Celebrities -- they're more than superior human beings, they're money-making machines. If these celebrities were stocks, which would be the shrewd buy?
One sure sign of celebrity is first-name recognition, and today's contestants have certainly reached that pinnacle. Oprah and Martha are brands known worldwide, Oprah for compassion and wisdom, Martha for style and elegance.
Martha Stewart's brand is still tainted by her 2004 insider trading conviction and her stretch in Camp Cupcake. Before then, her growth from model and stockbroker to America's favorite lifestyle celebrity was impressive. After authoring the bestselling book Entertaining in 1979, she transitioned to television with her hit show Martha Stewart Living, for which she gathered several Emmys. In 1987, she inked a lucrative deal with déclassé retailer Kmart as a lifestyle consultant, to help it break into higher price-point retailing. In 1990, with Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) she launched Martha Stewart Living Magazine. The zenith of her career came in 1997 when she took herself public. The IPO for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (NYSE: MSO) made her a billionaire.
Since her conviction, the company has struggled to make money. The company has four profit centers. In television, her version of the hit show Apprentice was a 2006 flop, while her The Martha Stewart Show faces tough competition. The company hopes adding Macy's to retailers of MS-designed goods will boost that lagging segment. Magazine sales of Martha Stewart Living chug along at 1.9 million, while internet revenue remains a small part of the empire.
Oprah Winfrey began life with far less advantage than Martha, and much has been made of her amazing transition from child of a poor Mississippi single mother to billionaire. What the two women share is exceptional intellect. Winfrey launched her career as a newscaster in Chicago before finding her true calling as cohost of a local talk show. In 1985, she received an Academy Award nomination for her role in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, a springboard for the launch, in 1986, of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her compassion, insight, and ability to talk with, and not down to, her audience and guests quickly made her a daytime hit. In a shrewd business decision, she started her own production company, Harpo Productions. In 2000, Oprah unveiled her own magazine, O, which has grown to 2.6 million in monthly sales.
She is known for her charitable work, including the recently opened Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Winfrey was #1 in the most recent Forbes Celebrity 100, with $260 million in annual earnings.
Two powerful women, and two powerful brands. So which would you pick?
Oprah is 53, Stewart 66, so she has the age thing going for her. Martha is still recovering from her conviction, while Oprah's charitable work has burnished her reputation. Stewart has been unable to elevate her show above the many competitors, while Oprah is solidly entrenched in her slot. Oprah is also more focused businesswise, while Martha Stewart the corporation seems to be chasing squirrels up every tree in the forest, with not much success.
So would you choose a good meal or a good chat?
Vote in our poll for Martha Stewart or Oprah Winfrey, and let us know in the comments why your choice has the financial edge in this match-up. Also be sure to check out our other Money Face-Offs.

The two women are very different. Oprah want to lead you to what she thinks.Martha presents something to learn, if you choose to do so.At my age I know where I want to go,and I don't need someone to lead me. However, I want to learn something new every day, so I choose Martha.Oprah's trip accross the country was not something I chose to watch.

I like to watch both, they both add to our lives. They both teach us. One through showing us Martha and one Oprah by having the experts. I think that having them both on TV is good. I have learned from them both. And I like Martha better know than before she went to jail. She is a happier person.

I prefer Martha over Oprah. Martha is a self-made empowered woman. She has worked hard for everything that she has and is, and is deserving of all that she has accomplished, and I admire her. She shows and teaches us that we can be empowered too. Anyone that doesn't like Martha, is either ignorant or jealous of her. She has given a lot to charitable causes but is a "silent" donor.

Both have accomplished much in many ways. I don't dislike Oprah, I don't go ga-ga over Martha.
Oprah is too hyper, Martha is more laid-back. I
rarely try to replicate what Martha does, but I enjoy watching her. She is gracious in old-fashioned way.

No contest! Which of these two savvy CEO's would I prefer to be in the company of if I get a boo boo?
Who could build us a shelter if stranded on some far distant lonely isle, have dinner prepared, flowers on the table. while meanwhile building a signal fire for our rescue? Why Mz. MS of course. (while I keep watch, zzzzz ;-)
Oh sure the oh so perfect Lady OW would probably be a great conversationalist, but so too is Mz. MS. However think about it, MS can and often does. Lady OW talks about it, is oh so saintly in her perfectionism of herself, why one could never quite achiever her out of reach standards. Mz. MS ain't perfect though she is certainly a perfectionist.
Then too, stranded on that isle minus hair and makeup artist-again no contest. We've all been rudely exposed to Lady OW minus most of that stuff she applies with a trowel, plus multiple wigs, extensions and the rest, yoik> Mz. MS is far more natural in all things.
Flip a coin in the brains department, each of these ladies is highly attractive for their intelligence, quite sexy in any women or man for that matter.
Me, just my opinion, I prefer a doer not a talker>Mz. MS wins my vote.....

Oprah has two personalities. One that talks about God, and giving to the less fortunate. And, one where she brags about the amount of money she extravagantly spends on "things" that she really doesn't need and that would help feed a lot of poverty level folks. She gives (with help), but not enough for all that she has. If she remembered her poor beginnings she would have more empathy.

AND, one other point about Oprah. I don't care that she is personal friends with Maria Shriver, John Travolta, Nelson Mandela, etc. I don't know who she is trying to impress with that ... it is certainly not me. You are not your friends! Sounds like she might be a little insecure that she feels it necessary to share that with everyone! NM has done great things for humanity, is actions speak loud and clear.

I just sat and read all the comments, I'm appalled
that there is still, so many people that will respond to something, and have not done their home work
before posting their comment aparently. most of the comments that I read should have not been allowed to even post.

I have only read one page of the comments and feel like one of the other persons that think this is rigged. I am 79 and read my daughers subscription to"Martha Steward Living" I really think she is a fake, if she did not have all the other people she employes to do for her like the garden etc. she would not be able to do it all alone. I do not think she is a complete fake but close . Oprah is a very kind thoughtful and intelligent person and I would take her over Martha because she gives very down to earth advice on everyday things that most people are interested in finding out about. Think I have written too much so will have to sign off OPRAH gets my vote

I think opra is the winner, I think Martha is a litlle much and she should be paying a little bit after she did brake the law, also i know she has been rude to severak=l people in person in the industry i see right thru her. at lrast opra is entertqaining. she doesn't claim to know all and she gets people on her show who are experts in thier fields so she doesn't have to fake being the know it all to all people get real opra is

Many innocent Americans have lived the nightmare of incarceration when they did nothing wrong. These innocent Americans had a trial and a jury. Martha has lived that nightmare.
Martha was never before a grand jury and not a single word spoken by her was officially recorded. There was no true recorded evidence that she broke the law, that she did anything wrong or that she made a mistake. Obviously, she was targeted for publicity on bogus charges by a rogue prosecutor whose career then went on a meteoritic rise.

I think that Opray is pretty full of Oprah. Once I was in her audience several years ago, I realized that and lost interest in watching her shows. However, I do recognize that has maintained a quality talk show. Being from Chicago, I am embarrassed that the Jerry Springer show is from here, as it appeals to the lowest common denominator and serves no purpose to humanity.
I also recognize that, though I am not a personal Oprah fan, she has done great things with her influence and her money. She is certainly a positive influence on society.
Martha Stewart however, has done nothing but promote Martha. She has built her empire on evil and wrongdoing. I will not watch a Martha show, nor shop in a store which sells any of her products.
I believe that the world needs to have values other than money and influence and would be a better place without her.
