Nintendo's Wii has been the big success of the latest generation of video game consoles. Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox 360 is making up some ground with the success of Halo 3. As Doug McIntyre recently wrote, its first week sales of over $300 million could "pull the Xbox 360 out of the mud."
But where does all of this leave Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE)? Probably nowhere good. With Wii already having established itself as the big winner and Microsoft making a late push toward success, Sony would appear to be the odd man out.
But BusinessWeek interviewed Kazuo Hirai, the marketing man in charge of the PlayStation 3, about how the company is looking to right the ship. He was predictably optimistic, saying that the company would be releasing a lot more games over the next few months, and really emphasizing the PS3 as a gaming system, whereas before, it was marketed as a sort of all in one entertainment system -- obviously that strategy didn't work.
So far the PlayStation 3 has created staggering losses for Sony, and a price-cut will probably be necessary if the machine has any chance. But whatever Sony does, it may be too late.

Dumbest article ever.
The PS3 is selling faster worldwide than the PS1 and PS2 did and outside of the US its also selling faster than the Xbox 360 did.
Thats a great sign for Sony seeing as they havent released any of the big games yet and its still expensive.

PS3 is selling better and faster than the PS2. I would love to be on the drug you are on because in my World the PS3 is collecting dust on the store shelves. Also PS3s are being traded in at record numbers because of Halo 3.
3 main reason the PS3 will fail...
1.) Over a yr and only 5 exclusive titles with only 1 of them being any good (Resistance Fall of Man)
2.) Blu-ray drive = Expensive bad idea
3.) Lost of many exclusive licenses including Metal Gear Solid

Steven Smith, are you the one on crack? Goto VGchartz.com, and vgcharts.com and look at the console release sales history of all the console, the PS3 is selling faster than PS2, 1, and Xbox 360. PS3 sold half of Xbox 360 did thus far and 360 has been out almost 2 years.
Your wrong: Resistance and MotorStorm both sold over a million copies in a single Quarter, it took Gears of War to break the million barrier on Xbox 360. even Call of Duty 3 barely hit a million sales in a quarter!
Heavenly Sword and Warhawk are also extremely good games that are on its way to hitting over a million sales as well.

PS3 momentum is building, best platform of the 3 added benefits of AVCHD or other High definition file playback directly from memory key or disk or USB Disk (if needed), blueray player, wireless internet, music player, play back your photos in highdef slideshow complete with pans and zooms. Store all your videos, music and photos in one unit and show them off from the comfort of your armchair by and oh yea it is a game machine for the "kids" as well.

PS3 will do just fine when the price per unit goes down. I would never buy the Wi, because who wants to play Call Of Duty with a silly Mario looking charachter as the enemy. Thats all they generate. ALmost all games are childish looking and just idiotic to me.

Glad to see so many folks interested in stocks also interested in gaming....but yeah I'm so tired of business/stock pundits talking about the console war. They seem to be really uninformed....the fact of the matter is...and correct me if I'm wrong...console sales are important but most of the money is made on software...and certainly the Wii is selling like gangbusters...and of course it would its got a nifty (albeit fadish controller scheme) and a palatable price point. Give props to Sony for being innovative...but I wonder if over the next few years...will this new group of "casual" gamers that Nintendo is attracting en masse...will they really be buying the games on a regular basis like the more "hard core" gamer. I really doubt granny and soccer mom will be monthly trips to pickup games from their local Best Buy or buying online via Amazon. Admittedly as a PS3 owner, I'm placing my bets on Sony. Frankly, they've earned the credibility when it comes to consoles. Certainly they've made many mistakes in this generation but as that price comes down and it will and the phenom games that are in the pipeline are released Sony will pull ahead. Again if history is any indication they said the PS2 would be a flop for many of the reasons they cite today (in fact the situation is almost identical) but the PS2 went on to sell 100 million units+ and still selling STRONG mind you. Never mind the tremendous software sales.....in any case when it comes to gaming consoles history tells us to not bet against Sony.

Well i looked at those sites posted earlier. I DO NOT see a similarity between ps2 and ps3 or ps1 during the first few months. The ps2 in the last 6 months outsold the ps3. The ps3 has alot of good games, but they need plenty more. They also suffer from developers giving games quick ports to the ps3 due to the low installed base. There are tons of reports of sports games running much better on the 360, and the ps3 version runs at a lower resolution and has features cut ect. I think there are some exclusive titles on the horizon and next year should be interesting.. but the ps3 is hurting right now. Alot. I hope for the sake of competition they survive it, a true price cut couldn't come soon enough.
