The Associated Press is asking a question that is practically blasphemous -- the outcome of which could change the face of the music industry: Are record labels really necessary, especially for established artists?
With acts including Madonna and Radiohead forgoing traditional record deals, and international superstar Robbie Williams signing a complicated deal guaranteeing him 80 million pounds over four albums, including some revenue from live events, it's clear that the the traditional concept of labels signing artists and paying them royalties is changing. Radiohead has decided to make its album available online only and let fans decide how much to pay.
Some argue that these are exceptions -- traditional record labels are still a must for all but the most established acts. Yet even lesser-known acts can promote their music on sites like MySpace and Facebook, which allow users to feature the songs they like on their pages. A lot of young people get introduced to music this way, forgoing outlets like MTV and the radio, which are seen as too commercial and passe.
The shift probably will be gradual, with better-known acts making the leap first. But as the methods of music distribution and hit-making change, so too will the role of the record label. Long term, I think that role will become a lot less relevant.

The way it is now, as long as you have a product or material that a majority wants or, is liked enough to be passed around the internet, the big boys will come looking for you. theres always a greedy company looking to reap the rewards from someone else ideas. you dont NEED the big boys, you just NEED to have something they want to sell to the consumption machine, much talent gets noticed on the net then gets PICKED UP, most of the stuff the record co's and big Film houses are doing is just crap anyway, if your a true artist youd stay clear of them so you wont have to change your act to please some fool who cant remember your name at the meeting.

the record companies are obsolete unless people continue to be brainwashed by what they sell. Simplicity coupled with mediocrity in music and composition has made record companies dinosaurs in the field of entertainmen as well as mind body medicine. a new paradigm shift has allready begun with the internet the internet the King of the future. and with the changes in mind body consciouness which citizens of the U.S. are being forced to embrace. the barriers will collapse.

Bands need record deals for tour support. It costs a fortune in gas, lodging, food, and production to create the music you love to download. If the band doesn't tour, no one will know who they are outside of a small band of home-town loyalists. Myspace goes only so far. When a band is signed, it gets better bookings, and therefore bigger crowds to buy their music and merch. If they're lucky, it will snowball from there.
