If you're tired of poisoning your kids with lead-painted toys from China or killing your pets with melamine-laced Chinese pet food, you may be wondering what you can buy that's made in America.
To its credit, China is trying to fix its reputation. Last week, according to CBS News, China's product safety chief Li Changjiang offered assurances that toys made in China would be "safer, better and more appealing. Before Christmas, we will certainly provide children safer, better and more appealing toys. They will certainly like them." To bolster that claim, on September 11th, China signed an agreement to prohibit the use of lead paint on toys exported to the United States.
As I posted in July, I expect that there could be a business opportunity to sell products to U.S. consumers that are made anywhere but China. Then I cited examples of an upscale New York grocery with no Chinese seafood and a New Jersey-based natural producer of premium dog food blended from meat and vegetables. However, I have not seen much in the way of new developments in the last few months.
So what are the choices for those who want to buy products made in the USA?
It's surprisingly difficult to find companies that actually make their products in America. For instance, you might think that Anheuser Busch Companies (NYSE: BUD) brews its beer in the U.S. However, while it has many plants in the U.S., it also brews in Japan, China and Germany. Hasbro Inc. (NYSE: HAS) makes its Monopoly board game in Waterford, Ireland, not in the U.S. And Wrangler jeans for the U.S. market are manufactured in Central America and Mexico.
I started off looking at companies on the Made in America site -- a show on the Travel Channel. This led me to a long list of companies. While many of the names on this list are headquartered in the U.S., many make some if not all of their products in other countries (to find out, I simply did a Google search on 'where is [product name] manufactured,' which usually led to relevant information on the topic). I decided to strike those names from the list I would write about and focus only on those companies that were fairly well-known brands which as far as I could tell actually made their products in the USA.
With the holiday shopping season nearly upon us, here's a list of 22 products which are made in America:
-
Toys: Crayola's Silly Putty (Easton, PA)
- Cosmetics: Burt's Bees (Durham, NC)
- Cosmetics: Merle Norman Cosmetics (Los Angeles, CA)
- Toys: Slinky Toys (Hollidaysburg, PA)
- Candles: Yankee Candles (South Deerfield, MA)
- Teddy Bears: Vermont Teddy Bear Company (Burlington, VT)
- Jeans: Union Jean Company (Arcanum, OH)
- Playing Cards: United States Playing Card Company (Cincinnati, OH)
- Outdoor Gear: Cabela's, Inc. (NYSE: CAB) (Sydney, Nebraska)
- Sound Systems: B&K Components (Buffalo, NY)
- Carbon Bicycles: Aegis Bicycles (Camden, ME)
- Boots: Red Wing Shoes (Red Wing, MN)
- House Tools: Stride Tool Inc. (Glenwillow, OH)
- Handbags: Unique Bag and Design (Akron. OH)
- Women's Baseball Caps: Madcapz (Chicago, IL)
- Plastic Boxes : Oppenheim Plastics Co. (Saddle River, NJ)
- Appliances: KitchenAid Appliances (Benton, MI) (manufactured in Ohio, Mississippi; Arkansas; Tennessee; and Indiana).
- Baskets: Longaberger Baskets (Dresden, OH)
- Kitchen cabinets: Merillat Industries (Adrian, MI) (manufactured in 11 U.S. plants)
- Paper supplies: Mrs. Grossman's Paper Company (Petaluma, CA)
- Louisville Slugger Baseball Bats: Hillerich & Bradsby Company (Louisville, KY)
- Clothing: Pendleton Woolen Mills (Portland, OR)
Do you have other Made In America suggestions? Please comment below!
Update: Thanks to all the commenters for adding new suggestions to the list and for pointing out that some of the ones I listed may not belong. Since Cabela's is a mail order catalog and does not make any products itself, we included it on the list although they are importing products made elsewhere. I stand corrected on Red Wing shoes -- it makes all but a few casual shoes and boots in China so I would take it off this list. If we define Made in the U.S.A. to include companies that manufacture here, buy all their raw materials from U.S. companies, and hire only U.S. citizens as workers, how would that change the list?
How much are you willing to pay for Made in America? On Sept. 24 I wrote a new post asking readers which basket they would buy -- one made entirely in America (most expensive), one made mostly in America (mid-priced) and one made all in China (much cheaper). Cast your vote!

Velcro USA makes most of their hook and loop products in the USA. (New Hampshire)
YKK USA has a huge production facility in Macon GA.
The issue is they need companies that use their products in the USA.

I try very hard to buy American at every opportunity, but it is almost not possible in the normal chain stores. I do not believe that a well run company can't make a profit in the USA, but shareholders demand every last dime they can get, and greedy CEO'S add to the problem. Please support any company that has USA on the label, and shun goods from companies that close their operations here and go offshore. We can still make a big statement to those companies by refusing to use their products. There are rumors that Hearshey Chocolate is now getting ready to close it's operation and move offshore, I am going to miss that companies products, I won't buy them.

I know this isn't something most people like to think about, but it is my family business. We have owned and operated a family funeral home, John A. Freyvogel, Inc., in Pittsburgh for 100 years, since 1907. A couple of years ago, a casket salesman pitched Chinese caskets as cheaper and just as well made. We said "NO". York Caskets are made in U.S.A., headquartered in Pittsburgh and that is all we sell. Be careful, if someone is selling you a casket door to door, it is probably a cheap Chinese casket that is poorly made.

I think having Pendleton on your list is a little misleading. If you look at the online catalog, the fabric is made in the USA. The clothes are actually "imported". That could mean they're made anywhere - but here.
Just FYI.
Also, note that old US favorites like LL Bean and Eddie Bauer aren't on the list. Virtually 100% of there clothing is 'imported'.

If you want bath and body products, soy candles and pet/child friendly dolls go to:

My products have no extra chemicals, lye or alcohol, are handmade from scratch right here in the US and my ingredients and supplies come from a green company here in the states. So not only would you be buying products made right here in the US but you'd be buying products that are better for you than the stuff on store shelves and your money would go to a military wife not a faceless corporation:)

I think we should only purchase American Made products. Next the dye in material of clothing may be dangerous to our skin. AMERICANS NEED TO WAKE UP NOW. KILLING OFF OUR NEXT GENERATION OR TWO ISN'T VERY NICE. Our country needs jobs and we should make in America. Trade was okay until countries started trying to kill us and our pets.

Of course A-B brews some of their products in other countries. What sense would it make to brew beer in the U.S. and ship it to Europe or Asia when they could brew in these respective markets and keep the product affordable and fresh?

When we outsourced our manufacturing plants to foreign countries we sent over good paying jobs for those who could not afford to go to college or for whatever weren't cut out for it. We sent over jobs that had great benefits. We sent over our ability to ensure that the products that were made were done with the committment, pride and safety standards which are in place here. We sent over our ability to remain independant and proud in the way we support and take care of our own. We sent over our economic past, present and future. Let's get some of it back! BUY USA!

Kimberly Clark has companies all over the planet, but none of their stuff is exported. So if you buy a Kimberly Clark item in America it was made in America, But if you buy it while overseas it was made at an overseas plant.

I have long felt that if we import most of our food, and goods, Americans will lose the knowledge, talent, and ability to produce the basic things we need. I try to purchase mostly Made in U.S.A., and have success buying locally grown foods, or lovely vintage items. www.Cutco-online.com makes their knives and garden tools in the U.S., and although costly, they are heirlooms. This company offers free sharpening service forever, what Chinese co. makes that offer? I have found Sterilite plastic containers made in this country, although I'm not sure they make all their containers here. My husband and I have traveled all over the eastern and mid section of the country, to find town after town impacted by the cheap goods we Americans have purchased for so long. Be aware that the phrase Made in USA, is not the traditional Made in U.S.A, which apparently is a cheap trick by China! Although I love traveling, I still try to buy mostly American goods, and am willing to pay more for quality. I also tell store managers I prefer American made, and encourage them to pass this information on. Everyone is impacted by this, and should make their preferences known.

Try watching "John Ratzenberger's Made In America". It is on multiple times during the week on the Travel Channel. It showcases 2 or 3 companies during the 30 minute show. It is really comforting to see all of the workmanship that is still being done right here in the good ol' USA!
