Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) instituted a new customer slogan this year: "Save Money. Live Better." Although it was intended to reinforce the retailer's position that it helps families in an age of increasing prices and general inflationary pressure, much of the public didn't get the memo, apparently.
Keep in mind that it's hard to completely trust anything by either the retailer or its watchdog groups like Wal-Mart Watch, the latter released a survey that concluded only 4% of people believe that Wal-Mart saves the average American family $2,500 annually. The same report says that customers may indeed be paying less, but Wal-Mart is not the only company that can help them pad those wallets and fill those purses.
Of course, Wal-Mart Watch says that the study that backs Wal-Mart's "$2,500" claim credits just the retailer's existence with saving the customer that much. Perhaps that's through pricing competition in the area and inflation control more than Wal-Mart customers specifically saving that much by shopping at Wal-Mart? That could certainly be inferred here.
Regardless, does the mere existence of Wal-Mart control the complete, surrounding retail ecosystem, causing prices to remain ultra-competitive? Probably so -- and Wal-Mart's "Save Money. Live Better" might just be a statement of fact rather than a corporate pitch. Either way, there's probably some good truth in there.

I work at a wal-mart and have alot of first hand knowledge of the poor treatment of there associates also the decit to it's customers. There is a customer that shops at our store who grew up with Sam Walton. He has told me that if Sam were alive today he would fire a lot of people that are full of greed.I do belive that supply and demand to do bussiness with Wal-Mart has driven alot of jobs out of the country and cheaper quality. They also keep there stores so under staffed that everyone has to work so hard that the moral is at an all time low, which in turn causes rude tired associates. For example I have 18years experience in grocery bussiness and have been with wal-mart for 5years and still make under $21,000 a year.Mean while we have assistant managers with less than 5years experience and even less socil skills making twice that and more.I could go on for a long while but better stop.

I shop at Walmart, have for years. I see customers from the high end neighbourhoods, as well as the low income. The name brand groceries are the same quality no matter where you buy them , so why pay nearly twice as much at the other stores. To me it is all about saving to be able to have a better quality of life. As far as clothes, Walmart carries many name brands as well. Hmmm, buy jeans at double the price just so you can say you don't shop at Walmart, then your'e a fool.

Walmart could save 2500 a year! It is possible but wal mart doesn't always compete with it's neighbor stores. Walmarts take on saving is to give you the idea that you are saving money over a period of time. But really have to watch there shelf tags and the bigger size maybe the cheaper than the regular size that wal mart offers. You see people all the time not looking to price and just grab the usually and not price shop. I guess that's what wal mart loves about stupid American shoppers. Guess the Americans are to busy or just to lazy to take sometime in saving some money. Also if you take notice wal mart is limiting products in it's stores. Now they give you less selection in your ultimate shopping experience at Wal mart. So who is really winning here!

I have worked at Wal-mart, [many years ago], shopped at Wal-mart, so I have no issues w/them as far as the store itself is concerned. They do have a lot of good items reasonably priced, as does Target and other similiar stores. And I like the superstores where you can do 'one-stop' shopping. However, I refuse to shop there unless I ABSOLUTELY have to simply because it's so crowded that you can barely turn around w/out running into someone. Then again, that just goes to show that a LOT of people do their shopping there and it must be for a reason after all this time.

Wal-Mart or Dog-Fart as my children and I affectionatly call it . Is a horrible store. I just dont see where some people say they save money there..? I shop for a family of 5 and they do not have the lowest prices and the produce is often overripe and overpriced. I would much rather shop at Harps or Price Cutters basically just about anywhere but Dog-Fart.
One day I needed some onions quick. I went to Dog-Fart neighborhood and they had a bag of onions with 4 onions in it. For $3.00 I couldnt believe it.. $3.oo for 4 small onions. They were also on the verge of rotting I noticed when I got them home. Next day I went to Harps to do my shopping. They had nice fresh bags of onions(about 7 or 8 big ones in each bag.) 2 bags for $3.00. Dog Fart does not save you money.
I will no longer be shopping at Dog-Fart ever again! And I plan to take as many of there customers with me as possible.

Does that $2,500 include all of the small companies that Wal-Mart has put out of business and all of the jobs that Wal-Mart has forced to China?

How much more do we pay for gas because Walmart buys its products from China causing the big increase in fuel charges because of China's needs. The good paying jobs have been exported to the Far East. How many $ has this cost the average wage earner??? How many of our small companies can no longer compete because of the leverage Walmart uses to drag down our pricing.
I think you'll find that we all loose much more than $2500 because of Walmart and similars. Sam Walton's theme WAS "Made in America". I can't help but wonder if he's turning in his grave???

I think that there is some merit to Wal Mart's claim, but they're also taking some credit that is not necessarily related to their "great" prices. For example, gas prices over the past year or so have gone absolutely nuts! So Wal Mart figures that if they use a complex complicated formula that takes into consideration how many separate trips the average person makes in order to shop for food, clothing, luxury items such as computers, tvs, etc., and hardware related items. The list can go on and on with each catagory being a separate trip. Then they "guesstimate" how many trips the average person makes to each of these stores in a year's time. Let's say for example you shop for groceries once a week, clothing once a month, buy music cd's once a month, bed and bath once a month, and visit the hardware store once a month. That's a total of 100 trips per year. If you lived 15 miles from each of these stores (30 miles round trip), that's a total of 3,000 miles traveled during the year. Since gas prices have risen over $1 per gallon in the past year or so, you can save about 50 trips per year by doing all your shopping at Wal Mart. At 30 miles round trip, that amounts to about $1,500 in savings that have nothing to do with Wal Mart's low prices! Using Wal Mart's logic, I can save consumers at least $1,500 per year by getting them to shop at http://www.onlineshoppingmallnbg.com, which is my online shopping mall. They can purchase all of their healthy candy at http://www.gourmetchocolatenbg.com, which is my high antioxidant healthy chocolate web site. I also have a distinct advantage over Wal Mart. While at my online shopping mall, customers can visit http://www.freemortgagequotesnbg.com and apply for a mortgage (FHA and VA also). Imagine that!

I use Wal-Mart. That is what it is there for. Why would I pay more for an item somewhere else, when I can get it at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club for less?
As for their business practices, I think it is despicable of Wal-Mart to discontinue the age-old tradition of the Lay-away.
For many, that is the ONLY way that they can even have a decent Christmas. For folks that make the lowly minimum wage, or for those on a fixed income, the lay-away just made good sense.
For poor folks, it was, as I said, possibly the ONLY way that they even had a Christmas to remember.
Will this keep me from shopping at Wal-Mart? No. I see no sense in adding injury to insult. But, if there is an item that I wish to purchase that costs more than the amount of money that I have, I WILL go get it somewhere that offers lay-away service.
Hey Wal-Mart, not everyone qualifies for your Wal-Mart credit card ! There are many that have a bad creedit rating because of having a low income. But guess what? IT DOES NOT KEEP THEM FROM SPENDING MONEY ON THEIR HOPES AND THEIR DREAMS.
Lower prices every day? Maybe so. But a friend of the poor? I hardly think so.

I love walmart superstore and it does save money period. It suprises me the people who profess to love target and they don't support our troops or wouldn't let the salvation army put a bell ringer out to gather monies that are very much needed for their programs. Come on walmart on one hand has closed alot of mom and pop shops because of their pricing but when you are raising a family it is important to try to get the best bang for your buck. And as far as junk goes you can find it anywhere.
I met a women at a veg auction one day that says to me that she never ever shops in any stores she cans, she auctions, she yard sales etc.
to save money now what is that about she has to spend alot on that because i know i dabled in that this summer and the monies i spent were alot comparied to the liby's corn i could have bought at walmart for 50 cents a can.
The value of the items i canned to me are worth more then the savings.
So the argument is some people like walmart and some don't and I do because anybody who goes grocery shopping that is raising a family cant compare it to safeway, giant NO WAY.
