Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) instituted a new customer slogan this year: "Save Money. Live Better." Although it was intended to reinforce the retailer's position that it helps families in an age of increasing prices and general inflationary pressure, much of the public didn't get the memo, apparently.
Keep in mind that it's hard to completely trust anything by either the retailer or its watchdog groups like Wal-Mart Watch, the latter released a survey that concluded only 4% of people believe that Wal-Mart saves the average American family $2,500 annually. The same report says that customers may indeed be paying less, but Wal-Mart is not the only company that can help them pad those wallets and fill those purses.
Of course, Wal-Mart Watch says that the study that backs Wal-Mart's "$2,500" claim credits just the retailer's existence with saving the customer that much. Perhaps that's through pricing competition in the area and inflation control more than Wal-Mart customers specifically saving that much by shopping at Wal-Mart? That could certainly be inferred here.
Regardless, does the mere existence of Wal-Mart control the complete, surrounding retail ecosystem, causing prices to remain ultra-competitive? Probably so -- and Wal-Mart's "Save Money. Live Better" might just be a statement of fact rather than a corporate pitch. Either way, there's probably some good truth in there.

Just to let you know Target sells the same exact merchandise that Wal-Mart sells and many other retail companies. If we in the US fought hard enough to keep companies here instead of outsourcing to other countries, we would not have this problem. If you have problems with a certain store that you shop at speak to management, and give them ways that they could change to enhance your shopping experience.

In the summer of 2005 I traveled across country all summer and shopped ALOT of Wal-Marts and I have never had a rude employee. I know I have saved money at WM. I check the prices of things at all 4 places I shop and buy at the least expensive store. Wal-Mart gets about 70% of my food, clothes, car business because they charge less. AS for coming from China or somewhere else. Check the lables in the "better" stores. Same countries and if you look hard enough. Same companies. If you find yourself returning things all the time then try on the clothes first or read the directions. And as for helpful employees. They are there to help, not give your life meaning. If you shop at WM alot you should pretty well know about where everything is. That you may chose to be dumb as dirt and not bother to remember. Well, that is no ones problem but your own.

I shop wal-Mart quuite a bit. I think that people think they are saving money by buying the off brand or Wal-Mart brand when in reality those items are actually more than name brand. My 10 year old son took notice that I could buy 2 5 pond bags of sugar cheaper than buying a 10 pound bag of sugar. What does that say?

Your headline asks if Walmart really saves families $2500 a year? No where do you even make an attempt to answer the question. That would have been helpful. Maybe some comparative prices. You have accomplished nothing. You have improved the world not at all.

I don't know about saving $2,500/year per family because I only shop at Walmart for the things I need and know they're cheaper there - name brand items. I do know, however, that I paid $78 for two prescriptions last month and found that I could've gotten them filled at my local drug store for $54. These are ongoing meds so I know what my savings will be at my local drug store each month. I know there are $4 prescriptions at Walmart, but mine weren't on the list. On the other hand, I ordered a 'Dora the Explorer' 16" bicycle online for just under $60 which will be shipped to my local store (in the country) and they will assemble it for free, too.

Here's a little story for you w/m lovers...My wife accidentally bounce a check at w/m...the telecheck people w/m employs came after ME...when I asked for proof of the bounced check...they did not reply...simply sent me to our local states attorney for involvement in a bad check writing scheme...the check was for 25.16...since they refused to provide me proper proof this escalated without my knowledge...it cost me over 250.00 to clear my name and to return my account to good standing...these are the types of businesses Wally World employs at your cost...some savings.......bunch of damn crooks if you ask me.....pissed at walmart forever!!!

I avoid Wal-Mart like the plague! Kroger doubles and triples my coupons and I save just as much if not more. And I get a gas discount as well. I also don't have to dodge all the crap stacked in the ailses. Target's nongrocery prices are just as cheap and associates ask if you need any help finding anything. I have never had that happen in Wal-Mart. I look forward to the day that Wal-Mart goes belly up!!

155. I needed a set of tires at 7:30 pm saturday (emergency) Atlanta, Ga. Employee didnt want to talk to me. Finally he said, ' we dont carry your tires' (American car). Nuff said....
What was the emergency that you needed a SET of tires on a Sat nite at 7:30? You mean it wasn't an emergency at noon when all the employees were there? It became an emergency only when it was about time to close. Maybe he did not have the tires you wanted? Possibility? By the way. What does "American Car" mean when getting tires? I used to love it when people would come in my store at about 5 minutes to closing and want me to design a kitchen for them. They had the same dumb reaction when I said they would have to come back. Walmart's bottom line is how much profit can they make .period . I worked for Walmart for 14 months and believe me they show no respect for their employees . I worked for USPS for 36 years and had less problems with them in all that time than i did with Walmart . Their managers chew you out in front of customers and other employees in a heartbeat . I am a senior and a U.S.Army veteran and they showed me about as much respect as a dog during my time with them . I don't know why I put up with them for that long except I was trying to get my quarters in for social security perposes . I worked hard for their minimum wage job , and even that didn't matter .So when an Walmart employee seems rude they may not mean to be so , they may be mad at the way they are treated .

Do not buy gift cards anywhere from anyone except an original provider. There is no rational reason for anyone else to sell money online for a discount. That only leaves stolen, counterfeit, or expired cards with no recourse for refund from an invisable provider. There is no way to verify the card's value before money changes hands. Refunds from fraud insurance isn't much help when you have a cart full of stuff and the card doesn't work. Just tape the dead card to your forehead; "Here's your sign."

WalMart represents the challenge of America. We want everything cheaper and better. While doing that, we also want all the jobs to stay here. And we want products that are safe. At some point, we all have to realize that these cannot co-exist in the same products and must make decisions. I am responsible for making the choices that are best for my family and my expectations. To me, that means WalMart is a store of last resort. If I can find an item anywhere else, I buy it there. From the time I drive into the WalMart parking lot until I drive out, I feel that I am forsaking my values and the American worker. Good for America? I don't think so - and do you really save that much? How many of us buy items that were not on our list?

I used to say, never Wal-mart, only Target because Target gave back to the community and seemed to have a better quality of merchandise, however... Target's return policy has changed for the worse! And Target is now stocking much of the same products as Wal-mart, so if I could find a Wal-mart that isn't crowded with white trash customers and if it has employees who could actually speak a little English.... I'm there.

WalMart is the one of the worst things that have happened to America. They come in to town all over and put the little man out of business. People who have had their own businesses for years can not compete with them. All of the stuff they sell is crap. They used to be "We buy and sell American made" Now everything is made in China. So then how much money are you really saving when the cheap piece of crap you thought you were saving money on, breaks and you have to go and buy another one? Plus the fact that it has been proven that they are sexist. Women that have the same schooling, same experience, same title, will always make less money that their male counterparts. WALMART SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wal-Mart is a real combination of China and Mexico. There are very few things in that store that are not made in China, and their biggest customer base is Mexican. And their prices and quality are routinely beat by Costco.

I am with you Susan.. I was too proud to shop these "cheap" stores. Then one day I too I had to start watching my spending so I keep tabs of what I spent at my regular grocery store and what I spent for the same exact items at Wal-mart. I don't clothing shop there because most things are not up to my standards of quality, but there are alot of items that I have seen at Target, Macy's and the like, for a LOT less. And yes, the prices have gone up at Wal-Mart, but so have they at all the other stores... Every one is under the energy crunch! I shop a lot of different stores because I am an informed shopper, keep tab of who sells the best item at the best price and then arrange my driving pattern to use the least gas. We have become a me, me ,me society, but there are alot of people out there that are struggling on a 600. a month income. But don't worry, all you loud mouths out there will be in the same exact spot some day. you Will have a change of attude!!

I have no problem with those who use Wal Mart pharamacy or their grocery store because finances are tight. As for their regular retail, well I can tell you that joining Costco for $50 will save you a LOT more money than shopping at Wal Mart! If you buy in bulk (paper towels, TP, laundry detergent, etc.), then Costco has Wal Mart beat hands down...even on some food items. I never shop at Wal Mart any more because I refuse to buy anything made in China. And just about everything at Wal Mart is made in China. Say NO to Chinese imports, and NO to Wal Mart. Tell the import mongers that we want goods made in AMERICA.
