Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) instituted a new customer slogan this year: "Save Money. Live Better." Although it was intended to reinforce the retailer's position that it helps families in an age of increasing prices and general inflationary pressure, much of the public didn't get the memo, apparently.
Keep in mind that it's hard to completely trust anything by either the retailer or its watchdog groups like Wal-Mart Watch, the latter released a survey that concluded only 4% of people believe that Wal-Mart saves the average American family $2,500 annually. The same report says that customers may indeed be paying less, but Wal-Mart is not the only company that can help them pad those wallets and fill those purses.
Of course, Wal-Mart Watch says that the study that backs Wal-Mart's "$2,500" claim credits just the retailer's existence with saving the customer that much. Perhaps that's through pricing competition in the area and inflation control more than Wal-Mart customers specifically saving that much by shopping at Wal-Mart? That could certainly be inferred here.
Regardless, does the mere existence of Wal-Mart control the complete, surrounding retail ecosystem, causing prices to remain ultra-competitive? Probably so -- and Wal-Mart's "Save Money. Live Better" might just be a statement of fact rather than a corporate pitch. Either way, there's probably some good truth in there.

Wal-Mart is a real combination of China and Mexico. There are very few things in that store that are not made in China, and their biggest customer base is Mexican. And their prices and quality are routinely beat by Costco.

I am with you Susan.. I was too proud to shop these "cheap" stores. Then one day I too I had to start watching my spending so I keep tabs of what I spent at my regular grocery store and what I spent for the same exact items at Wal-mart. I don't clothing shop there because most things are not up to my standards of quality, but there are alot of items that I have seen at Target, Macy's and the like, for a LOT less. And yes, the prices have gone up at Wal-Mart, but so have they at all the other stores... Every one is under the energy crunch! I shop a lot of different stores because I am an informed shopper, keep tab of who sells the best item at the best price and then arrange my driving pattern to use the least gas. We have become a me, me ,me society, but there are alot of people out there that are struggling on a 600. a month income. But don't worry, all you loud mouths out there will be in the same exact spot some day. you Will have a change of attude!!

I have one reply to these people that are posting. The USA is a diverse country. Therefore not everyone speaks english. Granted that they should. If they are here, they should live by the same guidlines and rules we do. But, there is not reason to make this a racist debate. I have heard Mexicans, Mexicans, Mexicans. That has nothing to do with anything. If you went to another country, do you think they would force you to speak their language? No! Then Little Miss Diane (181) What the hell is up with "White Trash?" F*%K YOU! There is "TRASH" in every race. I'll Tell you one thing, The store I work in, is full of Lumbee Indians, African Americans, Latin Descent, Caucasions. We all have to work together. We get along. I am proud to be a honky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I want to tell you how much I LOVE everyone I work with. Regardless of race. If you want to go racial, find another blog that it is pertinent in. GOODBYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have shopped in grocery stores from New York (Brooklyn, Westchester County & Hamptons) to Southwest Florida to Delaware over the past 35 years, and I can say one thing: for fresh food & staples, the fancier and more pretentious the store, the higher the prices for the SAME thing - you get gouged. People go to fancy stores because they think the quality is better - think again. It's the SAME food, from the same suppliers, and if you think it isn't you're wrong.
Walmart is simple and unpretentious - it has good, solid food choices for much less. (Example: A Large can of Chock Full of Nuts Coffee- now $6.28 at Walmart in Delaware. In Super Fresh & Safeway in Rehoboth Beach Delaware the same can costs $10.98).
The food prices are now SOARING here in the US as we all know -Why? and what do you get? Pesticides, known and unknown on EVERY fruit and vegy that you buy (and unknown quantities on them from Mexico and South America where there are no overseeing agencies -- thanks to another blunder Clinton made allowing NAFTA to drive up the prices of our farmers), chemical fertilizers in the USA soaking the growing fields, and farmers who are PAID by the US Government NOT to grow fields of food so the prices can remain high. If you want "Organic" you pay double. Does THAT make any sense? You are paying MORE for food that the farmer produces for LESS money--(No chemical fertilizers, no pesticides - so you get gouged?) Walmart's vegetables and fruits are no real big bargain - but they are less expensive- especially when certain prices each week are "Rolled Back". I continue to shop there - all the time - I make the rounds at the other fancier stores too for their weekly sales for the things I need - NOT Junk food - Just fresh food. The junk and processed food sets the average American back a bundle each year. The general rule for avoiding certain food is this: If there are ingredients in the food item that you cannot pronounce OR you don't know what it is - DON'T BUY IT. Also- if it contains High Fructose Corn Syrup - Don't Buy It!
Shopping at Walmart is smart - getting gouged is your choice. Food good for health is all you need, not overprocessed, pasteurized, chemicalized, garbage that will ultimately cause disease.
I NEVER buy fruits or vegys from other countries - especially South American or Mexico! Also - grow your own fruits and vegetables as well. You think its hard to do? It isn't at all.
People should wise up, DEMAND less expensive, pesticide free, USA grown food and simplify their lives. Until then - shopping at Walmart is a very practical choice.

I must also add, that Wal*Mart does give a lot back in our communtiy. There is always a thank you note on our community board thanking Wal*Mart and our store manager for their contributions, whether it be finacial, or physical support. There are some good things about Wal*Mart. We have a good Wal*Mart family. Most of it is the hourly associates. A few managers do treat us as equals and not underlings. As far as choosing someplace else to work, in my community, there really isn't much to choose from and Wal*Mart is always hiring. Might not be the best, but atleast it is something. Even If I do have to struggle living from check to check, it's better than just giving up or being to lazy and just going on assitstance. NOW, don't get me wrong, if you need assistance, their is NOTHING wrong with that. Everyone needs help everyonce in awhile. So GOD BLESS YOU if you do need it. I for one don't mind my taxes going to those that NEED it. But, back to the subject, Wal*Mart doesn't really save any money after aggravation and ire. The only reason most associates shop Wal*Mart is that they can get what they need without making any other stops after work, and that little 10% discount they give us. That 10% is mainly on General Merchandise. They are giving way on some food products such as fresh, and I use that terms loosely, produce. Small steps. I think they are growing to fast and just trying to stay partially caught up. So lets just see what happens.

opportunistically speaking, any retailer will take advantage of the consumer. I find the pharmacy of specific interest. No matter if there is not a line, the wait time for a prescription is at least 45 minutes at any Wal-Mart I have gone to. Thusly, the comsumer has nothing else to do but wander the isle and find items they simply can not live without. After that scenario, I began going to my 'hometown' pharmacy and I save quite a bit of money. Add automotive into the mix and I really can't see how consumers save money. But, the idea is to get consumers into the store and keep them there for a long time. Wal-Mart is quite successful. Based on my personal observations, I don't feel people would asave money

As a family of 6 I am going to shop where I get the most bang for my dollar, for groceries that is. I also us the other services of Walmart. Clothing is an iffy. I personally like Target's clothing selection for children much better and the prices are good. But of course nothing beats the BX/PX at our local military base. The price of groceries at the commissary are very close to Walmarts prices on some items, but not all.
I do how ever make it a point to not buy anything that is not American, but it's hard!

Yes, I firmly believe that Wal-mart saves you money. I am a disabled, widowed, single mother who has no tranportation so I have to use a cab when I do my shopping. The first benefit to Wal-mart is that you can get everything (and anything!) you need in one visit. Very rarely is Wal-mart sold out of whatever item you need and there is generally a good selection of like items to choose from.
As far as prices there are so many examples I could give you....family size box of Rice Krispies -
WAL-mart price $2.89...local grocery store price
$4.50. Angel Soft toilet paper - .94 for a 4 pack compared to $2.19 at Publix. 3 Muskateers candy bars 6 pack - $2.50 at Wal-mart. Individual price of candy bars at Albertson's .89 cents. Tide clothes detergent - Wal-mart price $6.78. Price at
Target $7.99.
Yes, there are usually sales at different stores but for day-today overall low prices you can't beat Wal-mart.

Notice how company health insurance benefits keep decreasing? That's thanks to Walmart's lead in paying the lowest possible employee benefits. Other stores have to follow their lead or go out of business. Many, of course, do go out of business, but the ones left can't treat their employees as well as they used to and stay competitive. Walmart is the worst thing that has ever happened to American employment.

I notice most of the negative comments is mostly whinning from people who have a choice to work or shop elsewhere. Most of the negative feelings have come from media coverage who protray this business or any other business that is successful is unfair. Liberal thinking demands this type of business must pay benefits, but the business plan started by the company by and large has exluded. And yes they were caught breaking the rules and they paid dearly for it.I thought we lived in a free economy, and competion was allowed and I for one do not feel sorry for someone who made it a choice not to finish high school or train themselves. That what this is about

I don't know about saving $2,500/year per family because I only shop at Walmart for the things I need and know they're cheaper there - name brand items. I do know, however, that I paid $78 for two prescriptions last month and found that I could've gotten them filled at my local drug store for $54. These are ongoing meds so I know what my savings will be at my local drug store each month. I know there are $4 prescriptions at Walmart, but mine weren't on the list. On the other hand, I ordered a 'Dora the Explorer' 16" bicycle online for just under $60 which will be shipped to my local store (in the country) and they will assemble it for free, too.

Just to let you know Target sells the same exact merchandise that Wal-Mart sells and many other retail companies. If we in the US fought hard enough to keep companies here instead of outsourcing to other countries, we would not have this problem. If you have problems with a certain store that you shop at speak to management, and give them ways that they could change to enhance your shopping experience.

I know for a fact that walmart don't really save you money on nothing. My wife doesn't buy any clothing from the store (bad experience) she bought our then 9month old daughter something in her size a stuff didn't fit(CHINESE size) the groceries are just high if not higher than a regular store. Why do they need to match or beat a price if they are truly the money saver they claim to be

Well....WallyWorld will lose my business anyway
when I finally get moved away from this backwoods, backward area. I have seen a steady
deletion of items that I bought on a regular basis.
Instead of paying $2.72 for a particular deoderant..
I now get to pay $4.29 somewhere else because
WM deleted that ONE particular type out of the
whole brand.....they're more than happy to sell
you an iron....but they deleted the "iron cleaner"
that is necessary to remove starch buildup on
an iron.....so instead of paying $1.98 at WM....I
get to pay $4.98 elsewhere.....they deleted the
$2.88 desk calendars....so I now get to pay $4.97
elsewhere for a basic desk calender......
NOT TO MENTION.....the REMOVAL of their
FABRIC DEPARTMENT !!!!! I am so sorry that
this billion dollar corporation is not making enough
"moolah" off of cut fabric....to the point that
they just don't want to pay to keep personnel
there to cut fabric. I live in a REAL rural area....
my nearest SuperWM is an hour away...the nearest
Fabric Store is 1 1/2 hours away....we still
have our fabric dept at the moment......but when
I get moved.....THAT WalMart has already removed the fabric department.....SOOOOO....
I will have NO reason to shop at WallyWorld
ANY MORE !!!! If I have to hunt down everything
they have started deleting from their inventory
and go elsewhere for fabric......WHAT THE HELL
GOOD ARE THEY ??????? I am just SOOOOOO
amazed that they think the 'buying public' is
going to continue to support them when they
have slowly, but surely indicated by various
methods ..... That the PUBLIC DOES NOT MATTER
TO THEM...... some of these very rural areas
have NO WHERE ELSE to buy fabric but WallyWorld.... and the removal of THAT department just shows me that WalMart DOES
NOT CARE at all about what the public NEEDS....
Needless to say....I shop there...because right
now....it is WalMart or KMart and I hate KMart
with a passion.....but when I get moved........
Well...........you will have lost me forever
WallyWorld.................
