When I think back to high school, and all the odors that bothered me, perfumes and cologne are pretty low on the list. The kid who had trouble paying attention in English class after lunch, and had that thick herbal smell? That was annoying. The disheveled Latin teacher whose breath was so bad I had to turn away when he talked? Or how about the kid who only smelled decent the day of his monthly shower?
No, according to The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), some people insist that the real culprit is perfume. I'm serious. As designers roll-out new scents with colorful packaging to attract the back-to-school crowd, some schools are fighting back. They charge that excessive-cologne/perfume is an "air-quality issue." One principal interviewed feels, "Kids don't shower the way they used to." He complains that students are spraying Axe, a potent bodyspray, in lieu of showering after gym. But isn't that better than the alternative of spraying nothing?
The article also points out that a lot of teens are shelling out $50 for a bottle of designer stuff, in an effort to gain some affectation of a brand they can't really afford -- Marc Jacobs perfume instead of a Marc Jacobs bag. That's just silly. I have several bottles of knock-off designer cologne that I got at the Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR) -- 66% off, for 33 cents per bottle. I get compliments on it constantly.

Mike...exactly. School is not about banning personal preferences or indoctrinating the masses. As I've said earlier..if your allergies are so bad that you can't be around the public then don't go around the public. That includes teaching. And public education is so consumed with "self-esteem" there is no longer any time for learning. All this self-esteem gibberish has given rise to the "me me me" factor. "MY air" "MY this" "MY that" That's why people get off telling others what they can and can't do. I guess it must be some kind of envy goin' on.

I think you reiterate my point how there is no way to control all the different variables to cater to everyone's needs/wants. At some point, those with "allergies" or an intolerance need to make the sacrifices rather than forcing everyone else to cater to them. The list can go on and on about how people can be offended. NOWHERE in the Constitution does it say you have the right to NOT be offended our "put out". Someone else said that if your throat swells up to the point of death because of someone on the bus, you need to rethink public transportation rather than an entity that benefits the greater good have to cater to your whims.

I am allergic to whiners, who think the whole world should change just for them, this is The USA, where our soldiers die to give us freedom. I think we should give whiners a free ticket if to leave this country, one way, and ban them from ever returning. Any takers. This is the USA, love or leave it!!! lets ban whiners

I don't smoke and I really like clean air. There has been laws to ban smoking..why not perfumes and such in public places. I try to live a healthy way of life. I find many scents that are used in many forms are chemically produced and have nothing to do with natural scents. Chemicals are not healthy for anyone. Everytime I see an older woman with wrinkles I think..look what all those years of wearing makeup did. I also think that some underarm deordorates have created various gland cancer. It is not only about smell but the chemical that is in the air.

WOW! This thread is STILL going? There hasn't been a single comment that hasn't been repeated at least 10 times..I think it's pretty much done. LOL..We've got people spelling "cologne" as "colon" and then we have 50 people correcting the same individual..the "smelly colon" jokes got old after the first two comments...the remaining 100 were lame. No, I don't read EVERY single comment posted, but I read a majority and skim over every one, going back to something that looks interesting for more detail. It's an argument that'll never end. Again, there's nothing on earth that everybody can be around w/out having some reaction or allergy to it or it's chemical makeup,etc..We have the people who are labeled "whiners" b/c they want perfumes/colognes banned, and then we have the ones who are labeled "cruel" because they believe they shouldn't have something taken away from them for reasons that do not pertain to them, and they like to smell nice. Here it is again, for the 498th time in this conversation..JUST DON'T SMOTHER YOURSELF IN IT, AGAIN, IT DOESN'T ACT LIKE "OUST AIR FRESHENER"..YOUR STENCH IS STILL THERE..OH, AND JUST BECAUSE WE MAY WEAR SCENTS, DOES NOT MEAN WE DIDN'T SHOWER OR ARE DIRTY..COME ON PEOPLE..GEEZ..There will never be satisfaction with this..someone's hair may smell very nice from hair products, but the poor kid could be sent home from school for breaking the "no perfume/cologne rule"..I agree with the ones who say to tell the students what "excess amounts" equal to, ENCOURAGE the PARENTS to help teach their kids SOMETHING, and if the kids break the rules a second time, give them after school detention or something..

I had an 11th grade social studies teacher, Dr. J. Cole, who passed me purely on the basis of my lovely perfume ; )
And then, although I had only attended his class about 5 times all year, I surprised him by getting a 93% on the regents exams! Ahhh... the look on his face was just priceless! - LOL

I HAVE ALERGIES AND FOR ME PERFUMES ARE JUST AS BAD AS SMOKERS ODORS, MOLD AND MILDEW.
IT IS IN YOUR CLOTHES FROM BEING AROUND THEM AS WELL AS THEIR CLOTHES, PAPERS AND EVEN CARRIES OVER FROM THEIR HOMES.
BEST BET IS TO GO WITH UNIFORMS AND NO PERFUMES, JUST CLEANLINESS. WHICH WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE OF HOME ENVIROMENTS.
I KNOW SOMEONE THAT HAS SCENT THAT TURNS MY STOMACK. I AM SURE IT COSTS A LOT OF MONEY AND IT MUST SMELL GOOD TO SOMEONE BUT NOT ME. I HAVE KNOW PEOPLE WHO BUT SCENTS AND IT SMELLS GOOD ON THEM BUT NOT ON ME. SO IT GOES BACK TO OUR DNA.
THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY PEOPLE AND WE JUST DON'T MESH.

No,like the commercial, the only thing worse than your house smelling like fish,is your house smelling like fish and flowers.
There's nothing better than a nice clean smell. If these kids aren't showering it sounds like a health class lesson in hygiene is in order.
A little dab of perfume is okay, but people who wear perfume rarely use a little dab. They've already burned their own nostrils on it so they can't smell it.
And yes,I am biased, perfumes make my throat close up.I sneeze and start coughing. I spend half my time when I go out in public holding my breath until I get past the smokers and the designer imposters bathers.
As far as the Macy's comment, most of us who have allergies avoid the perfume aisle,so when it sneaks up on us,it's a bit of a shock.

I have chronic fatigue syndrome and am sensitive to strong smells. It is very seldom perfume that bothers me and then only if they pour the whole bottle on them. What sets me off is when they change the room deodorizer in public places and restrooms and when they spray for bugs. Those are the things that bother me the most. I enjoy perfume that is used in a normal way. As long as they don't try to smell up the whole room I don't have a problem.

I can only imagine how wonderful your 33 cent fragrance from the Dollar Tree smells. You must be a real class act.
It is no longer a question of "if" fragrances are harmful to human beings, this is a proven fact. What they are is a mixture of many chemicals which pollute the air and make it difficult for many many people to breathe, think, and function.
Personally, I would much rather smell a human odor than your horrendous 33 cent fragrance. While you're at it, put on a nice liberal amount of your 33 cent fragrance, spray some Fabreeze in your car, on your sheets, anywhere that smells like air... then get some plug in air fresheners and put them in the electrical outlets in your home, toss around some potpourri, burn some scented candles, use the most god-awful cheapest dollar store laundry detergent and add some of the cheapest smelliest fabric softener you can find.
That should do it for you, since your such a fan of spraying stuff in lieu of being clean. With all those chemicals in your lungs and your bloodstream one day soon you'll probably dissolve and just float away into outer space.
You get compliments on your 33 cent perfume.... from who? People who buy the cheap stuff? The 10 cent bottles of perfume?
Fragrances offend me. They give me hives, they make my mouth burn. My UPS driver must be the most rude person in the world. He smells like he lives in a bottle of your 33 cent perfume and then he gets it all over my packages at which point, I don't even want to go near them. I tell him to take them back.
By the way, there is no cigarette, I guarantee you, that ever smelled as bad as your 33 cent perfume, or your 4 dollar air freshener, or your $200 perfume.
It's time for people to stop offending others by poisoning the air they live in with chemical fragrances. Not only is it unnecessary but we are seeing more and more and we will continue to see more and more serious health issues in this regard.
Take a shower and leave the rest of the world alone.

"I have no embarrassing odors- although some of you who don't wear colons or perfumes do and really, really should."
You wear colons and refer to those of us with fragrance sensitivities as 'losers'? Get out of the gene pool!
Also, I've heard of the Venus Flytrap (yes, I garden!), but what are 'gripping pansies'? Are they dangerous?

Fragrances to me is like sinking in my car in a lake. I know I have just minutes with my throat closing and my mental capacities fogging and the onset of coughing before ultimately drowning. Since getting a chemical damage at my job, all chemicals (synthetic fragrance from petroleum byproducts) are difficult to process. This has kept me from church, movies, dinners... and my job. I now run quickly into banks and shops for food. I often must even totally change to rid my body of the volitile properties of fragrance. Its a severe health issue. We wonder about cancer, yet we are on out 80,000th added chemical to our environment since WW2. Fragrance is an unregulated industry. No wonder companies are jumping on the bandwagon... air fresheners, dryer sheets, faric softeners....if you cant smell it its not clean mentality. CLEAN shouldnt smell of anything. Fragrance is toxic, and those of us with damaged immune systems are just realizing it sooner.

It's very hard to stay out of the "heat" when "heat" is school or work! Kids are required to go to school. What do you do with the kids who are asthmatic and reacting to the 100s of perfumes worn by the 100s of different students? Why allow kids to pollute the air they are required to breathe nine months or more out of the year? Education is hard enough why make it more difficult. And what about those who work - are we just supposed to sit at home on unemployment or disability, unable to work because we can't breathe? Society pays for those benefits. I was just as intolerant and cynical and when people told me of their allergies or health sensitivities I was like "get over it" - until it happened to me. Having to totally reinvent your life because you cannot tolerate the smell of toxic chemicals has been an incredible nightmare. I'd like to think I wouldn't wish my experience on anyone, but I do. I wish EVERYONE would become sensitive to everyday chemicals so society would finally wise up and get rid of them.

Dan,
You're an idiot. Inhalers have freon in them - yeah, that would help someone who is already reacting to chemicals. "Taking responsibility for myself" means isolating myself in my own house, unable to do my own shopping, unable to go to a doctor's office because of the perfumes worn by so many people...get the idea. Yeah, I'm "taking responsibility" for myself. It would be a lot nicer if ignorant morons such as yourself would be less inconsiderate and realize there are other people in the world besides themselves. Poisoning the environment with your toxic chemicals is only going to compound the problem - it's not going to go away - only get worse. I look forward to knowing someday it's all going to catch up with you and you'll be the one to suffer.
