Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is not resting on the recent bad news that millions of defective toys from Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT) and Fisher Price were sold in its stores. As such, the world's largest retailer has now said that it will re-examine safety reviews from designers and manufacturers of the toys, as well as increase the independent testing it performs on the toys. This is a good move for Wal-Mart, and if any retailer does not follow suit and create some kind of program to put toys it carries through rigorous testing as well, then it probably does not deserve your business. It's true that toy makers should have already eliminated problems with toys that led to recalls, but retailers are the last bastion before those products reach consumers. Think about it this way: are you a Wal-Mart customer or Mattel customer? My guess is that you answered Wal-Mart, and that fact makes the retailer in need of a review process for toy items it stocks on its shelves.
According to Wal-Mart, it will be requiring toy manufacturers to re-submit testing and safety documentation for toys already on store shelves to try and prevent any possible recalls that could stem from toys already in distribution. In other words, there could be toys in need of a recall sitting on shelves right this second. Wal-Mart will be double-checking the results of submitted safety documentation and will also be upping the number of toys tested at independent labs by an average of an additional 200 toys every single day. Said Laura Philips, Wal-Mart's toy merchandise manager, "Reassurance is really our key point." There you have it.

Walmart doesnt give a hoot whether or not the toys are safe. All they care about is the $$$$. It's time we take back our companies and build everything in this country. The hell with the Chinks.

Having been a Quality Engineer for about 45 years, I can tell you that inspecting toys and or any other products is not the way to insure their quality or safety. Both quality and safety must be designed into any product and processes developed to manufacture the product. Process controls must be developed to insure that those processes are effective and followed. Statistically speaking, 100 per cent inspection and testing is approximately 85% to 90% effective in removing defectives from lots of products. I am in agreement with the person who ask "What happened to the old motto that built Wal-mart? We sell only American made products unless it is not available from US manufacturers. Asking retailers to inspect and test the products is ludicrous.Should grocers test all their items for sale? What about the other 70,000 or 80,000 products that Wal-mart sells ? Should they test all of them also? No, I do not think so. Their products for sale should be pruchased from reputable, capable manufacturers with honest and capable quality systems. There is absolutely no excuse for these defective products continuing to be imported from China or any where else.

If ANYONE really thinks that Wal Mart is doing such things as increasing the testing on toys for the sake of the comsumer, who
ever believes that is a fool. The ONLY reason Wal Mart is doing ANYTHINGat all if indeed they are, is only because of the attention this has brough, they don't want to lose any business, any MONEY!!! If you don't believe this is the ONLY reason then why hasn't Wal Mart done ANYTHING AT ALL about the THOUSANDS of different products the buy from China and elsewhere they don't test and they know they don't meat US standards??? WalMart wont comment on that!!! Wal MArt is NOTHING but after your dollar ANY WAY they can get it. If you don't beleive that either, I truly pitty you.

This entire situation has been caused by Wal-Mart
continuously squeezing manufacturers and suppliers to cut prices to levels that are below subsistence for anyone who wants to do business with them. They
knuckle under but then make up the difference by cutting corners, including working conditions, quality control, cheaper materials, etc. The end result is that
Wal-Mart executives and stckholders make billions
while clueless consumers become victims. What Wal-Mart is going to spend on "stepping up toy inspection efforts" is pennies compared to the profit
it makes by squeezing suppliers and forcing them to cut corners --- and the media is falling for this.
