Alberto Gonzales, probably the most incompetent and unpopular attorney general in history, resigned today effective September 17. This move is long, long overdue.
The Bush Administration is so out of touch with the American Public that it's frigtening. The anonymous official who leaked the resignation to the New York Times said, "The unfair treatment that he's been on the receiving end of has been a distraction for the department."
Oh brother.
People who are worried about negative publicity shouldn't do negative things.
Warrentless wiretaps, the firing of the U.S. attorneys, and countless issues both large and small eroded what little support Gonzales enjoyed on Capitol Hill. Even some Republicans, including Sen. Arlen Specter, have called for him to quit.
Gonzales also reportedly was hated by the Department of Justice bureaucrats almost as much as Democrats on Capitol Hill. If Bush is smart -- a big if I know -- he will appoint a moderate Republican of sterling reputation to serve as the nation's top law enforcer during the waning days of his administration. Whether that means the Administration will take a tougher line on corporate crime, anttrust cases and other issues of interest to investors remains to be seen.
But with both Karl Rove and Gonzales gone, the Bush Administration is officially a lame duck. Investors shouldn't expect much of anything to happen between now and the 2008 presidential election. Reducing the capital gains tax or the inheritance tax -- which isn't a death tax -- is going to remain just talk. There is no incentive for anybody to do anything.

Most hated while still in office, I can buy that. Ramsey Clark has worked pretty hard at being the most hated former AG.

Gonzales should have been gone months ago (as should many, many office holders in this country). Sometimes what is best for a government "of the people" will be "biased." Our country can only grow as its citizens learn to embrace diversity in opinion and demand that government officials be accountable and honest regarding their actions. Gonzales this is not. Bush this is not. "Truth" is a complex matrix and defiance and irresponsiblilty hinder its revelation. As responsible citizens, we must oppose the self-righteous individuals who undermine our government and exploit their power, in turn oppressing innocent citizens. Gonzales should be banned from any opportunity to hold office in this country for the rest of his life. He is despicable as are many of the current administration.
