Circuit City (NYSE: CC) said Monday that it will be giving away 30 Mazda cars along with other prizes in a new "Drive to 65" marketing promotion in partnership with Mazda. At the doorstep of the new promotion will be a Mazda CX-9 crossover vehicle.Circuit City is obviously trying to get on the holiday bandwagon in a big way, and this promotion is a great attempt at revival from the nation's second-largest independent consumer electronics retailer. Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) are both trying to beat Circuit City into the ground, and if the last few quarters from the company are any indication, its larger competitors are succeeding.
"Drive to 65" is actually in reference to Circuit City's opening of 65 new stores this year, and the company will be giving away a free car every day through December 3. I'm not sure what Circuit City is paying Mazda for this promotion, but it's a gamble that will probably pay off in getting Circuit City in customers' collective holiday shopping minds. In addition to cars, standard electronics items like iPods, speakers, cameras and GPS units will be given away in the collection of more than 100 prizes included in this promotion.
Will this drive more business to the nation's No. 2 consumer electronics retailer? The accountants responsible for approving the check to Mazda probably have a few spreadsheets that show break-even points for the holiday shopping season as it relates to this giveaway, and with two larger competitors at its throat, Circuit City needs all the help it can get to boost this quarter's results. But regardless of how profitable this is to the retailer, there will be 30 happy new car owners come the first of December, natch.

I feel for everyone who has been "scammed" by large retail corporations. I, unfortunately, work for one and am in constant awe at the tactis they will use to lure customers into their lairs. Black Friday sales are some of the worst. They advertise large discounts on items and then only stock a few of that item. The main ideal is make money any way you can, period. You and all other customers are just pawns in a large competitive chess game. Sorry retailers, checkmate! I win! I refuse to buy from any of you. I take my business to small locally owned and operated businesses. Lets all remember that these small businesses are what created the economy in our country in the first place and take our business back to them. And, Happy Holidays to you all!

Mr. Schoonover: I know Circuit City is having problems and they are about to turn me off. I have purchased items at Circuit City, e.g., a Nikon digital camera, and all has been fine. So, I entered this Drive to 65 contest based on the ad in the Nov. 11 Sun. paper. First, the contact CC web site on pg. 4 was misspelled. Then, to complete an on-line entry was very complicated, requiring one to negotiate 4 or 5 different web pages. I never knew if my entry made it in. I tried to enter the next day and was told, incorrectly, that I had already entered that day. This has happened twice more since then.
This is just on-line/marketing incompetence. Schoonover should have a talk with Weedfald & McCorey.

And if you did the Amp'd Mobile Phone rebate a year ago...and you called CC in March, April, May, June, July...to complain (they gave me tracking numbers on my complaints)...to finally tell me that so sorry that Amp'd went chapter 11 in August...and it was a manufacturers rebate...and there is nothing that they could do...I told them they had the rebate in their ads (on line, in stores and in newspapers)...and it was a condition of the sale, they did.
The rep told me to sue them...I am taking his advice and getting a class action suit started with a national firm. Watch for a class action suit and those CC shares will go down more...they have a pattern of not paying rebates, on line, in stores or manufacturer rebates!
bye bye CC

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING from CC that has a manufacturers rebate...they will not back up the rebate, that they are promoting. So if the ad says your net is X after rebate, do not count on it...what you pay at the register is your net cost!
If you bought an Amp'd phone from them with the $100 CASH rebate or a $100 credit card gift rebate...and you waited for over 9 months like me, and you complained to CC over months and they did nothing...oh, and Young America had a hand in this thing too...watch for my class action suit against CC and Young America. You will not get any money from the chapter 11 amp'd liquidation as there is no money there.
Watch for news, and I am sure that the discovery will find all the names of the people that are owed money by CC...and also they way they handle all rebates will be changed after my suit!
Long live BB and the independents...and to all a good night!

I bought a 65" Toshiba big screen TV with Cash, cashier asked my phone # and ASSURED me my name was not going to sold - NOR DO I WANT THE WARRANTY!! Do you know Circuit City called me EVERYDAY atleast 3 times a day, although I did not answer the phone. One of their people FINALLY left a Nasty message stating he has been trying to reach me, WHY won't I answer the phone??
I ended up having to email Corporate and threaten harrassment with them before they left me be. By the way - this went on for 6 MONTHS!!!!!!

Sigh this person posting the kimkins links is trying to pawn off their affiliate link for a fraudulent and dangerous very low calorie diet scam.
Very low calorie diets should only be done under medical supervision for obese people whom meet specific criteria and only for a short timeprovided essential nutrients are met. This diet is none of the above hence it's dangerous potential, you have people living off of water or diet drinks alone in their desperation to lose weight fast. Rapid weight loss on it's own carries a lot of risks and needs to be monitored closely.
This diet has made lots of people sick especially with their mental views towards food where these people end up afraid to eat, whats worse is that it has been heavily marketed to teenagers as well. On their forum they had a 14 year old girl struggling to eat only 500 calories per day, she wasn't even over weight!
She lied about her own weight by basing this diet around her own alleged success when she is indeed obese. She also put up a bunch of success stories which turned out to be almost all fake with photos stolen from a Russian bride website.
She made 1.2 million in one month alone from taking advantage of people desperate to lose weight.
This scam called kimkins has made it to national TV across three different channels and she has already had to go into court for a deposition for the lawsuit with snippets aired on TV. You will find a link to the kimkins deposition here amongst links to other articles by others on this controversy:

Ok Sandy first of all Chase bank is our credit company so its not us, deal with them, and for the rest of people talking bad about circuit city you cant blame one bad experience on the whole company i mean come on people, you cant base your opinion on what people think about a company and how ONE frickin employee treated you. GET OVER IT i have worked for circuit city for 2 years now and i love it, people have their own personalities we dont hire assholes people change when they are interviewed. I must say we are 10 times better then best buy because we at least try to help our customers instead of making them wait 45 minutes for someone to help them. I think best buy is OK but when it comes to customer service THEY SUCK!!!!
All i am saying is give circuit city a chance and dont base your one bad experience on whether or not your going to shop with us because if thats the case you would have nowhere to shop. So Grow up and get over yourself and if you think its that bad YOU try working retail and dealing with jerks like yourself THEN we will see what your opinion is.
