If you haven't heard of the GPhone, listen up! That's because TechDaily reports Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) is shipping 50,000 of them.
The GPhone is supposedly being made by a company in Taiwan. A UBS analyst has confirmed that Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC will ship about 50,000 cell phones running on a mobile operating system made by Google by the end of 2007.
Benjamin Schachter, one of the analysts who worked on the report, said that these 50,000 Gphones will not be sold to the public -- instead they're going to be available for developers only to understand how the software works. Shachter thinks Google will offer more details at an October 24th analyst event.
I wonder whether an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) representative will attend that event...

And Apple should 'watch out'? For 50k phones? They sell that many iPhones in a day!

The Gphone is not going to be competitive with the IPhone because they appeal to different markets while using different marketing strategies. The IPhone is aimed at the high-end smart phone market, acquiring customers who do not mind shelling out top-dollar for their phone. But the GPhone, with its advertising based model, appeals to people who would like to spend less on their phone and wireless bill, opting to allow advertising to help offset some of those costs. The phones are not even competing with the same customers, so the impact of the first GPhone generation on the sales of the IPhone will be minimal.

Whoever comes up with the cheapest phone with the most user friendly features and services at the lowest price will win. Just like TV's and calculators, over time people expect more for less. The iphone has already been reduced by $200. for this very reason. People want features for less.

A new or better operating system will NOT be on these GPhones!
Apple OS X Tiger, soon to be Leopard, is the most advanced and user friendly OS. Until an OS is comparable, it will be difficult for competitors to catch Apple.
The GPhone will probably have a Google software sample for software developers to use for testing and advancing their own applications on a mobile device. This is similar to Intel sending test chip samples to computer manufacturers to prototype and develop units before incorporating the chip into mass produced computers.

"Apple OS X Tiger, soon to be Leopard" is intentionally crippled on the iPhone. It won't be a superior operating system utill it is opened up to developers.

Just because of the name Gphone vs iPhone, it really not automatically make it comparable to the iPhone. You can have Gphone or mPhone, o Nphone or Sphone, whatever, but for now there is only one iPhone! get it!

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, is on the Board of Directors of Apple and is a close friend of Steve Jobs. Google is not going after the same market segment as the iPhone. I would assume that Apple will leverage whatever Google does for its betterment in the marketplace.

ChrissyOne: read the article again.
Those 50,000 phones are going to developers so that when the phone is actually released, it will be supported by lots of software.

How do you know? Have you seen the GPhone OS?
> Apple OS X Tiger, soon to be Leopard, is the most advanced and user friendly OS.
Most advanced? Will the iphone support more than the handful of applications (without turning into a brick), GPS navigation, bluetooth audio, text to speech, spreadsheet, pdf? I hope so. My 3 year old "windows mobile" phone does all that already.
I am not a windows fan (as I use a Mac everyday) and this is not a Mac vs Win vs Google OS discussion. I just can't stand people making claims without any facts. This is why "mac fanboys" don't get any respect.
