Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) is insuring more of its workers. It does not seem to want to advertise that fact, but it is true nonetheless. According to The New York Times, "Wal-Mart, the nation's largest private employer, provides insurance to 100,000 more workers than it did just three years ago -- and it is now easier for many to sign up for health care at Wal-Mart than at its rival Target (NYSE:TGT), whose reputation glows in comparison."
The world's largest retailer is still offering less than half of its US workers healthcare benefits. The company plans more improvements with all workers being able to pick from a group of different plans by next year.
The move does not come without some potential risk for shareholders. Wal-Mart's margins in the US are already pinched by slow same-store sales, high fuel costs, and a slowing economy. While insuring more people may be the right thing to do, over time it may not help the firm's share price.
Being a Wal-Mart worker may be getting better than being an investor.

Why does everyone always pick on WalMart? My wife has worked part time for them for over 7 years. She makes nearly $15.00/hour and has had benefits since day one of her employment. And every WalMart employee at her store also has health insurance, and always has. Could it perhaps be the unions in these other states that are trying to paint a bad picture of WalMart in their continuing attempt to unionize them?

WELL WALMART WILL ALWAYS GET PICKED ON, JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE SO BIG. SO GET USED TO IT.
I HAVE WORKED FOR WALMART FOR 8 YRS. FIVE DAYS AWEEK 8 HRS A DAY.
I DIDNT KNOW THAT A PART TIME PERSON CAN MAKE SO MUCH AT WALMART.
UNIONS WILL ALWAYS PICK ON WALMART GET USED TO IT. THE UNIONS DONT LIKE WALMART , CAUSE WALMART WOULDNT GO UNION.
IF WALMART EVER DID GO UNION, IT WOULD CHANGE WALMART BIG TIME.
THE INSURANCE AND BENEFITS ARE THE ONLY REASON I HAVE BEEN WITH THEM THIS LONG.
I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD GIVE WALMART WORKERS 20% DISCOUNT INSTEAD OF 10%. BUT THATS MY OPINION.

If you got 5 days 40 hours you must work in one of their Distribution centers as store employees sure do not share that steady schedule. 32 - 35 is the norm here. 40 is rare.

Wal-Mart isn't picked on, it's a target (!) of the union bosses and flunkies who want to do to retailing what they've accomplished in the American automobile industry -- biting the hand that feeds until it's infected, withers, and dies.

The only reason wal mart gives insurance is because of the pressure from the unions. Unions only want livable wage for the workers. They sure are terrible.

My husband has worked for Wal Mart for over 15 years. The health insurance has improved in recent years due to the pressure of the media but it is a long way from the term good. This next year, 2008, they have new plans with less benefits and a raise in premiums. We now have an out of pocket maximum of $5000 verses the $1750 per person we had this calendar year. We had to take this high out of pocket or we could not afford to take the insurance. We will be paying close to $500 per month and have less benefits than years past. Also, the company will rarely give the maximum raise to anyone.
So the insurance will cost us $.75 per hour more and my husband's raise was $.40 per hour. So we are in the hole $.35 an hour this year. Also, all employees who are eligible for time and a half on Sundays are no longer allowed to work it. There went another $300.00 out of our pocket. We have become a member of the working poor. Jobs are hard to come by in our area and at our age. Were stuck. My suggestion is to work WalMart as a second job, not as your primary one. Wish someone would have given this advise to us several years ago. Like my husband says, "at least he has a job?"

I am a Wal-Mart Mgr and I think alot of what is being said in this blog is not true. I have been w/ the company for over 7 yrs. working my way up from a sales floor associate to a mbr. of Mgt. I ALWAYS recieved an "above standard" raise...as do many of my employees. Yes the health plans could be better, I agree w/ that 100%.
Do you think that we close on Sunday's? Well obviousley we do not...and EVERY associate is eligable from day one for the extra $1 an hour on Sunday's...and plently of them work it since we can NOT run the store without our associates.

Everyone keeps forgetting Wal-Mart medical benefits is for catastrophic coverage. I have been with the company 18 years and I love this company. I understand the total compensation package which is over 50 benefits. The most used benefit is medical benefits. I have been ill most of this year. The first thing I noticed was my cost for service was 50% cheaper just because I had Wal-Mart insurance. I paid 20% of the remaining balance because of the plan I chose. With the many doctor visits, MRIs and constant changes of medication, I met my out of pocket expense last month so now all of my doctor visits and medicine is free. I am scheduled for surgery this month and it will be free. My hospital stay will be free. My physical therapy will be free. My medicine will be free. My follow up visits will be free. I thank God I have Wal-Mart insurance coverage. After my recovery my job will still be there waiting for me.
