Some of the readers who commented on my Made in America post feel so strongly about buying products that are made here that I think they would be willing to pay more for them.
This got me to thinking about just how much more people would be willing to pay for a product that is actually made in America. So I am asking you to consider voting in a hypothetical poll. Imagine you could purchase one of three baskets from Longaberger:
- A $90 11" Round Keeping Basket made by American citizens working in an American factory made 100% of American materials (this is a hypothetical product and price).
- A $59 11" Round Keeping Basket made by American citizens working in an American factory whose basket shell was made in America but whose lining was made in China (many commentators said this is how Longaberger currently makes its baskets and this is a real price for a real product); or
- A $20 11" Round Keeping Basket made by Chinese citizens working in a Chinese factory made 100% of Chinese materials (another hypothetical price).
I would be happy to send the results of this poll to Longaberger's CEO. Maybe if enough of you are willing to pay a premium for an All-American basket, the company will start making them.

I have sold industrial chemical & coatings in Mexico for the last 25 yrs. I remember in the 80's if you bought something made in Mexico everyone thought it was poorly manufactured!
Last year I purchased electric windows for my 1964 Chevrolet Impala and noticed that they were made in China and I was having problems with the control switches. Nowwhen I purchased a switch made in Mexico the man told me This is a much better switch that the one made in China he said because it is made in Mexico!!!
Go Figure!!!!

People can click the $90 selection all they want. The real proof is in the fact that Wal-Mart exists. People want cheap goods regardless of where they come from. Toxic chemicals in the paint NO PROBLEM its on sale. I remember the whole made in America slogan on goods from 10-15 years ago where has that gone? Wal-mart stamped that out and we go back to American Idol. In a country where barely half the people able to vote actually go out and do it do you really think we care about made in America and if we did the lobbyists and their puppets in Washington wouldn't hear us regardless.

It is hard to find anything anywhere that says "Made in America" I would like to be given the chance. I buy SAS shoes for that reason only, I drive a Cadillac car, it was made in Mexico. I look for Made in USA and don't find it.

I always buy American made whenever possible, even though there are large numbers of prodects available here it gets tougher every day. I don't mind paying the added expense. I do think the government should place huge tarriffs on imports from countries that have such a rediculous blance of trade as China has. This would balance out some of the costs. You know America is in a bad way when Japanese automakers such as Subaru and Toyota can manufacture cars here cheaper than they can in Asia or even Mexico.

I would pay more for the fully-American basket. I can give a good example of this situation from last winter.
I wanted a new backpack/bag for my laptop, and I was going to get one made in The USA if it was the last thing I was going to do. At first, I spent all my time in the retail stores checking tags, thinking one of these has GOT to be made here! Unfortunately, I didn't find one. I had to turn my search in a new direction. (Of course, the Internet!)
There were few manufacturers to choose from. None of these bags seemed to be as feature-clad as some of the bags in the stores, but they all served their purpose. I ended up going with a messenger-style laptop bag from Chrome. I love it! It's extremely durable, has all the pockets I need, and even has a lifetime warranty. It costed almost twice as much as a comparable LOOKING bag, but ultimately, you get what you pay for. I would wear out a cheaper bag in about a year. The one I have that was made here barely looks used.

Not much. Look at America's largest retailers, Wall Mart and Sears Holdings. Not much of their stock is made in America. And it's all about price. If any retailer sells something for less, the other has to at least match it. It just costs more, short term, to manufacture most things in America.

I might buy a less expensive keeping basket made in the US with a lining made by a Philippine, Mexican, Thai Company. The key point for me is China. I have for a long time avoided anything made in China if possible. China's political situation is so horrific and they are such a danger to us that I do not support them.

we need to pay more for products made in Ameica and travel more in America and eat Ameican grown food and take care of our homeless and pay our workers more so that they will have more money to spend in our country so that we will have less homeless, less crime and respect ourselves. Please tell me why in this day and age America can not build a car that everyone wants. Show us a car better than a BMW, MERCDEDES, HONDA and lets everyone buy one

I am a designer who makes one of a kind gifts, housewares, clothing. People love the things I make and always tell me I should make them to SELL.... but when people can buy things made in China for so much less than even the cost of my materials... not to mention labor (of love), THAT is what they do.... even though they love the things I make here in my studio in the good ol' USA. At least I feel good that I can give my grandchildren and other loved ones gifts and toys that are NOT harmful.

I have only been in a Walmart store a few times in my entire life. The closest Walmart is about 30 miles from where I live. I don't miss it one bit...However I DO wish a JoAnns Super Store was closer to me. (Oh well, we DO have lots of Trader Joe stores near us... so we eat really good food for a lot less).

I don’t like taxes, but I believe we should have a federal sales tax of say 2% on all imported goods at the retail level. I think it could do two things. Make consumers aware of just how much of what they think is American made products, that are actually being imported, and it, could possible promote Made In USA. Manufacturing in this country has been declining for a long time. And unfortunately companies will take their business elsewhere to save pennies on a dollar. Most think Americans don’t care. We just want it at the cheapest price. Maybe it is true. We were the innovators. We use to produce products for the world, now we import them. I wonder how long it will take before we become a third world nation.

450% markup for it to be made in America? That's kinda stretching it... well, thats REALLY stretching it. While people may say "sure, i'd pay $90 for $20 for it to be from America" in practice there is no chance that would happen. Honestly, i dont know if i'd pay $40 for it to be made all in america. It's a basket... please... can we atleast be a little realistic. No offense intended, but this is easily the worth poll you could have made it. Ask people what they'd pay, not giving them choices. Then you'd see some results.

I believe your readers need to know their choices better. $59 would be the cost for just the basket with out any plastic protector or fabric liner. Those are optional choices--the basket could be used without those accessories but some may choose to purchase the accessories, which are not made in America. The $59 Keeping basket is 100% American made.

We know a lot of food is grown in America. We constantly hear, "we feed the world". These foods however, are basic foods and require time, effort, and labor to put on the table. I read in your article that China will not ship any more toys to America painted with lead paint! What does that say to the rest of the little kids in the world?

I beg you to go here to see what is really going on in America. We have to fight this. If you think about it you will know it is true. After all it was Kennedy/Bush who tried to get amnesty passed.

Yes, I would pay more for a Made in USA product, provided the product was better than the imported one. American workers have become used to higher wages;selling an affordable product that is made in usa is hard. At Craft Fairs, buyers do pay the higher price for well-crafted,one-of-a-kind items;crafters do not make a high profit. We need more seamstresses making women's clothes here.
