Interview: Dave Chalmers, COO, Validas Inc.

Validas logoI am very pleased to have been given the opportunity to interview Dave Chalmers, Chief Operating Officer of Validas Inc. Validas is a startup company that is assertively carving out a niche for itself in the realm of wireless telecommunications billing processes. Mr Chalmers explained that Validas is built by a team that hails from companies such as Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless, and he made clear that Validas presents its offerings supported upon the following premise: "Simplicity defines our service and detail defines our mission." In reflection of his company's declared intent, I found Mr. Chalmers to be both to the point and clearly definitive with his answers.

Dave Chalmers revealed to me that there's an extremely unique quality to the service offering that Validas puts forward in that Validas is thoughtfully positioned to benefit both wireless service consumers and wireless communications providers alike. Simply put, the focus of Validas is to save each and every wireless customer time and money by providing them with nearly instant clarity of their wireless communications bills, and then by giving the customer clear and concise input on how to best tailor their wireless service usage to more closely suit their particular needs and budget. The customer may then approach their service provider with a clearer definition of their needs and expectations, and the information needed to follow through on those expectations. Dave summed it up by telling me that above all else, "we are 100% focused on how we can help consumers and small businesses with our service."

I asked Dave to describe exactly how a customer would initially utilize the service provided by Validas and he outlined the process as follows: "Log in, upload your wireless bill, Validas engine kicks in, 10 seconds later analysis reports are generated. Simple." I myself don't have wireless service (yet), so I didn't have an opportunity to test the services provided by Validas for myself, but I am considerably impressed by the clean and usable design of the Validas website, and reviews that I have read indicate that the process is at least as simple as Dave indicates.

So what advantage does Validas analysis provide to the consumer? In an earlier statement, Mr. Chalmers summed it up like this: "Validas answers the questions of confused wireless bill payers: Why is my cell phone bill not the same as the rate in my plan? Am I signed up for the best wireless plan? Was I charged correctly for my wireless usage?" The analysis is then followed with "a thorough breakdown of deep business analytics highlighting the information that provides each user with charge verification details, and allows for the comparison of their current wireless plan to the latest and greatest wireless options for their provider."

In short, the Validas wireless bill analysis technology gives you a real-time comparison between what you signed up for, what you got, what you paid for it, and what's newly available. It then gives you the basis for making further educated decisions. With over 600 wireless bills uploaded as of this writing, The Validas "Worst Cell Phone Bill in America" page claims average yearly savings reported of $235.21. Frankly I'm impressed.

Validas has already awakened interest within the blogosphere, and the conversation largely mimics this discussion on TechCrunch. One blogger over at Solo Technology stated that Validas provided suggestions that would save $44 per month on a $150 cellular bill. What doesn't seem to be getting much "air time" yet is the truth of the inception of Validas, which is described by Dave Chalmers as taking, "over a half century of wireless, telecommunication and information technology experience from companies like Research in Motion and Verizon Wireless ... to pursue a passion ... and make a difference, one customer at a time."

The long-term strength that I myself find nestled snugly within the Validas analytical concept is the company's unique positioning at the point where wireless customers most tangibly intersect with their service providers, that being at the point where the money changes hands. I asked Dave if he sees Validas as a facilitator within that relationship, to which he responded, "We are symbiotic to the telecommunications carriers, as we are both here to help the same consumers. Validas wants to help reduce the number of times a consumer needs to call into the customer care centers. Our model tangibly contributes to increased customer satisfaction levels." That has to be good for everyone involved.

I did ask COO Chalmers many more questions regarding the building of the company and some things about marketing angles. He willingly gave me far more good information than I can reasonably place in a blog. However, considering that the life of BloggingStocks is investment driven, I couldn't leave out the one obvious question: Will Validas be considering an IPO? Dave responded succinctly, "It's a bit early for us to start considering ringing the bell in NYC, but 'Never say never' is one of our mottoes."

My thanks to Dave Chalmers, Tom Pepe, and the rest of the fine people at Validas.
