Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) instituted a new customer slogan this year: "Save Money. Live Better." Although it was intended to reinforce the retailer's position that it helps families in an age of increasing prices and general inflationary pressure, much of the public didn't get the memo, apparently.
Keep in mind that it's hard to completely trust anything by either the retailer or its watchdog groups like Wal-Mart Watch, the latter released a survey that concluded only 4% of people believe that Wal-Mart saves the average American family $2,500 annually. The same report says that customers may indeed be paying less, but Wal-Mart is not the only company that can help them pad those wallets and fill those purses.
Of course, Wal-Mart Watch says that the study that backs Wal-Mart's "$2,500" claim credits just the retailer's existence with saving the customer that much. Perhaps that's through pricing competition in the area and inflation control more than Wal-Mart customers specifically saving that much by shopping at Wal-Mart? That could certainly be inferred here.
Regardless, does the mere existence of Wal-Mart control the complete, surrounding retail ecosystem, causing prices to remain ultra-competitive? Probably so -- and Wal-Mart's "Save Money. Live Better" might just be a statement of fact rather than a corporate pitch. Either way, there's probably some good truth in there.

I shop WalMart. I watch those price signs increase in price just so they can lower the price to put it on sale so they can say that they are saving you money. For example, roasted peanuts in the bag were $1.64 in September. They lowered the price to $1.45 to save you .19 cents. They then raised the price of the peanuts again to $1.74 in October and now this week in November to $1.98 and reducing the price for a "sale" to $1.25. That's how they are saving us money. They raise the prices and then put them on sale creating a larger margin of sales so that they can B.S. the public . Common marketing strategy. Looks good on paper but it's deceptive marketing.

This all depends on what a person chooses to buy at Wal-mart. In nonparishable groceries, cleaning products, personal care items, CDs/DVDs, books, and brand name OTC medicines, Walmart can be good. People have to use discretion when buying things like furniture, electronics, housewares, clothing and other products. They have to look at how the products are made before throwing money down. I've had well-made Walmart clothes last longer than department store clothing. I wouldn't suggest buying linens, pillows, toys, rugs and some other products there. They usually break or tear faster. Pillows go flat fast. You're not saving money there because the quality is so low. Also, avoiding most produce and meats might be a good idea, no matter how much cheaper they are. You can usually get the fresher deal at a regular grocery store that restocks produce more often, as it usually lasts longer. There's no money saved if you have to throw your fruits and veggies out in the 3 days when they could be good 1-2 weeks when bought elsewhere. People just need to use their heads when choosing to buy at Wal-mart, so they don't get misled by what appears ok on paper.

Jason, if you say they are cheaper on groceries, that's a lie. I just provided a list of stuff I consume on the other page, that Walmart is more expensive on. So that's crap. I don't care what link you have....I've been inside a walmart, and inside my supersaver and penn dutch market. I have the receipts, I don't need a link. I'll stick with the toilet paper and garbage bags for Walmart, thank you. I know where to save money. And that's not even accounting for the quality.

The Walmart's deals are not about we the people.Wake up America! They like the other CORPORATIONS are playing we the people for fools. They feel they can sell us anything and we buy it. No longer do I see made in the USA all things carry the made in China, India etc. You want quality well that not going to happen no time soon. Ever wonder why not.Cheaper is their motivation and they profit from it while they laugh all the way to the bank. Get smart America.Shop around, don't get sucker in on the bullshit that's advertised. I waiting for my $ 2500 check from Walmart, Target,k-Mart etc.Do you think it coming soon? Fed up with the BS. Become a smarter consumer. Cheap ain't cheap if you have to repeat.

I have to admit, I am one of so many that shop at Wal-Mart. I think many people think they are saving a lot by shopping at Wal-Mart by not using as much gas to travel around to several different stores and Wal-mart prices are definitely the lowest, and if they aren't, they will price match. But is it really saving money if the quality is terrible? You really can't go wrong with the grocery items, but the household items, clothing, toys, etc. are so cheaply made your lucky if you can buy something that will last more than a week, and then you have to replace it. I think if you calculate in this factor you may not be saving as much as you think. And even people that realize this, still keep buying the junk.

Walmart is designed in such a way you can't help but walk past everything to get to what you want. Lets say you have to get some shoes, well the shoe department is ALL the way in the back of the store. You must walk past clothes, food, diapers, and movies. Lets not go to the new movie Vends that there setting up. If your wal-mart has one of these, you know what I mean. Well I take that back, Lets go there... You have a big red movie screen. (Walmart really uses the color scheme here) Red raises your blood pressure causing you to get excited. You see all these NEW releases for just $1, how tempting. But once you've stuck your credit card in, you've committed. Now it's only $1 for one night, but if you forget to bring it back, it's another $1, up to 10-15 days. Every Vend is different. You've paid $10-$15 for a movie that isn't even new. But I suppose thats the way of business. I'm sure if we all had a booming company like Wal-mart or Target, we wouldn't be angry at all

When you are raising a family and one breadwinner is disabled, you have to look at your money situation. I can spend $100 at Walmart for the same (name brand) groceries, etc that would cost me $150 at Safeway, and $175-200 at Albertsons. The clothes for the kids (Rustler, Wrangler) are all better priced than the retail outlets for the same thing, and the same quality. As for hardware needs, etc, I can get (again) the same quality brands that Ace sells for less at Walmart. All one-stop, takes me an hour a weekend to do all of my shopping. If I had to go to all of the "other" stores, I'd be at it for 1/2 the day!

Wal-Mart's Groceries are much cheaper than other chain stores. An example - a brick of Pollyo mozz cheese is over $5 at a store called Price Chopper. At Wal-Mart it is around $3 and change.
However, I do not buy meat there. I wish they would improve the meat quality.

Since Wal-mart is so great why do they have one of the worst records in pay and benefits with their employee's? If anyone wants to see how great wal-mart Is try seeing how much they pay and how they treat their employee's here in the states. There was a documentary on Wal-Mart and this woman that worked at wal-mart in Germany said there is no better pay and the benefits are great. And they also get 36 weeks vacation.
Yeah, 36 weeks I couldn't believe it the first time so I went back and made sure I heard correctly. But in most european countries the goverments have laws that make employers give their employee's a certain amount of vacation per year. But then again one of stipulations the German goverment had for Wal-Mart to put stores there was there had to be unionized jobs. Wal-Mart makes millions of dollars a year... most likely hundreds of millions is what they pocket. Yet they can't put up the money to pay their low paid low benefit employee's here in the states. It's said to see how wal-mart treats their own brethren.

WALMART BLOWS!! No other American company has done as much as WalMart to erode the U.S. economy and lower the wages of workers. Smoke and mirrors sales pitches and sub-standard quality merchandise seem to draw in customers who are satisified with lower quality of life than others are willing to accept!!

Years ago, Walmart had only made in USA merchandise. Then they switched to the made in China crap. If they were smart, they would have a back section in each store once again supplying only things made in USA, and then it would be up to the individual to decide if he/she wants good stuff made here or crap made there.

The title of the blog is "Does Walmart really save....." That got me to read the article. Unfortunatly, the article does nothing to answer its own question.
Internet journalism at its best: all jabber, no research.
Sadly typical.

If you have a Wal-Mart in your town then you probably also have at least one Dollar General which sells clothes, food, toys, etc. You may have to look a little harder for what you want at DG but it's worth the search as I sit in my 5.00 sweat pants and my 2.00 top-looking pretty darn good if I say so myself! Gotta run, it's lunch time and my 1.50 Chunky Vegetable Soup is ready!

I shop at wal mart because of money and I only by food, toiletries, paper goods. Not because I want to because my paycheck needs to stretch. I did want to mention that I applied for a job at wal mart for a Managers position 3 years ago. I was hired after 3 interviews with people that acted like the were legends in there own minds, only to find out a manger gets paid 8-10 dollars and hour depending on experience, and you get work every holiday and every crappy shift there is. So cashiers start at a whopping 6.75 and hour. Its no wonder they get employees who cant make change without looking at the register, or cant speak english, or cant find a thing when you ask for help, or have no idea what you are talking about. Its very sad and if I could I would never shop there again.

I did a price comparison of Giant Eagle Grocery Stores Versus Wal-Mart. I compared prices on 30 of the most commonly purchased "staples" that everyone buys. Things like milk, eggs, bread cereal, etc. I compared branded products so I could do exact price comparisons. The prices at Giant Eagle were almost exactly 20% higher for my shopping cart of 30 items.
In my case, I purchase more than $1000 dollars a month in groceries for my family of 4. I save at least $2500 dollars per year in groceries by shopping at Wal-Mart. Previously I shopped at Giant Eagle and wasted my money on their high markups. That was until they finally opened a Wal-Mart SuperCenter near my home.
Wal-Mart and Sam's Club are the real deal when it comes to saving money! If you don't shop at Wal-Mart you're wasting your money!
By the way I can use the money I save to make a car payment each month!
