According to The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), "Mr. Grassley said his investigation was prompted by complaints from watchdog groups and others that the ministers live in multimillion-dollar homes, travel on private jets and engage in profit-making ventures from their ministries. He said the complaints raised suspicions, "but I would not make a final judgment until I get the story from the ministries."
Among the ministries that Grassley is seeking investigation from are faith-healer Benny Hinn, Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer, and Kenneth Copeland.
Hinn may be the least defensible. According to an interview with Florida Magazine in 1991, Hinn replied to a question about his ostentatious display of wealth this way: "What's the big deal, for goodness sake? What am I supposed to do, drive a Honda? ...That's not in the Bible. ... I'm sick and tired about hearing about streets of gold in heaven. I don't need gold in heaven. I got to have it now!"
For an in-depth profile of Mr. Hinn, check out this article from D Magazine.
But having watched a few of these late night ministrimercials, I wonder if the SEC should be taking a look to. Many of these ministers who preach the prosperity doctrine urge viewers to send in money, and promise that they will be rewarded. According to the Associated Baptist Press, "The most manipulative TV evangelists present a simple formula as well, saying God will multiply and return to the giver whatever amount is given to a particular ministry."
Isn't that kind of like selling an unregistered security? Is there any material difference between that and a boiler room broker telling someone an obscure penny stock is going "to da moon"?
In 1982, the Supreme Court stated in Marine Bank v. Weaver, 455 U.S. 551, that a security could be a stock, bond, option, etc., "along with the countless and variable schemes devised by those who seek the use of the money of others on the promise of profits."
Based on that, a strong a case could be made that some of these televangelists really are selling a security when they ask viewers to "plant a seed of faith".
And if these donors (I would argue they're really investors, if they're sending money based on the promise of a return -- Isn't that what an investor is?) don't receive the promised "return", are they victims of investment fraud?
I'd like to see the SEC take a look at some of these infomercials -- It might be a new way to crack down on these charlatans who prey on desperate people.

The Fair Tax would give power back to the American People and close many loopholes like this.
On payday you would get your full paycheck. No witholding. No tax forms to fool with.
The polititions are afraid of this and lie about it because they don't want to lose power. Since its inception they have used the income tax to get money and votes from special interests.

What hasn't caught up with them yet is how they are raping the taxpayers by sucking up faith-based funding and school vouchers to spread their empires. The taxpayers better wake up and end these programs. Christian extremists and radical Islamists are being funded by taxpayers. And since the Supreme Court rules the Salvation Army can hire and fire based on belief for workers to distribute faith-based funding, this means that religious organizations of all kinds can refuse to hire those of other religions, women, gays, or whomever they wish. This is definitely un-American and needs to stop now before it goes any further. These people are self-serving thieves using religion as a front.

Churches should be tax exempt, but should also spend their "fortunes" as the bible teaches.
Preachers, and other paid employees, should be taxed just as everyone else is.
Fair is fair. (I think we should also look at governmental officials, city and up, who use too many loopholes for their own purposes.)

I don't believe that the church employees saleries are tax exempt. They must pay income taxes. SS
ect. The church entity is tax exempt and so does not pay corporate or income tax. I certainly do feel that most of these jokers on tv are crooks and some oversight is needed.

I find it ridiculous that most commenters just believe anything they read or watch instead of doing a little research for themselves. How small minded can you be to let yourself be spoon feed by the media and just take it all in with out waking up and realizing that their are two sides to every story. The media says that all 6 of the ministries listed are all board members of ORU, but that is not true...Joyce Meyer is not a member of ORU's board at all. If you would like to see what Joyce Meyer Ministries does do with their money, then you should check out this video embedded in the link at the end of this comment....unless your small mind won't allow you to be open minded and see the other side that the media won't show you. Z PUBLISHING 10-YEAR SURVIVAL OF CENSORSHIP (1997-2007)
Peace be unto you,
We thank God for the survival of Z Publishing for over ten years. But to the trepidation of those oppossed to Free Speech we continue to publish, write, mediate and think. Brethren we come with peace upon our hearts thanking God for the presence of the Wind the Rain and all of the grand Creation. With this in mind we have come to also look upon humankind and the landscape that Almighty God created.
While many thought that since the great lapse in the time of our first book “Big Ralph: Reflections of a Black Police Chief,” in 1997 and our latest book “The Cry of Humanity,” September 2006, we had shut down. However we have not forsaken God and given up even in the wake of so much opposition, ignorance and confusion.
Therefore, we come to report that as Almighty God leads us we are still alive. We have now added the ability to buy our books by credit card and Pay Pal on our Web Site. At our Order Page also please make donations to our Writing and Teaching Ministry. Also look for the following additions to our Web Pages and our growing list of new titles.
UPCOMING NEW TITLES FROM PSYCHE Z PUBLISHING
We are very excited about our new Book of Essays due to be available before the Christmas Holidays. “Fallen Letters,” Mis-Education and Intellectual Confusion (Essays On The Black Experience) is a unique collection of essays. These essays reveal many untold facts about the struggles of Black people in America and throughout the Diaspora. Intellectuals and those that have a thirst for information and knowledge will treasure these essays as they give additional information on some of the most prominent questions and concerns confronted by Black people over time.
Brethren we thank God for the inspiration to offer our Biblical Epistles as free downloads. The first Book of Epistles will be offered also before the Christmas Holidays. “The Tithe Forsakes Christ,” (Epistles On What The Bible Teaches About Tithes and Offerings). The church (as is the world) is consumed with things material. However our God is a heart God. For those that believe in God, Christ and the Bible read what God really teaches about giving. May God bless you?
We hope to add to our free download list with our extensive collection of Epistles on “Cremation and the Spirit.” Here we have done an exhaustive study of the Bible regarding the burning of the dead as a way to dispose the body at death. However we have found that this practice is a capital sin. Thus we conclude that Cremation is sin and eternal death. Those that believe in the Bible and Christ we again note that you forsake Christ and the resurrection if you burn your body at death.
Also hopefully in time for Black History Month are very soon after we will release “King Cobra: The Saga of the Black General.” This book is an exciting historical novel that has a time span of 1800-1880. It offers a vivid look at the time before, during and after the Civil War. King Cobra is mostly likely one of the most important and eventful books we have produced. CPC, Productions Catherine Patton Cothran is proud to offer this up-coming addition to our titles in early 2008.

Its long overdue for an investigation of these phoney, crying, holier than thou, jewerly wearing clowns!
Whats even more pathetic than watching them, is thinking how stupid our society is to actually open our wallets and give to these people. Just watch one of their "shows", compare the the way the televangelist are dressed, and their jewerly as opposed to that of their audience. And I am sure the clothes the audience has on is their very best.
Its sad, its frustrating, and its angering. Shut them down Senator Grassley! And I hope these 6 are only the beginning! I support you Sir.

BLACK PREACHER: SHAME OF THE MINISTRY
PART 2: RESPONSE TO THE LETTER SENT TO MINISTER HAROLD K. “TINY” LESTER AND CHURCH OFFICERS MAY 31, 2006.
Beloved peace be unto you. As of 28 June 2006 Minister Harold K. “Tiny” Lester and his church officers at Orchard Knob MBC in Chattanooga, TN have failed to render a written response to our previous and initial correspondence. However they have responded verbally in the following manner.
As of 25 June 2006 Sunday the leading Minister Harold K “Tiny”. Lester noted to Ms. Catherine Patton Cothran that she needs to apologize for the letter noted by this writer on May 31, 2006. For the record the letter was written by Carl A. Patton and not Ms. Cothran. Meanwhile Sister Cothran was removed from teaching Sunday School and will relinquish any other duties as forthcoming.
Minster Harold K. “TINY” Lester and all of the officers that received a copy of the letter are confused. They should be apologizing to Sister Cothran. They withheld her property and insulted her. Do Ministers like Harold K. “Tiny” Lester and his church officers think they are above the law? Just how many criminals are members of Orchard Knob MBC? Does Harold K. “Tiny” Lester thrive on the company of criminals and those that break the many laws of this country. Have Harold and his partners in crime committed any crimes in concert?
Therefore, Brethren we feel for certain that Harold K. “Tiny” Lester and the church officers should be apologizing to Sister Cothran and Psyche Publishing for holding our property for two years.
Well this is what Free Expression is all about. This is why we have Blogs on the internet to rant and rave and air grievances especially among those that have very little resources to call in account lawyers and courtrooms. However there are other rooms.
Will the Saints of God stand against the tyranny of Preachers like Harold K. “Tiny” Lester?
Peace and Love,
Carl Patton, FreedomJournal, 28 June 2006 in the year of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

PART 3: WHAT IS THE CALL TO CHRIST FOR PREACHERS?
In the name of God, Master of the universe, Ruler of the earth.
Editors Note: These articles are taken from a previously written series on the Black Preacher.
Greetings Brethren,
Peace be unto you. The absence of obedience to God by many Preachers logically leads us to question the Calling of many Preachers. This disobedience is further revealed in the failure of many Preachers to use the Bible as the written Laws of God. However, what do we mean by Call? Generally the Call to the Ministry is reflected in a person declaring that God has Called them to Preach. Thus, they take on the title Preacher/Minister. Some seek to be ordained and Pastor a church. Some also seek to study theology. Also does the Call to the Ministry mean that Preachers will be Godly?
Meanwhile many people (men and women) who answer the Call do very little. Also, many of those Called to Preach have very little knowledge about the Word and do not try to learn anything. Therefore many Preachers that claim God has called them to Preach do not realize that the Bible is their guide and source for information about Christianity and the church. The Bible also tells those Called what their responsibilities are. Therefore the Bible records what all Call Preachers must do and what God will do to them if they forsake God. For the record does the ill- prepared Preacher actually know how important the Mission of a Minister is? We use the word Mission because we denote "a job" as a means to earn money. However, the Mission of a Minister is to save souls. Thus, saving souls is the priority and not making money. The Ministry is not a place to get rich. Rich Preachers need to beware if their riches came from the people and the Collection Plate.
Meanwhile we argue that God did not Call Preachers to get rich. So what does the Bible say about Call. There are several meanings for the Word Call in the Bible. In Jeremiah 33:3 "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, is noted as a Call to prayer. In the first chapter of Jeremiah we see God calling Jeremiah. Thus we see Call as a means to summon or appoint. In the Book of Genesis 1:5 we see: "And God called the light day." The fourth meaning for Call is related as the Call to invite men to accept salvation through Christ. This is a Call by God through the Holy Spirit. The Scripture references are Hebrews 3: 1, II Timothy 1:9 and I Corinthians 1:26 and 7:20.
As we continue to define the components of Call we argue that we can see a Call to the Ministry in two areas. God can appoint one to a special task. Also, one can be called to accept Jesus Christ. However what comes first, the Call to accept Christ or the Call to a special task? But, before we determine the chronology of the Call, we will define Preacher/Minister.
The definitive qualities of Preacher/Minister are found in the words of Bishop, Elder, Minister and the Pastoral Epistles. Bishops were originally the principal officers of the local church, the other being the Deacon or Deacons. (See I Timothy 3:1-7).
The title Elder generally applied to the same man, Elder referring to his age and dignity, and Bishop to his work of superintendence. As the church grew, the Bishop of a large church would often be given a special honor. Eventually a hierarchy grew from presiding Elders to Bishops over groups of churches, then to Archbishops.
Meanwhile, in ancient times the older men of a community were known as Elders. Elders governed the community and made all major decisions. After the return from exile the Elders made up the Sanhedrin, the governing Council of the Jews. When the Christian churches were established, Elders were appointed for each congregation. (See Acts 14:23). By the time of the New Testament we see the terms Elders and Bishops being used interchangeably. With the establishment of the churches their duties involved the spiritual oversight of the congregation and teaching the Word. However before the first century A.D. had elapsed, the term Bishop had taken on a special meaning, denoting the one leader of the church.
The transition and development of Minister like Bishop and Elder is seen in the Old Testament to the New Testament. Ministers originally meant a servant, though distinguished from a slave who may work against his will, and a hireling, who works for wages. Joshua as a young man was Minister to Moses. (See Exodus 24:13).
In Jeremiah 33:21-22 God Calls the Priests of Israel His ministers and his usage of the word for priests or religious leaders have come over into the Christian church. The Christian Minister is not only a servant of God, but he should also make it his business to serve the local church to which he is attached.
The Pastoral Epistles are a common title for Timothy I and II and Titus. These letters reveal directions for Pastors; however they were not addressed to Pastors in the usual present day sense of the term. They addressed these letters to Paul's special envoy. Paul sent these special Missionaries on specific missions.
Thus the present day Preacher/Minister developed from the Elder, Bishop and Ministers in the original Christian church, thus the hierarchy of the church being Christ, Elder/Bishop/Minister and Deacons. The record also notes that the Elders and Bishops were men.
We now return to the point, what comes first, the Call to Christ or the Call to special duties? One has to know God before he can perform special duties. Thus we argue that the Call to Christ comes first.
Peace and Love, Carl Patton a willing slave of Almighty God writing for the FreedomJournal 24 June 2006 in the year of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

Snakes and Such – The haunting 1992 movie Unforgiven is another complex multilayered, parabolic story of the old West. It is set in the 1878 town of Big Whisky, which Isaiah 28:1-3 indicates is a state of being drunk on self to point of deification. So it is a place where the biggest, baddest self-exalter is on the throne. That would be today’s prosperity televangelists in the media mesmerizing business. But in the movie this person is Little Bill Daggett, played by the inestimable Gene Hackman. Daggett’s evil self is greater than English Bob, played by Richard Harris, whom he beats up. Daggett cannot build a house worth living in, which is bad news since God wants to live in our soul-house. Daggett’s job is to protect the town pimp and whores. But when two cowboys cut up a whore’s face, Daggett cannot oversee justice properly even as certain prosperity televangelists apparently cannot oversee justice properly at the Oral Roberts University. So the whores hire Will Munny, played by Clint Eastwood, to kill the two cowboys. Similarly, two fired professors hired lawyers to sue ORU for injustice. Munny appears on the surface to be as Little Bill. But Dagget is a braggart; Munny is self-effacing – giving credit for his reputation to whiskey. Dagget has outlawed guns. Guns, like swords, can represent truth and truth’s defense. Munny stands for truths. Daggett’s prosperity program includes overlooking abuse and taking advantage. Munny is principled and won’t take advantage. Daggett’s character shares many traits of prosperity preachers, while Munny is the reformed reformer. Munny is very much forgiven while Dagget is very much not. In fact, the whole story is driven to the inescapable conclusion that Dagget must die. The fake good can pretend to fight evil for only so long. The fake good content themselves with beating down lesser fake goods while winking at their own greater evil empires. Then comes God’s assassin who is on the money with whatever skill set is necessary and has the will to bust through the reality distortion fields. Perhaps pimps need to be more careful how they decorate their establishments. As Will Munny says, “Any man that don’t want to get killed, better clear on out the back.” And such men of the day show that God is the ultimate closer, finisher and terminator of snakes and such. (All this to be taken spiritually, not literally.) www.inthatdayteachings.com
