AMR Corporation (NYSE: AMR), better known as American Airlines, recently announced that it will begin to "test new food for sale options," including $3 CLIF Bars, $3 Vitamin Waters, and a $5 turkey sandwich. The Consumerist points out that, for those of you who have been living under rocks, that's a little expensive: "No offense, but according to internet grocer FreshDirect, we can have a Chocolate Brownie Energy CLIF Bar thing delivered to our house right now for $1.50. Just saying." and goes on to say that "Yes, perhaps we are cheap, but if we're going to pay $10 for cheese it won't be because we were extorted on an airplane."
Should consumers be upset about this? Absolutely not! We should be happy. If you think it's a rip-off, don't buy it! I sure as hell won't, and I doubt that the quality of my travel experience will be affected.
And for the morons who do shell out $3 for Vitamin Water: Your contributions to American Airlines' coffers are helping make airfare cheaper for the rest of us. The more dumb, overpriced crap that airlines can sell, the cheaper airfare will be. Perhaps they should try hawking shares of Overstock.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: OSTK).

For those of you who think flight Attendants are unnecessary, you better pray that you don't have to see us perform our real jobs. You have a heart attack on the plane, who do you think is going to try and save your life? An emergency evacuation without people who know how to perform one in less than a minutes time would be disatrous. These things don't happen everyday but they do happen. I'd hate to see how the general public would react if left to their own ignorant devices.

I bet half the people complaining about the cost of a $2 soda are the same goofs who will sit at a concourse bar an hour before their flight and spend at least $8 for a bBoody Mary or $6 for a beer... and they probably don't drink just one! Learn to pack a lunch.. if you travel long distance by car and want something to eat, do you stop at McD's or some other fast food joint? Hmm probably so- and how much do you spend? I bet it's more than $5 for a meal! Since the price of gas has gone up and we are paying so much for it especially on a long trip/drive- by your thinking, the gas stations should be paying for a complimentary snack for the road! Time to get real- times have changed.

Airlines are discontinuing food service to save money and space. The food served (except in 1st class) was awful anyway. But American Airlines responded as only they would -- charge the suckers for what we would give them for free.
I haven't flown AA for many years because they have the surliest flight crews, the lousiest on-time record, and their planes are filthy (and getting older by the hour).
Jet Blue found the answer to keeping customers. They don't serve food, but they come around acouple of times with snack such as blue corn chips (to match the line's color scheme) and cookies and other flling and quick snack items. The reason for it was to make the aisles narrower and seats wider since they wouldn't have to ush the food carts up and down running over people's feet etc. This made the crew more relaxes and the wider passengers happier. It also allowed them to take a row of seats out where the galley used to take up space and to then offer more legroom between the seats. And the encourage passngeres to bring their own food aboard and give out free water and soda and sell drinks a=t the usual airline prices.
Hey all you want a plane to do is take-off and land safely and on time and to be treated by the crew courteously as if you were paying their salaries. As I said, the food was lousy anyway and we bring peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from home to fill us up ad keep lour energy going.

I am also sick and tired of the airlines' policies to help avoid terrorist attacks. Taking a little kid's sippy cup away is not going to stop any kind of terrorist attack. It will however force the mom to spend the few dollars on the kid's drink on the plane.

For those of you who think flight attendants are unnecessary I'd like to ask who do you think is going to try and save your life when you have a heart attack on the plane? Who do you think is going to evacuate your ignorant tush when something (other than crashing and burning) goes wrong? I'd love to see the general public left to their own devices but it's my job to see you all land safely and in one piece. If your too stupid to take care of yourself when it comes to eating that is not my problem.

Have to agree with #6. When the meals were cut on several flights it was to save money...well it did not drop ticket prices, if anything they went up. I take my snack in my purse, with things as they are now, I do have to buy the bottle of water as I don't like the taste of airplane water. It is the price of doing business I guess...

The airlines are in the transportation business. They are not in the food service business. Either find a way to take a couple of small snacks with you, depending on the length of the flight or go without. That is one way we gals get over, big purses that we can put blue ice pack in and our snacks.

miki -you are an ignorant putz! Ask for a survivor of an aircraft accident to post whether they think flight attendants are necessary! Or the woman about the attendant who gave her husband CPR for 40 min.after his heart attack and then tried to console the family for the next 3 hrs. I was on that overseas flight a few years ago! She also made arrangements for a Chaplin to meet the family at the gate and have the body discreetly removed.
These people work at all hours of the day and night doing MINOR things like this as well as serve you cookies and tea. Would you do this for 30-40k a year? I think not!!

As far as i know you can still bring your own food and snacks on board airplanes. The non alcoholic beverages are usually still free. Unless you are a business traveler or someone who jumps on a plane at a moments notice you know way ahead of time when you are going to fly somewhere. Plan ahead people. Research whether your flight will be serving free food or not, and bring something with you. Not rocket science here.

IS this not the most UN-intelligent remark of the day! This idiot has no clue what a flight attendant is called much less what their duties are.... HINT hint, ignorant "dapper dan" it's not to serve food. Maybe you should increase your IQ and figure out their duties then post your stupid comments this eould keep you from looking like a moron, 80 IQ person. LOL
9. One way airlines could save some money, is get rid of the stewardess. They aren't needed many more. The don't have to serve food so what good are they anyhow....let the engineer or co-pilot make sure things are ready before they takeoff. If you can sit in a car for 3 hours without stopping you can be sure you can do the same thing in a airplane.

Miki,
Maybe you should check with these survivors from this link! The ones that lived were pulled from a burning plane and the flight attendants name was Robin Fetch.

83. I keep hearing that flight attendants are not "glorified waiters" etc. but are trained to get passengers off burning aircraft wrecks. Really? Then tell me when the last burning aircraft held any survivors that could be helped off the burning wreckage? Oh, and were the attendants still alive to help them off? Give me a break! They are ignorant and have attitude problems and are overpaid to boot! Anyone concur?

The last time I traveled by plane, the airline booked me on two flights to get to the destination. With the rampant delays that occur, the length of time between connecting flights is often only just enough to sprint from one to the other. I really resent the fact that I can't bring food with me from home, nor buy something and eat it without feeling like I have to choke it down or eat it in front of a seatmate. Airline travel is nothing more than being on a cattle train. There's no room, no food, no rest, no comforts, and no guarantee that we can get to the destination safely or in a timely fashion. Food is the least of our worries, but would certainly make the trips more tolerable.

Dapper Dan isn't so dapper, or smart. "Stewardesses" are only there to serve you food? Wow, welcome to the 2000s dude.
Try getting your facts straight before making ignorant comments. Try looking up FAA requirements for the minimum number of fa's on board an a/c and what their required safety duties are.

Larry, just goes to show that you can't even reply without namecalling and generalizing. Please learn to spell. It's chaplain, not Chaplin, as in Charlie. Or did you actually mean Charlie Chaplin or a relative of his? LOL! " ask a survivor".Larry, you make it sound as if there are several on every flight. If the attendant knew what they were doing, maybe the CPR might have worked. Are you sure they were performing it correctly, Larry? Big deal as for making "discrete arrangements", how difficult can that be? Considering how often this may happen in a career, that is. So, for serving cookies and getting the free fly perks, not bad for 40K per year. I might add Larry, don't assume what I would or would not do as a career. You don't know me. Don't presume to know how I would live my life.

Once and for all....airlines are in the transportation business and not the food business. Anyone that can't last 3 or 4 hours without a meal has a real problem. I am a diabetic and I need to eat on a schedule. I carry the necessary snacks with me, things that will pass the TSA inspection, or is it my attitude that passes?

The easiest way to avoid those nasty overpriced snacks on airplanes is to just say "no" to them and bring your own. It isn't that difficult to buy something at the grocery store the day before or make something yourself. The flight attendants don't want to serve any food anyway. And why should they? They have had their salaries cut, their pensions reduced or eliminated, and their hours increased. Some have even told me they are forced to fly when they are sick, since their sick time has been drastically reduced. All those things do not make for a happy employee. Some would say they are lucky just to have a job. Not so, they are trained professionals and deserve to be treated better by the airlines. So bring your own snacks and drinks and they won't have to bother with them. And has anyone noticed how filthy dirty the planes are becoming. No cleaning during turn arounds. Some flight attendants are now wearing disposable gloves while doing their job to protect themselves from unwanted germs. Airlines have become "flying Greyhound Busses" with service and passengers to match.
