Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) instituted a new customer slogan this year: "Save Money. Live Better." Although it was intended to reinforce the retailer's position that it helps families in an age of increasing prices and general inflationary pressure, much of the public didn't get the memo, apparently.
Keep in mind that it's hard to completely trust anything by either the retailer or its watchdog groups like Wal-Mart Watch, the latter released a survey that concluded only 4% of people believe that Wal-Mart saves the average American family $2,500 annually. The same report says that customers may indeed be paying less, but Wal-Mart is not the only company that can help them pad those wallets and fill those purses.
Of course, Wal-Mart Watch says that the study that backs Wal-Mart's "$2,500" claim credits just the retailer's existence with saving the customer that much. Perhaps that's through pricing competition in the area and inflation control more than Wal-Mart customers specifically saving that much by shopping at Wal-Mart? That could certainly be inferred here.
Regardless, does the mere existence of Wal-Mart control the complete, surrounding retail ecosystem, causing prices to remain ultra-competitive? Probably so -- and Wal-Mart's "Save Money. Live Better" might just be a statement of fact rather than a corporate pitch. Either way, there's probably some good truth in there.

NIKKI, Walmart has NEVER treated me like a slave. I have worked there for over 4 years. I love my store. If any of what you are saying is true, they would not be the only store doing this. Do you know of any other places doing that to their employees? You see stories about it on the news and read about it in the papers. Do you know, first hand, that these things are going on? No you do not. You shouldn't spread lies about things you know NOTHING about.

CHICKEPOO, JUST MOVE THEN. Stop complaining. Don't shop there. If you are SO unhappy with walmart, why do you continue to go there? Do ytou really need that much fabric? By wrinkle free clothing--Walmart carries it--then u won't need an iron or iron cleaner. switch to another deodorant. Learn to change. That is what retail and LIFE is about. DUH!

In response to comment 46 I just happen to work at a Wal Mart and I don't like being referred to as "welfare people" I can assure you that I nor most of the other hard working employees at my store are on welfare. I actually make decent money and am quite happy with my job. People should not make statements when they don't know what they are talking about.

My 2 cents (No, I did not save those by shopping at WalMart!)
I really do like WalMart...but as with anything in life there are pros and cons!
I hate the new super WalMarts...I stuck by our little old store until they built their new one, Liberty, Texas...lines are horribly long with only 3 out of 20 something open!!! It was said our store is one of the biggest ones in the US...not sure why if they don't enough ppl to work it! Bathrooms are bad, they stink and are already filthy! One woman in the pharmacy is soooo hateful! Can never find help in hardware! Produce area stinks of rotting fruit and veggies! Sporting Goods does NOT carry the same or as many hunting items as they used to! So, I try to go to other WalMarts/towns if I have major shopping to do!
I won't buy meats there! Grocery prices are not as cheap as our wonderful grocery store HEB here in Texas. But I do buy the occasional list of grocery items there if I don't have to buy a lot!
As for clothing...it's good for decent casual clothing...but all their "dressy" or "career" wear is ugly (to me anyway) Men's wear is good though!
Employees...well you have a few nice ones, but some are very rude and I doubt it's because they hate their jobs...they are just nasty ppl! I get paid less than WalMart employees and I'm always friendly with my customers, no matter what!
Everyone keeps mentioning employees not making enough there and getting government help to live on...at least they are trying to work and make money for themselves. The more they work or make the less benefits they will get from the government. They could be sitting at home on their ass all day, driving new vehicles, having kids on top of kids and raking in the government aid!
All the talk about products from China and Target being better...did a lil online window shopping/comparison:
Mr. Coffee (made in CHINA)
Grind & Brew 12 cup coffee maker
Target = $59.99
WalMart = $49.88
12 Cup (stainless steel) programmable maker
Target = $69.99
WalMart = $59.88
Back to Basics (Made in CHINA)
Auto Serve Smoothie Maker
Target = $39.99
WalMart = $28.88
Kind of obvious where you save the most money!
And geeeee, Target selling products made in CHINA!!! How dare they do that...bet you can't even find a smoothie maker made in the US! As well as many other products we all love and need!
Some of the biggest "American" companies have all their products made in China (or components of their products)...so even if a store is buying from these "American" companies...the product is still made in China!!!
There are good and bad products worldwide! Recalls have been made on products worldwide!!
**I do save money at WalMart on papergoods, pet supplies, Health & Beauty items, Medications, electronics, etc.
**Groceries - No, I do not save anything!
BUT, I like to bargain hunt if I'm shopping for one thing...However, I'm not going to spend $8 in gas to drive all over the place picking up one or two items here and there because I can save a penny or two! That's just not very bright if you ask me!
I was once an employee of WalMart...until I was doing my after work shopping for my days off...I had a coupon "If you buy this, you get that free" Well, a wonderful manager that we had (everyone hated her!) told me that since I was an employee I could not use a get anything free coupon or it was the same as stealing from the company and she took my stuff away, and the coupon...and well I never went back!

WAL-MART SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
I Can't find what I want in that dump. They have bad produce quality, The floors are dirty, the shopping carts at a store I have to drive 20 minutes to are hard to move because they use heavy wheels and plus no wipes to clean the handles of the cart, the restrooms are disgusting, they are always out of stuff, and most of the store carries tons of crap from China. Why shop Wal-Mart when you can find better food in SuperTarget and hometown grocery stores.
Plus I think The new slogan sucks as well, they hardly save me money.
I HATE WAL-MART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will Wal-Mart pay for your funeral when you die from their Chinese lead? I didn't think so. So now you are actually loosing money by shopping at Wal-Mart. Just a matter of time before it is discovered in all of the clothing that they sell.

Tracy, You are right about being understaffed. Our store has hired more people but they need to hire more in my area. I'm a people greeter and we get to deal with the crap. Our store just got rid of the pink return stickers a few weeks ago so now all returns have to be done with a telazon. It takes longer sometimes when a customer has more then a couple items but it is alot better then the pink stickers because these can't be removed.
Also we have to start cracking down on items going out that aren't in bags.
I get alot of complaints and people "threatning" to not shop at wal mart anymore but that's life. Having your recept checked is part of the shopping experience. It's not that we like to do it's that we HAVE to do it.
Your also very right about the cashiers. Most of the cashiers we had left to go to Best Buy.

I read all these comments against Wal-mart and I can only laugh. It just seems that every time I am in Wal-mart so is 3/4 of the town I live in and its a pretty big town outside of Tampa. I am sure that most of those that complain are the first one's in line for a great sale.

Each and every retailer advertizes it's "savings", Wal-Mart is no different. Anyone who gives any credability to these claims is not the brightest bulb on the tree! And, this 'discussion' is equally ridiculous. How anyone with a brain can have an opinion that accepts these stupidities, is beyond comprehension.

Wal-mart has lower prices than Target, K-mart etc. on items that all stores carry, like holiday decorations, candy, certain toys and so on.. Come on, people, M&M's are the same at every store...but Wal-mart sells 'em cheaper. Go to hell, Target...Wal-mart wins every time!!

COMMENT 213, So you're telling us that you can pay your rent, put clothes on your family, feed your family, pay for utillities, put gas in your car, pay for health insurance, make your car payment, etc... all on your Wal-Mart salary?

Reply to comments #2 & 20 I'm not a big Walmart fan since nearly everything they sell is produced in China but Target is owned by the french who refused to support our troops and also refused to let the marines put toys for tots collection points at their stores. So which is the lesser of the two evils?

I bought a Portable DVD player at WalMart and it had a rechargeable battery. My Wife and I plugged it in to recharge and went to sleep. About an hour later our place was filled with the smell of burning plastic. When we pulled out the plug, the plastic cover on the cheap made in china crap DVD player was melted. I'm certain had we not been in a light sleep that would have caught fire and possibly killed us. I will never buy the "cheap" made in china crap from WalMart again.
I Think Americans are really not saving half as much as they think. When you have to repurchase more crap to replace the crap you bought the first time around, you actually pay more. My motto is, if you can't afford good quality, save until you can, in the long run you'll save money by purchasing quality. It lasts longer, it works better, and you can even sell it again when/if you get tired of it, on EBAY.

WalMart has been extremely successful because they have supplied good products to the masses at low prices, maintained clean, well-stocked stores, and eliminated long waits at checkout counters .. something other businesses have NOT been able to do.
Unions hate WalMart, yet I know a number of union members who shop regularly at WalMart .. for the savings, of course.
I also know several protestors who "officially" hate WalMart, yet they also buy things there, for the savings.
Many times I have personally saved 20-50% on name brand items at WalMart, and they don't play games like most of the other stores do. That is reason enough for me to patronize WalMart.

I shop Sears, Target, and have seen most of their stuff now comes from over seas. I find the same things at WaMart cheaper. I would love to buy USA made things but they no longer have them in their stores. Walmart now carries Dell pcs. $700.00 for every thing you need inc. 19" flat screen monitor. And yes we save appox. $2400.00 a year shopping at Walmart

I am happy for the ones who seem so patriotic about wal-mart and jobs, but I would like to bring to your attention that in small-town USA especially, but also larger cities, Wal-mart usually generates between 500-900 jobs, all of which are paid on average $9/hr for non-management. Thank you Wal-mart for saving the small town where I am from for without you, many would be on welfare, and thank you for saving so many homeless who need jobs in the city, oh yeah, and thank you for saving my family $2500/year while bringing quality items that I can afford. (As for the $30 tv guy, welcome to 2007, if a $30 tv lasts you a MONTH, it is a GREAT deal!)
