Chrysler (NYSE: DAI) joined Ford (NYSE: F) and General Motors (NYSE: GM) today when it proposed to divest its non-core assets. It is looking at divesting Chrysler Transport, which manages deliveries of supplies to Chrysler plants, and its Mopar unit, which makes high-performance and specialty auto parts, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal (subscription required).Obviously, the United Auto Workers oppose the divestitures. It is unclear if the divestiture of the assets will be part of the final agreement between the UAW and the newly independent Chrysler.
In addition to the potential non-core asset sales, the company already has a restructuring plan that calls for 13,000 jobs cuts and a return to profitability next year.
The UAW's talks with Chrysler have also revolved around the auto maker receiving a concession on health care costs, similar to what Ford and GM received back in 2005. Chrysler also wants to outsource non-core employees to a third party, similar to the agreements Ford currently has with UAW locals at individual plants.
The UAW now faces a battle at each of the three major Detroit automakers. The contract between the UAW and Chrysler expires on September 14.

There was a time in U S history when Big Business was the abuser...At that time Unions were a necessary and heroic force for the little guy (individual worker), Today the pendeulum has swung so far to the other side, that the Union forces have almost single handedly, killed off the entire structure of manufacturing in this country.
Being a Union worker, in a country with no factoriues, and no industry, is a paper tiger.
Way to go guys...Let the Chinese or Korean's, etc. manufacture our planes, trucks, tanks, missles, radios, t v 's, computers, and everything else tangible. then they can take our beautiful country and tell us to get out

I have spent time in several assembly plants for automobile companies. I was always amazed at the amount of time the union workers had to read newspapers at their workstations eat snacks even though it was not break time and then take the regular breaks away from their work stations. They were getting paid about three times the amount of other manufacturing workers even when laid off due to low sales. How could they have expected to compete in a world market when highschool dropouts are paid $30 to $40 per hour to work in the auto industry with huge fringe benefits.

Lets remember this country would not be what it is today if not for unions. The one world economy and our government is the reason our manufacturing has gone down the drain.thank you very much.

I am an UAW skilled trades member. My shop has required heavy overtime for the last few years. Because of this I have made some good money. Much of my overtime was mandatory. Our local has just agreed to a new contract that strips us of all of our remaining rights that the brave souls who came before us fought so hard for. I am also in the market for a new vehicle. Because my company has taken about 10000 dollars per year out of my pay and into thier tax break fund I must now settle for a lower quality car. No longer can I afford to drive an allegedly high quality american vehicle, and for the first time ever I do not feel it is my duty to do so. Remember this big three: I am an employee and a customer. You have eliminated me from your customer base through wage concessions. I will be in your shop, obeying your new contract language. I will also be talking to my *lazy* union brothers explaining to them why hondas rock and you do not

UAW = Unemployed American Workers Eliminate the unions, they are destroying this country's workforce. We have become a workforce of lazy, whining, injury-prone babies. Sware your allegience and restore the work ethic of a country to be one that supports american industry not destroys it. Toyota uses non-union workforces that in most cases makes more than union workforces do without the burden of lay-offs and union negotiations.
Toyota is now the number one automaker in the world! Catch on lazy, nonproductive, quality lacking american workforce our days are numbered. Get off your asses and get to work; stop the whining! Remember most people with the skill levels a typical union worker has make minimum wage.

It amazing how missinformed the union haters are in this country, in this day and age the auto worker is almost always a highschool graduate and in many cases a college graduate, yes back in the 1960's when many of the current retirees were being hired a high school diploma was not a major concern to the company, this was a different era and the average wage today for busting your but every day is about 25 to 27 an hr, come on over and try out my job we'll see how much time you have to read paper!

I'm a retired Ford Skilled trades supervisor and I never cease to be amazed by the "give me,
' attitude of UAW members--- the comapnies and unions worked in concert to foul their own foot path-- "sh*t in their own nest,"-- the union threatened strike and the companies in their hysterical desire to keep the lines running gaveinto evry union demand-- quality went down and wages went up-- then along came the Japanese!--- Union members take a look at the United Staes merchant shipping industry-- opps- sorry you can't look at it as it's almost extinct due to unions

HELLO PHIL DAVIS!! FOR YOUR INFO, A GREAT MAJORITY OF UAW WORKERS HAVE DEGREES. ARE YOU A HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT...MAYBE STUCK IN A LOW WAGE JOB?? THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM!! EVERYONE HAS HAD THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO GET INTO THE BIG THREE, BUT THEY HAD SOMETHING BETTER TO DO THAT DAY!! SO WHAT IF OUR JOBS ARE HIGH PAYING. YOU SHOULD KNOW FIRST HAND, THAT ALL THAT COMES AT A PRICE. WETHER IT'S TIME NOT SPENT W/ FAMILY, OR A LIMB. OUR GOVERNMENT IS FILTHY RICH FROM HARD WORKING AMERICAN TAXES, WHICH BY THE WAY, IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, YOU HAVE AN OPTION WETHER OR NOT TO PAY!!! THAT'S REAL, AND LEGAL!!!
