Celebrities -- they're more than superior human beings, they're money-making machines. If these celebrities were stocks, which would be the shrewd buy?
One sure sign of celebrity is first-name recognition, and today's contestants have certainly reached that pinnacle. Oprah and Martha are brands known worldwide, Oprah for compassion and wisdom, Martha for style and elegance.
Martha Stewart's brand is still tainted by her 2004 insider trading conviction and her stretch in Camp Cupcake. Before then, her growth from model and stockbroker to America's favorite lifestyle celebrity was impressive. After authoring the bestselling book Entertaining in 1979, she transitioned to television with her hit show Martha Stewart Living, for which she gathered several Emmys. In 1987, she inked a lucrative deal with déclassé retailer Kmart as a lifestyle consultant, to help it break into higher price-point retailing. In 1990, with Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) she launched Martha Stewart Living Magazine. The zenith of her career came in 1997 when she took herself public. The IPO for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (NYSE: MSO) made her a billionaire.
Since her conviction, the company has struggled to make money. The company has four profit centers. In television, her version of the hit show Apprentice was a 2006 flop, while her The Martha Stewart Show faces tough competition. The company hopes adding Macy's to retailers of MS-designed goods will boost that lagging segment. Magazine sales of Martha Stewart Living chug along at 1.9 million, while internet revenue remains a small part of the empire.
Oprah Winfrey began life with far less advantage than Martha, and much has been made of her amazing transition from child of a poor Mississippi single mother to billionaire. What the two women share is exceptional intellect. Winfrey launched her career as a newscaster in Chicago before finding her true calling as cohost of a local talk show. In 1985, she received an Academy Award nomination for her role in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, a springboard for the launch, in 1986, of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her compassion, insight, and ability to talk with, and not down to, her audience and guests quickly made her a daytime hit. In a shrewd business decision, she started her own production company, Harpo Productions. In 2000, Oprah unveiled her own magazine, O, which has grown to 2.6 million in monthly sales.
She is known for her charitable work, including the recently opened Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Winfrey was #1 in the most recent Forbes Celebrity 100, with $260 million in annual earnings.
Two powerful women, and two powerful brands. So which would you pick?
Oprah is 53, Stewart 66, so she has the age thing going for her. Martha is still recovering from her conviction, while Oprah's charitable work has burnished her reputation. Stewart has been unable to elevate her show above the many competitors, while Oprah is solidly entrenched in her slot. Oprah is also more focused businesswise, while Martha Stewart the corporation seems to be chasing squirrels up every tree in the forest, with not much success.
So would you choose a good meal or a good chat?
Vote in our poll for Martha Stewart or Oprah Winfrey, and let us know in the comments why your choice has the financial edge in this match-up. Also be sure to check out our other Money Face-Offs.

I would rather watch Martha and learn something useful, than watch Oprah be Oprah. At least Martha gives everyone something useful to take with them when the show is over, instead of something home in the audiance on set with Oprah. You can get good chat at a local bar.

I would rather tune in to Martha and learn then tune in to Oprah and be told what I should learn. I like Martha she has a fun sense of humor, I used to watch Oprah and got tired of being told what book I should read and when I should read it. I felt she was phoney and not sincere with things she said and did, where with Martha she shoots from the hip and you know if she is pissed, happy, mad, glad and you get a lot out of her shows and her products are quailty. I learn from Martha but Oprah makes me feel like I hear a repeat record over and over again.

Martha teaches and Oprah preaches. I used to watch Oprah until she bored me with how great she is that is a real turn off. I learn from Martha and always have. She has a great sense of humor and she always shoots from the hip, Oprah tends to play stand on the fence .Martha gives it her all and doesn't pat herself on the back doing so she is willing to share her finds and what she has learned , Oprah tends to want to tell you how great she is for sharing with you..
Martha is class and she works her heart out 24-7 to make this place a better world, granted Oprah aint bad but she has nothing on Martha Stewart.

One of the main things I noticed about Oprah and Martha is that Oprah directs her audience to the experts in their field of the topics she discusses on her show. Martha knows how to do pretty much everything so she doesn't really have to direct people else where. Martha teaches you the-how to on her show, she bakes, cooks, cleans, crafts, repairs things, gardens, operates her company, magazines, homes ect. Oprah doesn't cook, bake, craft, clean, sew, fix it repairs she has others do it for her.
Martha can and Oprah can't. Both are business smart and have the right people around them to help make them look good. Oprah and Martha are both savey women who know how to make it all come together.

I do not like to pit one person against another in a public forum but from what I have learned over the years about Martha, all the talented people who surround her could be done away with and she would still have enough brains, spirit, and enthusiam to succeed, but she only has two hands! Whatever tree she wants to chase her squirrels up, I'll be following right behind them. I respect leaders who know what the heck they are talking about when they are trying to relate something to me. Martha knows her stuff!

Martha Stewart has never, never, never had an American industry take her to task in a court room.
Remember Oprah Winfrey in Amarillo, Texas being sued for defamation of American beef?
Martha Stewart has never used her show or her business as a soap box to hurt or destroy hard working Americans especially individuals producing food for the rest of the country.

OPRAH IS A FRAUD. SHE CAPITALIZES ON SENSATIONAL STORIES. IT READS TABLOID. MARTHA HAS MEANING TO HER SHOW AND IS HELPFUL. OPRAH DOES WHAT IS GOOD FOR HER AND IS "CORRECT". CUT OUT THE SAPPY STUFF AND HAVE ON WHAT IS RELEVANT. DON'T SUPPOR OBAMA JUST BECAUSE HE IS AFRICAN AMERICAN BUT SUPPORT THE BEST AND MOST QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB. MARTHA SERVED HER TIME AND IS TAKING THE LONG ROAD BACK. HOORAY FOR HER!!!

I have admired both but feel Martha has overcome obstacles that should take her to the top. Oprah always tends to ride the fence, but I feel her political involvement is not a very wise move. This could change my opinion of her and effect how much I enjoy watching her program in the future. I think she should examine her motives here.

The comparison is absurd. Oprah is a personality cult; Martha is a visionary and pioneer; she created and defines America's homemaking industry and she is America's Domestic Guru.
Martha was involved in no "insider trading"; this is an entrenched media fiction. It is complete hogwash that her brand is "still tainted" and that she is "still recovering." There is nothing "tainted" about the Martha Stewart Radio on Sirius and Macy's Martha Stewart Collection; and Martha is bigger than ever now with enormous moral stature.
Martha did nothing wrong for her brand or company to be "tainted." Any "tainting" and all "company struggle" resulted from the reckless and irresponsible media bashing on her. Martha has always maintained her innocense. She was railroaded royally and denied due process of law in an egregiously unfair trial. The "2004 conviction" was a bogus conviction.
As to charity work, Martha knows that charity begins at home, and she has funded with millions the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital. Millions spent in South Africa haven't been matched by Oprah in a similar program at home.
Regarding the "age thing," this is no factor - Martha is physically younger than Oprah. Martha lives a healthy lifestyle that includes yoga. Oprah is on a weight yo-yo and more than likely can't touch her toes; her age gives her no ticket to better longevity.
As to "chasing squirrels up a tree," this cynical comment reflects the writer's lack of competence to make an intelligent comment regarding the company's execution of its long-range strategic planning.
If Oprah were to be targeted for destruction by a rogue prosecutor, her personality cult would vanish and she would simply become history.

Martha Stewart was convicted for lying during a federal government investigation about changing a log entry and a stop loss agreement with her stock broker. There was insufficient evidence to prosecute her for "insider trading" and the trial was never about this.
MSLO did not produce "her version of the hit show Apprentice", Mark Burnett did.
Here's a "good thing"; go elsewhere for facts about a company, as this site is just trolling for hits.

Is Martha/Mdiddy Stewart still claiming innocence, or is an unrepentent, convicted, lying felon trying to sell lifestyle advice? Can encouraging disbelief in the justice system, and distrust in the fairness of the stock market be considered a form of violence?

"Martha/Mdiddy Stewart" is indeed "still claiming innocence." In fact, the Martha Stewart case is a condemnation of every aspect of the legal system, including the egregious incompetent legal representation she received.
All of the charges against Martha were as bogus as the big-time, trumped-up charge (10 years jail time and $2 million fine) that was thrown out at trial. The bogus charges came out of the ether, trumped up by a rogue prosecutor for career and political gain, using the weapon of USC 1001. The bogus charges lacked solid evidentiary foundation - and a Martha Smith would have walked free - no trial!
No American who becomes an iconic success through honest, hard work with their hands, God-given talents, ingenuity, and unique vision should be a magnet for bogus charges by a rogue prosecutor driven by crass ambition and a political agenda.
The name calling of "an unrepentant, convicted lying felon" certainly evidences a despicable, brainwashed numskull. This obviously media-brainwashed nitwit is also a liar who lacks any factual basis to assert as a truth that there was any "lying" by Martha.
The "justice system" in Martha's case was abused and misused upon her for political gain. This was certainly a "form of violence" against her in the denial of her constitutional protection under the Sixth Amendment.
No American should believe in, acquiesce in, or tolerate a "justice system" that is politicized.
Martha made an absolutely legal personal remnant stock sale of 3,928 shares of 7,730,100 shares that were traded - representing less than 0.05081% of shares traded. This sale was based on sound investment management principles. No different from any investor, "fairness of the stock market" asserts she owed no one an explanation for this miniscule, inconsequential, legal personal stock sale.
"Reality" obviously needs to get the facts of the Martha Stewart case and replace media propaganda with intelligent analysis of the facts. (In this regard, SaveMartha.com is a resource.)
It would be wise for "Reality" to channel all hostility toward a crusade for the repeal of USC 1001, which is abused and misused by rogue prosecutors as a political weapon and a weapon of injustice on innocent Americans. "Reality" may very well join Martha in the ranks of its victims.

I really enjoy Martha Stewart MUCH more than Oprah. As a housewife, mother and grandmother I think Martha offers ideas that suit my lifestyle. I NEVER watch Oprah. I do not understand how her show adds value to most people's lives. Also allowing Barak Obama to be the only political candidate on her show is more manipulative than informative. Martha may express her poitical choices, but she certainly does not stuff them down our throats. Martha can add charm, beauty, and peace to any one's life. Also, Martha does contribute to charities for the right reasons, not because she wants a pat on the back.

I have nothing but admiration for Martha. She is naturally talented, innovative, hard-working, business-savvy. She built her own empire. Contrary to others, I see nothing wrong with her personality. She is herself. Her shows were/are delightful to watch and so informative. She handled herself admirably during her debacle, showing strength and discipline. I wish her the best, deservedly so.
