Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) may be looking at entering the largely failed waters of online grocery shopping, according to sources. If the world's largest retailer is really on the cusp of trying to form a strategy to deliver grocery products to customers in the markets it serves in the U.S., it may indeed have something worth fighting for.Unfortunately, the past of online grocery shopping is littered with failures -- most notably, Webvan. While the concept is very neat and handy, the logistics just have not worked for any company yet. But then again, not many companies have the location breadth or resources of Wal-Mart. If any company could make this work, it would be Bentonville's brightest.
The retailer has the locations and the selection to serve almost every populous area of the U.S. -- all it needs is a strategy and a delivery fleet. Although the company's most prolific effort thus far deals with parcel delivery of food products (just like the model Amazon.com uses), it could trump all others by offering same-day or next-day delivery that could feature a majority of pre-packaged and fresh food from a local Wal-Mart location.
Sure, Wal-Mart may need to charge a delivery fee of recoup transit costs, but this is a field that no national company is working in from coast to coast. It's Wal-Mart's game if it wants it.

We love to shop the mom and pop stores when we can. Of course we have to do shopping in the larger stores also. We have tried Walmart and their meats are not what I would buy or their produce. The delivery service would be great for those who cannot get out if they prefer Walmart.
To Patricia: Get a grip. Type A personalities are miserable people and everyone has his/her opinion. That's the American way.

Tell you what: Now that food is grown in other countries and shipped, flown, and trucked to the end-eater, the food is overpriced, mishandled, virtually spoiled, and even when it's not it just doesn't tast very good at all. Industrialized farming benefits only the goddamn chemical companies and the huge subsidized industrial farm companies like Cargill.
Time now to EAT LOCAL!

Well i kinda agree of this idea and desgree! on the one hand it would be good for the people that cannot get out and shop like they would love to do! and then you have to look at the way that (Wally World)Wal-Mart runs its Stores! For instance my daughter went on line and order a Hollenween Huanted House $400.00 it took 5 weeks to get to our Wal-mart Store and when she went to get it she had to wait 3 hours to get it after they pulled it out from the back of the store and she signed for it the manager walk away. now she is 5 months Pregnant and has a 15 month old daughter with her she could not get no help in taking it to her Van so she push it to her Van and loaded her daughter and then pushed the Large Box into her Van!! Now if they cannot help a Pregnant women with a box to her auto, then i don't see this happen at all and their meat Department!! Well let me say that they are suppose to keep all the Meats below the little line so it will stay Freash!!! but they don't so be careful when you buy the Meats. And i do shop at WALLY WORLD. But not for everything thank you for listening.

Since Sam and his wife passed on, prices have started going up on groceries at WalMart, sometimes precipitously. This might be in anticipation of having to charge more for delivery to Internet buyers. With the cost of transportation and the aggravation of dealing with check-out lines these days, I suspect that the time of grocery shopping online may be upon us and thankfully so. My elderly aunt Hansle Lee used to get her groceries delivered by Safeway for a small extra charge, and she was glad for the service. With her mitral valve heart condition, shopping was just too much effort for her. I'm not handicapped in the slightest, but the savings in time (in particular) and gasoline costs by such a delivery service would certainly be worth the extra charges for most busy people like me. I hope they get it set up soon and are fair in pricing it.

I, too, am disabled and have to rely on friends and neighbors to help me with my grocery shopping.
I have found a pharmacy that delivers (free of charge). Also, Walgreens is on-line - free delivery with $25.00 + purchase. There are meat stores that deliver.
If only people would understand that we are not all as healthy as you, and we need a little help. AND, we are not all on food stamps.
I think this may be a big concept of e-Bay and other on-line auctions. I love them all.
At least we have brains, MORON McGurk.

interesting. thanks for reporting it.
on walmart in general and to their loyal shoppers. those low prices have a huge cost. don't be fooled. you wal mart shoppers do not save money. the tax breaks and govt handouts and kick backs walmart gets to open stores costs you new roads, better schools, and other tax payed services.
same goes for walmart's employees. walmart has the tax payers subsidize services they should offer their employees. walmart employees are the biggest group in the country of full time employed workers who have to use wic, food stamps, housing subsidies, and all other tax payer paid govt services to just survive. it's a crime in this country that any full timed employed worker needs to have handouts to survive. so keep shopping at walmart and saving those nickels. maybe one day you'll wake up and realize those low prices have a huge cost and we all are paying for it.
myself, i refuses to shop at walmart and support their system of cutting overhead and costs while taking from the tax payers and reaping huge profits.

1st - the cost of gasoline
2nd - average pay for delivery driver would be under $7.00 which means "unreliable vehicle".
3rd - delivery driver would have to be bonded to assure that items wouldn't come up "missing" at delivery point.
4th - Wal-Mart is for the most part - rural - making delivery costs higher into the city or further out in the country.
5th - people who live in rural settings usually don't have the extra income for home delivery.
Bottom line: this would only work in a tightly knit city such as New York City with a huge urban population.

People who are on the food stamp program are not necessarily losers.
To all you people who believe Walmart is the best thing since sliced bread--pay a bit closer attention. Yes, the prices are lower...so is the quality and if you want to know why, read the book titled "Fast Food Nation". Walmart tells their suppliers "Meet this price or we go elsewhere.". The suppliers in turn cut corners in quality and benefits to THEIR workers and the whole thing goes downhill from there. I am certain that what Walmart has become wasn't what Sam Walton had in mind for his company. They have litigated their way into towns where they are not wanted, run small businesses out of business and offer products that are cheaply made with cheap material. Children's clothing cannot be passed down to younger siblings as in the past because parents are lucky to get something to last through even one child let alone more than that. My grandkids are wearing some of their parents clothing. Do you think that you could do that with things purchased at Walmart today? of course not. Please people, look beyond the price tag to how it gets there. Low prices come on the backs of the people least able to afford it.

I think this is a great idea but only because it could make it a one shop stop regardless of the reasons. Though for those that feel this is because people or lazy I would hope that one day you are able to remove your blinders and realize that this plant doesn't revolve around you. I am in Iraq supporting the US Military, as a civilian and with the pride of being a prior service member, but contractors and civilians dont get support packages with the little items that people can take for granted even tooth paste and deoderant. The PX's are small and usually dont have much and are always very very crowded for several people that I work with and myself have been using NetGrocer.com for quite some time to get alot of or things from cereal bars to toiletries and they are always curtious and ship rather quick so you arent waiting to long. This is a such a help and so nice to have when especially when you don't have many other options that are willing to ship so far from home. I say good luck to Walmart! I hope it works for them and can help others regardless of there reasons for not being able to make it to the store!

I guess all WalMart stores are different. I get lots of polite help at our WalMart and the bakery & meat dept. seem vey good. I also buy a lot at the "Good Food Stores" but that does get pricey. I am feeding a vegan..tough. Everytime I pick up a paper there is some other store using child labor/ slave labor etc. or doing criminal financial dealing. What is one to do? I am partially disabled so the online shopping would be helpful for me as it would be for others in my category. Live & let live.

If this can be done in a competitive and profitable manner then Wal-Mart is the one who can do it. They are delivering $4.00 prescription drugs and who have thought that was possilbe.

To McGurk. You really need to think before you speak. Wal Mart Is for every age and every financial background. I am neither a loser or unemployed. And if you go in Walmart and look around at the people in there you will notice a wide variety of people.

I've never shopped for groceries online, but after reading this, maybe I will check out the possibilities. I have a heck of a time finding specialty meats, suck as lamb, duck, or certain kinds of fish, in any of the grocery stores in my area, and even most butcher shops don't carry them. Maybe they are available from online grocers?

Grocery Delivery has been tested over and over again and is just about there.
Walmart like other companies have to stay ahead and purge further. It will work
and let the biggest Retailer finish all the experimenting.
Many new gourmet companies got it down and Schwann Food Service which
has thier own delivery personnel. As you can remember companies like Jack in the Box
and Burger King attempted and tested delivery. It didnt work at the time, But times
are changing and fried food sales are not what they used to be.
Face it folks, If you know the UPC codes of the items in your kitchen and dont want
to get your butts to the grocery store and wanted delivered, you will use the service.
You have to stand for something so you dont fall for anything.
