"After several challenging years, Corning (NYSE: GLW) has returned to profitability," notes leading quantitative analyst Vahan Janjigian in The Forbes Growth Investor.
Corning, he notes, makes glass and ceramic products for high technology applications. Its largest segment, Display Technologies, makes glass substrates for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which are used in notebook computers, desktop monitors, LCD televisions, and other consumer products.
IN addition, he points out, the telecom segment makes optical fiber and cable used for Internet and cable television services. And its environmental segment makes ceramic substrates and filters for emission and pollution control systems in gasoline and diesel engines.
Janjigian explains, "After several challenging years, GLW has returned to profitability. LCD glass substrate volume has risen as television penetration rates and screen size continue to grow. Tighter emission standards are bolstering sales of GLW's diesel engine products."
And, he adds, "The growing need to transmit large amounts of data has invigorated demand for fiber optic cable. For example, GLW supplies optical fiber for Verizon's expanding FiOS network."
The reasons to remain bullish on this stock, he contends include a technological breakthrough with highly bendable optical fiber that alleviates a key cost and convenience disadvantage as compared to copper cable, a new optical fiber customer in Europe, and high growth in diesel products sales.
The advisor suggests, "We forecast an expected 35-40% year-over-year volume growth for the LCD market in 2007. In addition, the board of directors has initiated a $500 million share buyback program and reinstated a cash dividend, which was eliminated in 2001."
