Circuit City (NYSE: CC) said Monday that it will be giving away 30 Mazda cars along with other prizes in a new "Drive to 65" marketing promotion in partnership with Mazda. At the doorstep of the new promotion will be a Mazda CX-9 crossover vehicle.Circuit City is obviously trying to get on the holiday bandwagon in a big way, and this promotion is a great attempt at revival from the nation's second-largest independent consumer electronics retailer. Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) are both trying to beat Circuit City into the ground, and if the last few quarters from the company are any indication, its larger competitors are succeeding.
"Drive to 65" is actually in reference to Circuit City's opening of 65 new stores this year, and the company will be giving away a free car every day through December 3. I'm not sure what Circuit City is paying Mazda for this promotion, but it's a gamble that will probably pay off in getting Circuit City in customers' collective holiday shopping minds. In addition to cars, standard electronics items like iPods, speakers, cameras and GPS units will be given away in the collection of more than 100 prizes included in this promotion.
Will this drive more business to the nation's No. 2 consumer electronics retailer? The accountants responsible for approving the check to Mazda probably have a few spreadsheets that show break-even points for the holiday shopping season as it relates to this giveaway, and with two larger competitors at its throat, Circuit City needs all the help it can get to boost this quarter's results. But regardless of how profitable this is to the retailer, there will be 30 happy new car owners come the first of December, natch.

If there are no strings attached I think it's great. I guess they saved enough money from not sending people their rebates to give away a lot of cars. I won't even step inside a Circuit City store again. Their paperwork for a $240 rebate was so complicated, I went to the store twice and asked for help, first they said call this 800 number, led no where, second time they were no help at all, no one, not even the manager would help. I've never had a problem getting a rebate from any store or manufacturer before. I'm out $240, I could have bought the same computer at Best Buy and saved close to $240 even though it wasn't on sale. Circuit City is a rip off. Hope the cars have motors.

Circuit City probably saved enough money to buy these Mazadas by not honoring their warrenties on their computers. $250.00 wasted. They have lost my business for sure.

Circut City is a joke. Will never step foot into another store again. They refused to take back a tivo box after they lied and gave false info to sell it in the first place. I hope Best Buy and Wal Mart put them out of buisness. That will be a Happy Day. :)

I guess they can afford this since they outsoursed most of the jobs held by their warehouse employees who had to take huge pay cuts.

Circuit City sucks!! They are more expensive than Best Buy and they employ jackasses. We went to buy a Game Cube and 4 games when the system was brand new and the cashier insisted we give her a phone # on a cash purchase. When we told her that we didn't have a phone (just to see what she would say) she said she couldn't complete our purchase without one. WTF!! Since when do you have to have a phone to buy something? I suppose we could have given her our # or made up any old ph# but her attitude and request sucked so we just left and, needless to say, we took our business elsewhere and have never gone back to a Circuit City since.

I've never been to Circuit City, but as far as I am concerned Best Buy is NO better. I bought a Gateway laptop (spent $900) and only had it for a DAY and a half and it would shut itself down after and hour er so and it also would not hold an internet connection. I wanted to exchange for a different one and they told me I need to send it back to Gateway for repair. After much fuss they finally agreed to give me a new one, I mean, I only had this $1000 item for basically a DAY. After having THAT one for a month it too would not hold its internet connection and I was told by Gateway to take it to Best Buy and they would send it back to Gateway for me to be repaired. When I took it to Best Buy they were NOT cooperative in the least and proceeded to tell me that they did not provide shipping services and that I would need to take it to UPS or somewhere else. When I told them that I had already spoke to Gateway and was told since I had bought it at Best Buy that they would send it back FOR me, he went off to discuss it with someone and came back with a shipping box and told me they would do it this time but any future problems would have to be taken care of by me. So I really dont think it is just Circuit City...its the greed of these chains and many others only wanting our money and nothing more!!

Poster number 1 you are soooo right!! The same thing happened to me from a computer I bought last Christmas. Except on my end after filling out rebate forms for all pieces they sent me a $50.00 dollar rebate and said that was all that applied. My wife spent hours on the phone getting the runaround from third parties and we decided it was in our case a $230.00 lesson whay not to buy from Circuit City. Just wish we had found it out earlier as we spent over 5k there last year. Their in house extended service plan sucks too. We have had 3 issues so far on that. To the point that we had to buy 3 mp3 players to replace one given as a gift last Christmas. Hey, I wonder if a class action suit is in order for the rebate stuff?

Davon-The reason stores ask for your phone number is so they can track your purchase history. Some are even known to offer rebates, free stuff , or "special engagements" to customers who often shop at a particular location. (addresses can be found with phone numbers.) The thought behind it is to simply keep you going back to that store....just like grocery stores have "club cards" and gas stations have gas cards. Just to keep you going back to the same place. cheap marketing.

Circuit City is a rip off you pay off your bill and then they come after you 12 yrs later saying you owe them the money and by then you can't prove it because everyone from the bank you wrote the check on to your own records have been erased and thrown away. Then they ruin your credit by saying you are delinquent on your account or default. Since when is this the right way to do business.....?? I refuse to pay them again for something I already paid for years prior. Get a life Circuit City. Or hire someone who can keep proper paperwork.

I think Best Buy does a better job. It is a more comforting environment to shop in. In my experience living in multiple states, most Circuit City stores are dark and have unpleasant employees. Best Buy must pay their people better because I have not met a mean one yet. If Circuit City wants to survive, they need to study the things Best Buy does right: bright cheery stores, easy store layout, helpful employees, greeting people at the door, employees present to help customers, customer loyalty rewards, easy rebates, easy returns, and easy warranty service.

Just by reading the comments I will NEVER go to Circuit City and even purchase a paperclip. I believe in the public opinion. Thanks everyone for the heads up. Keep passing the word about these guys. We work hard for our money and don't need these kind of headaches and morons selling us product that we work hard for.

Yikes! I'm sitting here reading this on the laptop we bought last December from Circuit City, thinking about the extended warranty we purchased with it and remembering how I got a card from Circuit City stating that because of info received from the store we would not be receiving our rebate. I made one phone call to their 800 number and the rebate was received about two weeks later. My husband figured that they sent those cards out automatically because they figure a certain percentage of people would not follow up on it. Buyer Beware!!

too bad for the city-but customer service is what counts. which brings to my mind, why the hell wal-mart is still going. have never had good service there and last trip had me standing in customer service for an hour because a cashier messed up and double charged my card. wont see me there anymore. i love best buy-for sure

Reading these comments only adds to my frustration with Circuit City. I took my computer which worked perfectly fine for an easy upgrade with a new video card, memory and an upgraded power supply. They managed to blow up my computer or as the employee said "the motherboard started smoking". I get in return the cheapest computer they have minus the power supply, and a video card that still doesn't work. I have to buy a new printer since it's not compatible and have lost hundreds of dollars. I call corporate and they offer a $100.00 gift card. Best Buy is opening soon right next to them, I think I'll get a shirt printed Circuit City is a joke..Shop at Best Buy and walk around the store! They make me sick!

Dont like shopping at any of them, especially Circuit City. Watched as my Job got outsoursed
the "offered" to move me to New Jersey so I could now work in the warehouse instead of what I was doing, That job went to Virgina. If I have to I go to walmart or (last resort ) BB I really prefer
small local shops which if you look hard enough you will find them.

Sandy,
Check your state laws. Most states have a statute of limitations on a debt of 4-6 years. Do a little legwork on the computer, check your state laws and then send a letter explaining that the bill was paid 12 years ago and since (I'm sure) the limitations are expired for your state, you owe nothing. If they press the issue, contact the Federal Trade Commisson and file a complaint. All this can be found on the computer with a little work. Be prepaired and have your "T's" crossed and your "I's" dotted and you'll be fine.
