watching all the documentaries on China's awakening. I am so amazed and hope they achieve their goals. I am at the same time dismayed by the poisioning involved in so much food. I am still looking for the promised Pet Food promise to cover my $1200. vet bill. Looks like they are waiting to see what will become of the "Class Action" against them. I hope they haven't been feed thier people all these years these poison fillers.

its communist red china. communist russia was bad. profit for US companies make communist china good? china doesn't care about the individual rights in their own country.
US companies fire American workers to gain more profit by moving from US manufacturing (ie Mattel) to basically a toy broker. Got profit minus the US worker.
American consumers want the lowest prices..period.
and what could go wrong? something tells me we better get used to rat poison in our toothpaste and a little lead in your kids bib. you want low prices - you got em!
