Remember how glad you were when the 'Do Not Call' list was introduced, knowing you could enjoy dinner in peace without having someone ask you whether you were satisfied with your long distance provider? Well, it turns out that feeling of calm may soon be coming to an end.
In Pennsylvania, the law expires on September 15, according to Newsweek, which says the five-year limit was put in place to purge the list of people who move or change numbers. [Update: the Federal 'Do Not Call' list reaches its five-year point next summer, meaning those who signed up early will begin to be dropped from the list in mid-2008.] Most people who signed up for the list, including myself, probably have no idea that there is a time limit, and that creates a big opportunity for telemarketers.
Tim Searcy, CEO of the American Teleservices Association, told Newsweek, "Will we attempt to touch people no longer on the list? Of course." This is truly frightening. I do not want telemarketers 'touching' me during dinner -- or any time, really.
Though hanging up on a telemarketer feels good, it's more effective to put your name the 'Do Not Call' list, which you can access here. Some states also operate their own lists.
If you act now, you can avoid the annoyance later.

I don't see how the list could adversely affect the economy. I never buy anything from them anyhow.

One thing you could do when they call is to ( upon being inquired for ) say " just a second" and set the phone down. don't pick it back up for about 5 minutes.I found over time it seems to work. It also spares a few of us from being called because it takes up their time.AND you can eat ( or whatever ) in peace.

telemarketing i think is ok but it is a hairy topic.who telemarkets us? window and door replacers furnace and chimney cleaners carpet cleaners lawn people insurance people ummm thats almost about it so whats the big deal LETS ASK OUR SELVES?? do you own a house or rent yes? if ya own who cleans the chimney you ha ha ha who cleans the carpet you and that goes for renters or owners so you see the picture we sometimes may need these services and alot of times you get your competive bid like they say get 3 bids before ya hire. so telemarketing is not so bad ya just answer listen to the name of the company ta see if ya need em or want a free no obligation bid or estimate and ya kindly say oh im not interested thanks and thats it.

T-Traverso, I could not have said it better myself! I second that motion. Lets make a "Call me List". Then if you want the calls you get them. I sure don't, but that's just my opinion.

I have a simple solution for unwanted calls even though I am on the do not call list: a) when I do not want to be bothered by the telephone it is simple to disconnect the phone or leave the receiver off the hook until such time as I want to answer any calls.
b)If I receive an unwanted call I simply hangup or say 'not interested, thank you' and hangup.
c)Problem is largely solved.
PS:For marketing purposes the phone should be used for a) making appointments. b)free offers that come in the mail which the recipient can checkout on their own (and which I feel are the most successful in terms of getting responses from those justifiably uneasy with giving personal information.) c) Introductory 'bill me later' offers.
Since verification of callers and their companies in real-time is difficult to nearly impossible unless I am by my computer I am probably one of the last persons who would disclose my date of birth and social security number 'on the fly' to obtain financing-for all you mortgage companies calling our homes I need to verify and trace your phone number (as shown on my caller I.D.) as well as company address and licensing before such disclosure and expect that your callers would have this information immediately prior to my giving my social security number out for you to pull my credit for rate quotes.

OUR CELL PHONE NUMBERS AVAILABLE for a FEE
at Intelius.com
Intelius 'OPT OUT' Requirements may not be a viable OPTion
According to their site, one can opt out of being listed in the cell phone directory.
[quote] As a courtesy we can temporarily 'opt out' your information from the Intelius People Search.
Fax or mail your name and address as it appears on our website. Or print the page from our website that includes your information. [end quote]
Please note the 'temporarily' notation.
Even worse, one would have to PAY Intelius to search and confirm their own cell phone number is listed (at the given time of the search).
Then by mailing or faxing the request to opt out, one is also giving them FREE verification the information is correct or correcting it for any future time they may decide to include it.
Even if one elects to send their name and cell phone number to Intelius without paying for a search, there again is free confirmed information for their records...and if it doesn't precisely match data in their records? Is it added, amended or discarded?
...and just what can we do to preserve what little privacy right(s) we have left?

No call list - WE NEED IT - what do we hate the most - stupid idiot telemarketers - when do they ever call at the right time - THERE IS NO RIGHT TIME - I have had them call at midnight - there should be a way to put a permanent end to the useless and unwanted calls - and what really gets my dander up is when they call me on my cell phone --- now how do they get those numbers!!!!!!!!
