Yesterday, during the Boston Red Sox' sweep of the upstart and exciting Colorado Rockies, crybaby extraordinaire Alex Rodriguez decided it was "the time" to announce he was opting out of his contract with the New York Yankees and filing for free agency. He had to make a decision within 10 days after the World Series ended, not within 10 minutes of the start of Game 4.
What a selfish, self-centered you-know-what. This guy is a total and complete goofball. Sure his stats are fearsome, but he has never won at any level a championship. He had great numbers on flailing Seattle Mariner and Texas Ranger teams, but both rarely played .500 ball. After four seasons with the Yankees, Mr. No-October has taken the chicken's way out. The attempt to upstage the Red Sox and Rockies should not be forgiven nor forgotten by the baseball brethren.
This guy comes to New York and played next to Derek Jeter -- a real ball player. Jeter will never hit the home runs that A-Rod does -- Jeter has 195 career home runs in 12 seasons, compared to Rodriguez's 500 and some. But Jeter has won more games than A-Rod ever will. Derek Jeter may be one of the most clutch players and hitters to ever play the game. Jeter may go 0-4 in a game but make a diving stop at shortstop to kill an opponent's rally. Jeter may get the stolen base at the right time to start a rally: Jeter will sacrifice himself and hit the ball to the right side to move a teammate. Bottom line, Jeter is the complete player. With him, it's all about team.
With A-Rod -- it's all about him. In the playoffs, Rodriguez has been a total and miserable failure. Jeter is clutch. In the playoffs, year-in and year-out, Derek Jeter is the toughest out. Rodriguez is 0-18 in the playoffs with runners in scoring position: the ultimate barometer.
Did A-Rod help the Yankees with their revenue line? Seats are filled with or without this guy. The radio and TV deals are set in stone with metropolitan New York. He may help a little bit with road-game attendance, but no one has done the actual math or the calculations. The New York Yankees may spend the $30 million they would have paid this underachiever for some serious pitching prospects.
A-Rod could have easily waited for the World Series to end before announcing his gutless decision. Gutless or not, it his decision to make, but the timing lacked class and grace. Not to mention not showing up in Denver for Game 4 to receive the Henry Aaron award for being the American League's most productive offensive player. Prince Fielder of the National League's Milwaukee Brewers graciously accepted the Henry Aaron award. A-Rod claims to have had a family commitment. Short of a death in the family, he should have been there. But the gutless one might have had to answer a few legitimate questions from the media.
The Yankees have no interest in talking to this crybaby. The Yankees made a good-faith effort to sit down and renegotiate. A-Rod claimed he was leaving because of uncertainty with the new manager and if certain key players would stay or check out free-agency options. This is where a Derek Jeter pulls up his boot straps and works even harder. With a new manager and some newer teammates, Jeter will teach them by example what it means to be a Yankee -- and I am a Red Sox/Cleveland Indians fan!!
Hopefully, no serious team will pony up what this baby wants, which is rumored to be $30 million per year for up to 10 more years. The Dodgers, Cubs, Giants, Mets and God-forbid, even the Red Sox, could afford this price tag. Why do it? In four years of truly huge numbers, the Yankees have sat home late October only to watch some other team -- with chemistry -- win the World Series.
A-Rod, grow up. Apologize to the Rockies and the Red Sox like a man. Then apologize to the immortal Henry Aaron for snubbing his award. You may break Barry Bonds' somewhat tainted home run record, but you know what? Who cares...
Georges Yared, CIO of Yared Investment Research, was recently taken off suicide watch after the Cleveland Indians collapse after being up on Boston 3 games to 1!!!

I don't know all the local poop on Alex Rodrigues other than he's a lot of veneer: superficially flashy but no substance.
I don't, however, blame A-Rod for the timing of his decision [I doubt he's actually that media-savvy although his agent could be]. I blame, 100%, the TV broadcasters for wasting valuable airtime during the Red Sox-Rockies World Series game. It was rude and disrespectful to the World Series participants as well as all baseball fans glued to their TV sets. It would appear that those behind the camera have incredibly short attention spans as well as no manners and an inability to distinguish between a real news/sports story and a local NYC publicity stunt.
The broadcasters treated the announcement as if it was world-shattering breaking news then proceded to dissect this so-called "news" for a mind-numbing lengthy time. If this utterly boring time-waster was during a rain delay, well, OK but right in the middle of potentially the fourth and [potentially] last game of the 2007 season! Give me a break!
Speaking of the TV coverage of the World Series, I thought it was of poor-medium quality. Lots of useless obsecure statistics, less than colorful game analysis and cliche-riddled commentary. Announcers sounded bored to death; one felt they'd draw the "short" straw and got stuck doing the broadcast. Are those announcers afflicted with A.D.D? They seemed to have had trouble focusing on what was happening right in front of them vs what was "coming up".
On the positive side, at least the World Series coverage included the singing of the National Anthem and the announcers were actually quiet. During the NLCS and ALCS playoffs, the announcers talked right over the Anthem. In fact, the opening ceremonies weren't even shown; shamefully disrespecful.

Another ungrateful sponsored immigrant. The Yankees should have left him where they found him. For the sake of baseball I, too, hope no team is dumb enough to pay this garbage what he is asking for. Who cares what his record is. He's still a nobody in comparison to many other great and LOYAL players.
