Looks like the so-called "war on Christmas" has begun. Lowe's Cos. (NYSE: LOW) and PetSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PETS) have angered the American Family Association, a prominent religious conservative group. The home improvement retailer earned AFA's ire by calling Christmas trees "family trees" in a catalog. A Lowe's spokeswoman, speaking to the Charlotte Observer, called using the term an error that came during the "creative process." Lowe's has profusely apologized and the AFA has apparently forgiven the company. "We appreciate Lowe's for listening to its customers and responding appropriately to our concerns," AFA said on its website.
It isn't clear whether PetSmart has seen the light as well. Because the seller of dog treats and cat scratching posts apparently isn't doing enough to promote Christmas, AFA sent out an "ActionAlert" to its members titled "At PetSmart, Christmas doesn't exist."
"A search on PetSmart's home page found 252 references to 'holiday.' It also found 43 references to 'Christmas,'" the AFA says. "But, alas, this is very misleading. When you click on 'Christmas' you are directed to a page containing the same gifts you get when you search for holiday. Of all the items that pop up when you search for Christmas, not a single one mentions Christmas or is identified as being a Christmas gift."
I guess the AFA hasn't seen the people bringing their pets to their local PetSmart to have their pictures taken with Santa Claus. PetsMart denies that it is anti-Christmas, although it is planning to make changes to its Web site to address the concerns that were raised, a spokesman said.
Wildmon's agenda is pretty far-reaching. It has organized a boycott of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) because of the automaker's support of gay marriage. It even mentions that, "Ford actively recruited homosexuals for employment by advertising on gay job websites."
I guess that peace on earth and goodwill toward men has its limits.

The last line of this article, properly written would understate the real issue here.
The line should read (proper translation) "Peace on earth towards men of goodwill".
Peace will always be absent from those whose lives are lived in the absence of goodwill.

why are we fighting about a "peace of earth" holiday, the pagans originated christmas as a winter solstice holiday, the christmas tree was a pagan ritual originating in germany. scholars have always come to the conclusion that christ was born sometime in august. Christians in the old days claimed christmas to sway pagans from "the devil". Next the reason we call it happy holidays is becuase the jewish faith also have hanaka(spelling) and we also have new years. so in every right it can be merry christmas, happy holidays, happy new year blah blah blah. I am a believer in jesus, I pray, and I am saved by him, but that doesn't mean that I cant also see the truth.

BYW. Christmas was originally a pagan holiday. And the birth of Jesus Christ wasn't actually 12/25. Look it up people!

I am a Christian. I feel that we're all entitled to our own views on the topic of how we go about our holiday traditions. Personally, I CHOOSE to support only the retailers who in turn reflect my values, not only at Christmas, but all throughout the year. I feel like people should take a stand for what they believe in. Christians are the majority in this country and should not be forced into conformities of the minorities. It's very easy to sit back and conform but it takes true believers and witnesses of Christ to take a stand - this doesn't mean you're starting trouble - just standing up for what you believe in. Christians know that Jesus did just that during His time on earth. If you CHOOSE to not believe in Him, it is certainly your choice and one you will have to be accountable for one day.

I believe the Bible said that sheperds in the sheep pastures saw a star that meant Jesus had been born (middle of December). Now, why would the sheperds be out in the fields in the middle of the night in December? Doesn't seem likely that Jesus was born in December, seems more likely that it was just another attempt by the Roman Catholic Church to get people to join their cult.

"To Helen & REnato, etc. So why are you a head-hunter for Christians? This is just one example of what the Christians are fed up with, (attacks). I've never seen a real Christian go on the attack on you atheists. You make it very easy for those who are trying to decide whether thy should explore the Bible or not. There is "liberal", and then there is hateful. It seems that some of the bloggers on here make it their mission to seek & try to destroy christians. Its notr happening, no one wants to be like you."
Why do you assume anyone who questions or disagrees with a Christian is an atheist? A liberal? No one is trying to destroy Christianity. I think many Christians who have distorted the religion have done that already. They don't need any help.
I think people get annoyed with the extreme, hypocritical, uneducated so-called Christian - not the real Christians.

Don't these effing idiots have anything better to do? Christmas is a freaking fairy tale. It has nothing to do with Jesus. It's a made-up story based on a pagan feast day that the early Christians co-opted to make cramming Christianity down pagan throats more acceptable. People who give this much of a crap about "religion" are complete boobs. They should be sterilized and not allowed to breed. God, get lives, freaks.

Oh heck, why not just take Christmas off the calendar as a holiday. Let's all work that day and let's stop buying gifts making all those stores profit from the day.

Mandy, you last comment is completely INSULTING as you are judging others for NOT believing in your beliefs and ASSUME that they will need to be held accountable. That is a judgment. That is NOT Christian.
Being a majority doesn't make you right. Being the majority doesn't give you permission to bully and shove your beliefs at everyone else. This is NOT what this country is about. However, I am wrong because this is EXACTLY what our country did to the Native Americans. They shoved their Christian beliefs down their throats and killed them off in order to obtain the land. Dominate and conquer. It's a belief system that all with values want to follow .
Since you are the majority and stated that you don't believe you should be forced to conform to the minority, you are really saying the minority should be forced to conform to the majority. Hmmm... that is just plain bullying... now it is just time to admit that you are a bully. :)

Don't take my comments out of context. That's notoriously what happens simply because Christians don't conform. I have never and would never be intentionally offensive to anyone. As I stated, you are equally entitled to your beliefs just as I am to mine. And furthermore, I am of Native American decent and Christian decent. Native Americans had religion back then as well, just expressively in a different nature. If you don't want to celebrate Christian holidays, then just don't. My only point is to not be offended that Christians do celebrate and that we do support our religious beliefs and those retailers, suppliers, etc. who also share the same value system that we have. Why should be that offensive to anyone?

Centuries ago, the United States of America, as it was to become known, was a place where people came for -- among other things -- religious freedom. Is it that way now? Barely!
Ours has become such a dollar-driven, litigious society that schools, stores and countless businesses are terrified of offending anyone!
[BTW, davmelcj, clever definition of ACLU!]
Yes, Christian holidays ARE largely bastardizations of Pagan holidays. Anyone who has enjoyed Halloween tales or a zombie movie, for example, has perpetuated the theft of others' rites and rituals.
Fortunately, the Constitution allows us ALL to practice our respective religions, so long as we break no laws and HARM NONE!
Blessed be.
