In October 2005, I went to hear Bono, the lead singer of rock band U2 and global poverty-fighter, at New York University. He wasn't there to sing, although he was met outside the door by a crowd of adoring fans. He was there to advocate for the world's poor, sick, and hungry, sharing top billing with renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs.
During his talk, Bono explained how Sachs was his mentor, teaching him about the roots of poverty in the developing world, traveling with him to Africa, and convincing him it was possible to end global poverty. But lately, he lamented, when he called Sachs, he was told, "Sorry, he's with Angelina Jolie."
That line brought down the house. At that point, film actress Jolie was just coming under Sachs' tutelage. She was an increasingly important celebrity advocate for the poor, but she had nowhere near the creds of Bono, who was that year nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and named Time magazine's person of the year.
Fast forward two years and the picture has changed a bit. Bono is still large on the world stage as a humanitarian, social activist and rock star. But Jolie, in large part due to constant media focus on her relationship with actor Brad Pitt, has lately become a more prominent fixture in the news media.
Jolie has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency since 2001, but her involvement with Pitt starting in 2005 has increased her influence. Marketers now rank her among the most influential celebrities in the world. She has been photographed repeatedly on UN missions to Africa and Asia, adopting three children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.
Bono can still claim the most financial influence. He has helped organize massive charity concerts, including 2005's Live 8, and can claim some credit for convincing politicians around the world to forgive third-world debt and provide billions in foreign aid. His business ventures have grown, including a hotel and board position at private equity firm Elevation Partners. That firm's website praises U2 as a leader in "the management of its business operations and intellectual property."
Bono's artistic achievements as a rock superstar clearly surpass Jolie's film career to date. Her filmography recently includes playing Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart and Clover Wilson in The Good Shepherd. Both Jolie and Bono both have achieved numerous awards and accolades for their abilities.
But when it comes to their ability to change the world by virtue of their own personal endeavors, it's tough to choose which is the more important figure right now. Of course, there really is no competition, but if you had to vote on who had done the most to improve conditions for the world's poor, who would you choose, Jolie or Bono?
Vote in our poll for Angelina Jolie or Bono, and let us know in the comments why your choice has the financial edge in this match-up. Also be sure to check out our other Money Face-Offs.

I can't believe you people! Why do we need to pit these people against each other? Don't we have enough anger, destruction and death in this world? Must you add to it? Do you need to sow foment and discontent? Allow the haters to spew more of their hate and venom into the ethernet to pollute our atmosphere by creating an artificial bashing event? Isn't it enough that Bono & Jolie/Pitt are among the few who are actually trying to do good in this world?

Bono should win this hands down for his involvement in DATA, One Campaign, (PRODUCT) RED, Edun. Plus access to G8 leaders (Gleneagles in 2005, more recently in Germay), speaking at the TED conference, etc. Results are not measured by media attention but by real achievements, hopefully.

Both deserve respect for their efforts, but this is really no comparison. Bono should win hands down for his involvement in DATA, One, Product RED, Edun. This year (as in 2005 in Gleneagles) he was again invited by the G8 leaders in Germany, spoke at the TED conference in Tanzania (find out why it was held there in the first place!) and later this month Bono and DATA recieve the 2007 Liberty Medal. Like I said, no comparison.

Angelina Jolie -- first, because she is female; second she is not promoting herself!

Hullo.....? Mr Mannix (no detective you, it seems): From reading an article to writing(?) a comment, it seems you get lost. Jolie has never needed help from anyone, outside of Sachs and her awareness, then offer (paying her own way) to the UN, and her constant reading, researching, experiencing, on the ground upfront involvement, since 2001 She, as is clearly(!) written, influenced Brad after she met him on set of The Smiths 4+ yrs. later. Also. her consistent giving/setting up with 1/3 of her income directly to charities He's now active with her, plus building ecological friendly homes in Katrina aftermath at his expense, etc.

Anonymous: The legitimate news reporting has already
shown the great things Bono has done, as well, as Jolie: Ambassador to UNHCR Always on call. pays her way, visits and stays with all the needy, poor, maimed, as long as the UN wants her there. Recently, sent toSyrian/Iraqi border filled with camps of fleeing Iraqi families. It amounts to 30+ times she has been sent. Only flies on Commercial airlines, too. Has set up or contributed to charities/hospitals in Cambodia, Nambia, Indochina, India, etc, etc. The
proof of her acknowledge, along with Bono.

How unfortunate that Esteban seems to think that Angie needs Brad to get a ranking as a humanitarian. Perhaps he should go back and read the article again! Angie was getting attention as a humanitarian long before Brad was in the picture, although there is no doubt that the spotlight has increased in past couple of years.
I think Angelina and Bono have both done wonderful work, however I did pick Angelina because she has adopted 3 very needy orphans. Not only is she walking the walk in her public life, she is also doing the same in her private life, 24/7.

Well, since the author of this article left out most of Angelina's resume on the philanthropic and charitable stage and included almost all of Bono's, it's clear who they would like to see 'win' if, like Ms. Stone, you are shameless enough to call helping the disadvantaged and disenfranchised, a contest, like she is.
*(Jolie has funded projects and initiated bills that subsequently passed federal muster, out of her own pocket, and she sits on the board of the Millenium Village project together with Jeffrey Sachs - along with half a dozen other charitable projects.)
This article infers she's some neophyte looking for tutelage that prevented Bono from working with Sachs. Give me a break. Bono was joking fool. He was commenting and being silly 'in concert,' about Angie's allure, he wasn't legitimately complaining he couldn't meet with Sachs because of Jolie..sheesh.
How can you even begin to gauge what Angelina's individual influence on the collective social psyche is in terms of charitable giving and dollars (not to mention enumerable other areas - motherhood, womanhood, working motherhood, independence, sexuality, power, etc. - they will be writing BOOKS about her influence one day...if they aren't already)?
Ditto Bono.
But there's no reason to cut down one, and undermine their achievements to build up the other.
What kind of a sick world are we living in, when we take the very few productive and inspiring celebrities out there, and make them face off in a wrestling match - and further, throw mud at the one we don't want to 'win.'
____________
FYI:
Angelina Jolie: Unaccompanied Alien Child Protection Act in reaction to her previous visit to facilities for asylum seekers in Arizona. On March 8, 2005 Jolie took part at a National Press Club luncheon in Washington, D.C. where she promoted the bill and in support of it announced the founding of the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children, an organization that provides free legal-aid to asylum-seeking children with no legal representation which Jolie personally funded with a donation of $500,000 for its first two years.[52] The Unaccompanied Alien Child Protection Act eventually passed in December 2005. Jolie also pushed for a bill to aid 70 million vulnerable children in the Third World which was signed by President Bush in November 2005.

...and anyone who, like Mr. Mannix, believes you need to be 'rated,' by the media in order to first be a 'humanitarian,' "ain't much of a," human being and therefore shouldn't be commenting on what a "humanitarian," is to begin with.
Keep up the great work Angelina and Bono, you've inspired a lot of people to do more. I know, because I'm one of them.

who says Angelina doesn't promote herself, she does that more than anyone I know, I will choose Mia Farrow before I will choose her to represent women. Mia Farrow does same thing as she does and more but with less publicity, Bono has helped countries, elevate their poverty status, Angie just looks good to cameras when she is feeding the poor. What third world countries need is not for foreigners to feed their poor but fair trade, debt relief not Aid and poverty elevation which is what Bono champions...............he sees the bigger picture Angie sees the 20 mins Samaritan media label she gets. Mia has adopted a dozen children and we never heard about it why does Angie's 3 make so much noise with their pictures going for as much as 3 million to mags and the charities she claims she is giving it to never gets a penny..... BONO does win this hands down there is exactly no comparison it is just an insult to compare both.
