You may have noticed that Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) has been struggling a bit of late. But not to worry, the company has a strategy to get things back on track. It is going to focus on low prices.
According to the Associated Press, Wal-Mart launched a new ad campaign on Wednesday, emphasizing how consumers can save money by shopping at the stores. This comes in the wake of the company's failed foray into fashion. The tag line for the campaign will be "Save Money. Live Better." I shudder to think how much an advertising firm was paid to come up with that one. If her private life is any indication, you have to think Julie Roehm could have come up with something edgier.
Stephen Quinn, Wal-Mart's chief marketing officer, said this in a statement: "The new advertising tells the same story we have told since day one, how we are working hard to save people money so they can live better."
But don't people already get that Wal-Mart can be a good way to save money? I mean, I would hope that people aren't shopping at the stores for the ambiance and customer service! The reason that Wal-Mart tried the whole Metro 7 line was that the "Always low prices. Always." story was no longer driving strong growth in the United States. The Metro 7 venture has failed, but that doesn't mean a new focus on Wal-Mart's one redeeming factor (even if it is a big one) will revive growth.

Today was the opening day of our Walmart Superstore, but I don't intend to use it. I don't like Walmart because you can't find anything made in the USA there. I only buy American made products, except at St. Vincent DePaul or Goodwill. I figure that if I have to have something made in China, it will be second hand and China is not profiting from it. Even Walmarts $4 prescriptions are from China. Shame on you Walmart, where is your patriotism? It's the money, stupid.

I don't know about where you live but here in Florida if you don't speak Spanish you are totally out of luck at Walmart. If you ask for help the employee looks at you with a blank stare and say's "Isle 9." Everything in the store is in "Isle 9" because none of their employees speak English and that is the only phrase they know.

One thing that Walmart lacks is a good selection of womens coats. My wife went to Penneys and we spent well over $100 and got a nice good looking one for her. We tried sence last year to get something nice at Walmart but nothing they offer is nice enough for her to wear at work. Also If a women needs maturnity clothes she is out of luck but she can get baby things. What are the people thinking, sell what we need and the stores will do better. Take suggestions, the customer is always right. I wonder if the exc. reads any of these?

Walmart has had problems for years, but people are too oblivious to it. They are the "sheep" following the "shepherd". People need to wake up everywhere to all of the problems of Walmart and in doing so, Walmart will fall back in line where Sam Walton intended Walmart to be, not the way the corporate conglomerate puts it. Sam Walton wanted to serve the people, give the quality products for less money. Right now, many people including me see Walmart as, at least, one leg of the "Beast", expecting to see a smiley face tattooed to our palm (or forehead) any day. Walmart has their hands in way too many projects and is global. Their prices are usually pretty good, but they are not "always" low. Walmart treats their employees badly--well, that depends on the definition of employee because it seems most of them are NOT "permanent" employees and the turnover is great. I find it interesting how many actual "real" employees they have. Only those get those supposed great benefits. So the typical "employee" is treated badly and have no benefits to speak of. Also God forbid anyone gets injured on the job. Then that employee is really in trouble. Why is Walmart against unions? It's real obvious and it's real wrong. About that customer service--isnt it amazing how long it takes to check out or get your prescriptions when there are So many "employees" on the clock. I said when they did away with layaway they were cutting their throat. Imagine how many hundeds of thousands of dollars of merchandise is purchased all year by layaway, especially the holidays. And what if the general public really knew exactly how Walmart is ran. Every year, many Walmarts are remodelled to the point where within 4 or 5 years every Walmart is remodelled. And the price tag is very high and the waste is very high. Not only that, but each Walmart hires around 40 or 50 people "off the street" who have little to no experience in any kind of remodel experience and throw them into this tearing down, putting up, moving around process for the contractors to do their job and many, many of these "temporary" employees are injured, some seriously. They entice these people with the prospect of ending up with a regular job with Walmart. And it is so glamourized and people are so brainwashed about what an honor that would be to work for the Great and Almightly Walmart. Ah, yes many people pretend to be injured in many ways with many companies and so forth--so there has to be a lot of careful measures taken, but when someone's life is totally destroyed because of it, then Walmart still gets off really easy. Even more so when that employee lives in and works in a state that has not so great worker's comp laws. I even know of a customer who was injured bad while shopping and his life is ruined and Walmart got off real easy.
You know, to be in business it takes a lot of everything, money, experience, customer service, quality products, low prices, taking care of their employees and their customers. It is always unwise to spread yourself so thin, by trying to be everything like the latest venture into banking. This is why people should pay attention, are we the
"sheep" led by the "shepherd". Is it possible that the smiley face (Walmart) is the mark of the beast?
Only we, the people, can make Walmart change and they need to change everything.

I shop at Walmart, only for specific items, that I know are lower than I can find anywhere else. I live in central Texas, and there is no nearby K-mart. Although, I have never used lay-a-way, I was shocked to learn that they have discontinued it. Do they really think that they will be able to attract upperclass customers? What upperclass person would shop for designer clothes in Walmart? It just goes to show that a degree in business mangagement, doesn't trump basic common sense. It's a good thing that Sam Walton is dead. He would be appalled by the way his grandchildren are running things. I have a Walmart credit card. You would not believe how many Walmart employees do not know that it's a credit card. There is also a computer bug in their point-of-sale register, when using their card. I have to swipe it, two, three, or four times, for the card to be finally accepted. The wrong screen keeps appearing. It's the screen for "bank" credit or debit cards. The Walmart credit card is not recognized by this screen. I've tried numerous times to tell Walmart about this. I've talked to customer service; I've tried to tell them in their customer surveys; and I tell individual cashiers. They are incapable to correct this. I find all Walmart employees, poorly trained and with very little direction.

EVERYBODY knows that Wal-Mart sucks for customer service. Now if you have been there at any time of the day and when you finally go up to make your purchase at one of the 50+ registers, you'll notice (as you are the 4th person in line, waiting roughly 30 minutes) that there are only3 registers open!!!! WTF???? Has anyone ever seen every single register open? Why in God's name do they put so many registers in that place and only use a handful at a time?? I don't get it. OH and THEN when you make your way through the security detectors, there is a person wanted to check everything in your cart is on your receipt! I can understand they have a theft problem and they DO prosecute, but D*MN it makes me feel like I am the shoplifter! What other store does this? That sure doesn't make me feel appreciated as a customer. Wal-mart has some good stuff, sometimes not so good quality, but it serves it's purpose. Personally I think their produce stinks. I don't know how many times I have cut up a dry tomato, an onion brown inside and a green potato. But I agree, I think they are going downhill. many of my friends refuse to shop there.

I am currently a Walmart employee having worked for the company almost 2 years.
1. I am sorry people have employees with attitudes in their stores, but I have run across that in other retail/grocery stores as well. I treat customers the way I want to be treated and some even make a habit of shopping on the nights I'm working so I can wait on them. I always help customers and try to make sure their needs have been met when they walk out the door. I work as a cashier, customer service, self-checkouts and stocking.
2. Walmart hires based on your work/life experiences (they have a calculating worksheet they use to see if you qualify to earn more than minimum) and the ones who usually don't earn a decent pay are the ones who are young/inexperienced-haven't worked in 20 years while raising a family (not a bad thing) or like to move from job to job or place to place. I used to work for a retail chain named Ames and they paid only minimum wage to their cashiers and $1.00 more to stockers, I earn almost $5.00 an hour over minimum in one of the highest min. wage states as an overnight cashier. We also have a very high turnover in our store and some employees come back realizing the grass is not always greener nor the pay higher somewhere else.
3. The insurance premiums are about what I paid when I worked for a large auto/home insurance company as a licensed producer, not outrageous when you think of what a hospital bill would be without the insurance. I pay about $90 a month with a $350 deductible.
4. Not crazy about the new "uniform", I agree that it makes it difficult for customers to know who actually works there , a lot of customers seem to like to wear the same blue/khaki color we are supposed to. The range of blues & tans is too broad, some even wear turquoise or baby blue shirts or even stripes, too hard to "enforce" the dress code. The stockers are allowed to wear jeans since they can get very dirty putting out freight and I see nothing wrong with that. But we cashiers get pulled out to the floor to do the same job as them and have to be dressed in our blue/khaki. The powers that be should have come up with a better supplier for shirts, I already threw mine away that the company "provided" because they faded so darn fast. Walmart cannot call these "uniforms" or they will be required to pay for the cleaning of them so they are the "dress code".
5. Layaway-Being a single mom I definitely feel for those struggling to worry about food and a roof over their heads (not to mention utility/heating bills). I relied on layaway a lot while my kids were growing up and no they didn't have to have all the expensive gadgets, we lived very modestly. I could put something on layaway in October and know that my daughters would have maybe that one thing they really wanted on their Christmas list. But on the other hand, many layaways were canceled at the end or abandoned altogether. They should have charged more of a fee (K-Mart charges $5 we only charged $3), there should have been a cancellation/forfeit fee if you canceled the whole layaway, possibly be only be a 30 day instead of a 60 day (like some of the small discount stores like Burlington/Marshalls and allow only 2 layaways at a time. Maybe only have layaway in the few months around Christmas. I personally got rid of all my credit cards (including Walmart & Sams Club) and will never want them again. I buy everything with cash and layaway was my one way to even buy all the back to school clothes when I saw them because they wouldn't be there the next time I shopped. I just bought the book Sam Walton wrote "Made in America", I'm sure I'll be upset once I realize how much better this company was at one time.
6. Since I work at the store, I do buy a lot of my groceries from there, mostly dry goods & frozen. I go to a local farmers market for my veggies & produce and buy most of my meat in bulk from a butcher that I've used for years (will occasionally pick up something at the store we are in the mood for and don't have).
7. The only real problem I have is with is the attendance adherence. Since most of us were told when we were hired that every 6 months you were allowed 6 absences (if you are late 3 times that counts as an absence). So thinking that every 6 months you get a clean slate, people would start to call out again only to find out the slate is never cleared because it always goes back to the previous 6 months from the day you are "coached" on your attendance. We have lost some really good, hard working employees because of this procedure, the managers are not allowed to make any exceptions per corporate. Life happens, especially if you have kids or an elderly parent you are taking care of. It's not that you are lazy and don't want to work, you just have life priorities and no job should ever be the most important thing in your life.

I hate Walt-Mart - they have contributed to the desmise of "Main Street, USA" by having all their crappy products made in China! I don't understand why true Americans, who care about this USA patronize a store that has given China the billions of dollars that should have been kept in this country by creating more industry, therefore, creating more jobs, and manufactiring more QUALITY products - believe me, if these toy companies were manufacturing their products here in the USA, we would not be second-guessing us every time we pick us a toy, or every time we order fish at a restaurant -so what if we paid a little more? I would do it gladly knowing that it was a product "PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA" under strict quality guidelines and by American workers!

Wal-Mart, it seems most small town store owners know that they cannot compete with their prices, so they do not want one near them. Do I shop at Wal-Mart......You bet I do. I am on a fixed income and I do have to watch my pennies. I like the prices at Wal-Mart and I do not have to go from store to store to get what I need. I am sure that some stores like K Mart or Target might have a few items cheaper than Wal-Mart, but why go there for them when you are at Wal-mart. Small Store owner's be damned, sorry about that. I live in a small town called QuartzHill and the store owners are picketing the new Wal-Mart store that someday will be built in that area. I for one am thrilled and can't wait until it is built. Inspite of the people standing in the street with their picket signs protesting another Wal-Mart store to be built. This Wal-Mart will be only a few blocks from where I live, so that will save me from going five miles to the big New Super Wal-Mart. Oh yes, Target store has also bought a large amount of land right next to the Wal-marts land, so God bless them both...Sorry, but this is the way I feel and most of the folks that Live in this small Town Quartz Hill.

I read another viewer on Wal-Mart buying and selling goods from China......Let me get this straight....Wal-Mart is buying their goods from China. Now I have it right! OK, when I do go into any other retailer store, such as K Mart, Target, etc, etc. They all sell Chinese Goods....Why? Maybe its because we in this good old United States don't make anything anymore. Why? Because we priced ourselves out of the market with very high wages for one thing. Our jobs went overseas to many other countries. Why? because the major companies had to keep their prices low to compete with goods made from overseas. Thus...Lower profets for the company's. That is why we buy from overseas. We don't make anything anymore! Chinese goods seem quite good and work just as good as anything made or use to be made here in this good old USA and further more it is made a lot cheaper......Why! because they only pay their workers a living wage..such as 12 cents a hour in China, not $35.00 to $40.00 a hour for American's to make a Ford car. I would rather buy a car made in Japan or South Korea or China than a American Car because you get more in the long run. I am not Anti American as anyone else in this country that is driving a car made in another country or uses items from China or Korea. When I go to Wal-Mart, I do not look at what country the item that I wont to buy came from. I need it, so I buy it. So please put away your little platform on buying from China or anyother country.......Manufacturing in this country will not return to this country until the rest of the world reaches our standard of living.......and that will never happen, at least in my life time.

I keep reading from some of the articals and comments made in this artical. I really don't believe what I am reading. One comment was that she had a inlaw or outlaw that had worked in a Wal-Mart store as a manager and she found that their benafits were as bad or worse than those of a school teacher in Texas.........What does that have to do with the price of tea in China. Parden the pon......that is up to the teachers union in Texas. If you ask any store owner of any store about their benafits.....they are not the best in the west or east as far as that goes.
Why is Wal-Mart doing so well and is now one of the biggest companies in the nation? Is it because they can out sell everyone else? Is it because the people of this nation like their prices and spend their money there? Billions of dollars are spent at Wal-Mart each year and why! So to the people that does not like Wal-Mart......DON'T SHOP THERE, TAKE YOUR BUSINESS SOME PLACE ELSE. BUT DO NOT TELL ME OR ANYONE ELSE WHERE TO SHOP. There, now I have that off of my chest. If you do not like Wal-Mart, please take your business to another store.........who cares! I will spend my money where I can get the best bargan and everyone else be damned.
