I'll bet you ten bucks you can't guess what Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts is up to! If I were a resident of Massachusetts and he has his way, making such a bet over the Internet would make me a criminal. The governor would like to toss me in jail for up to two years and fine me as much as $25,000 for gambling online.
The dude is not against gambling, however. The law making Internet gaming a crime in Massachusetts is part of the legislation he's pushing to allow three casinos to be built in his state. This leads me to conclude that Patrick doesn't hate gaming; he hates the Internet.
According to an article in today's Boston Globe, Internet gambling was a $12 billion industry in 2005. Certainly, I can see that Internet gaming has inherent social costs -- it feeds gambling addiction, its honesty is poorly regulated, and taxes are hard or impossible to recover. Last, but not least, offshore gambling companies are hard to hit up for campaign contributions.
None of which can be said for brick and mortar casinos. The casinos, if approved, would bring a quick $600 million or more in licensing fees to the state's coffers, as well as employment. Most states also claim that in-state casinos slow the flow of resident's income to out-of-state spots.Earlier today, I blogged about the advances in computer programs that have learned to play poker and other internet games better than any human beings could hope to, which could be a silver stake in the heart of online gaming. Perhaps the Governor should allow the free market to work its magic.
I wouldn't bet on it, though.

How it works in Massachusetts:
We have a senator who took the life of a young girl and got a slap on the wrist and 40 yrs as an elected Senator by 30% of individuals who vote. Think maybe nepotism plays a role?
The reason on-line gambling is soon to be an illegal offense, is due to WHO uses the them. When the state realized many state workers were running Poker Tournaments, instead of prosecuting their own, the powers that be decided to spin it. Now when these tournaments are run all they do is call it a charity event and presto - everything is on the up and up.
This is how the state works and will always work-starts in school systems at young ages. Teachers create "bad kids" versus the "good kids". Slowly but surely, just like the state they pick and choose who will fail and who will succeed.
Keeps nepotism in order- ever notice how the judge is related to the DA who is related to the politician, who is related to the cop, who is related to the teacher. When democracy is run by cousins-it's not democracy - it's nepotism.
Funny thing is, last weekend I was coming home and was pulled over in what is labeled "a sobriety check point". I had no problem, I don't drink and drive. But I thought to myself, what a strange place to have the check point. My suggestion to the officer was they were in the wrong part of the city if they wanted arrest drunk drivers. He didn't like the comment, but I'm sure they new why they were there.
My suggestion to anyone who reads this comment is start to understand why there seems to be so much success in other's life while the struggle continues for generations in others.

The public is so mis-informed about on-line sports betting, many of these sites you are dealing with your neighborhood bookmaker. The bigger guys have set up operations in the islands and for a fee per customer they will handle your work and give you a readout at the end of the week, in other instances they work on a percentage with the bookmaker and the loss is split among the two. Either way the money is still collected as it always was, with the same problems, same addictions, and same credit lines.

Just what we need in Mass., "the PAY STATE", More stupid laws. I swear they want to make every one of us a criminal. MORE LAWS MAKE MORE CRIMINALS. Its mostly the fault of the voters. Why do they keep electing the rich to rule over them? Don't they understand that rich politicians do not understand what it is to work for a living? Passing more stupid laws is not working for a living. Get a real job, Deval, and get the hell out of my life, and the lives of the hard working people in Massachusetts!

It has always amazed me as to how a Church can think gambling is evil yet they run Bingo Games???? Isn't that gambling???? Now we have a Governor who I voted for. Opening Casino's all over the state and in the same breadth telling me it is criminal to gamble online. I happen to be one of those house bound people who spend probably $20 to $30 dollars a month for entertainment playing tournaments when some people spend $50 $100 in one night drinking. If the Governor really wanted to be effective, he along with the Federal Government should maybe scrutinize online gambling to insure honesty and integrity, and protect it's citizens from sites that cheat. Not take away entertainment that is enjoyed by the many that are house bound and or bored. It is all so hypocritical of our Government and Churches who say . You gamble with me or it is Illegal or Sinful.
Discusting isn't it??????????????

Governor Patrick is like all the other politicians we have elected. His own concern isn't for his constituents, but rather for himself and lining his own pockets with the money he can get from the land-based casinos. I am so tired of their self-serving, self-promoting attitudes and actions. When do they begin to have the interests of the people who elected them foremost on their minds. We need a whole new group in the Legislature around the country. I will NOT be voting for any of the incumbents.

He's not against gambling people, your missing the point of the legislation, it's not about your privacy rights ethier...
It's about control of revenues...period.
Massachusetts hates competition in the area of gambling, it's why their (the most succesful lottery in the country) lottery is so secretive and it's against the law for lottery type systems to be in place - competition... is bad in massachusetts.
The state doesn't want anyone or anything to compete with their proposed casinos. That's the bottom line. They want it all... they want to be THE monopoly.
That's the ONLY reason for this legislation. If the state wasn't paving the road for casinos in the this legislation on online gambling and making criminals out of the millions in MA. who do gamble (yep, Massachusetts has one of the largest online gambling communities in the country) would not exist.

One thing that a number of people, including Govenor Patrick seem to have forgotten is that in order to invade the privacy of a residence, Law Enforcement Officers, need a Search Warrent. To get that, they need probable cause, which they can't get either. Give it up Gov! Your gonna lose big time!!!!!
