Nintendo (OTC: NTDOY)'s Wii gaming console was a non-contender -- an underdog -- this time last year. The gaming console with the funny name was set to launch with little fanfare compared to the Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 3 or Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)'s Xbox 360, launched a year earlier, but the Wii caught eyes because it was priced at only $250, compared to $600 for the PlayStation 3 and $400 for the Xbox 360. But then again, it had inferior graphics and other downgrades. My, my -- how customers didn't care about its competitors' touted features and other fluff.
Why not, you ask? The Nintendo Wii featured the most innovative and immersive gameplay, regardless of the hi-def video or audio output and inferior graphics. Nintendo figured out that consumers wanted a newer kind of gameplay -- not photo-realistic blood and guts. As an aside, they designed the initial games and many others to get game players off those duffs and onto their feet, wildly slinging those Wii-motes through the air -- swatting tennis balls, slaying dragons and driving cars. The mass, mainstream consumer loved it, and so the age of Wii was born.
The Wii outsold both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 almost every month this year, much to the surprise (and delight) of Nintendo, and much to the surprise (and chagrin) of both Microsoft and Sony. Sony's PlayStation 3 was pretty much considered a bomb (probably due to the used-car price) back when Microsoft kept racking up Xbox 360 sales. But nothing could touch the Wii's sales prowess in 2007.
It just goes to show that engaging the consumer in a new and innovative fashion is way, way more important than adding a whole host of high-tech features to a new product and expecting to market that product based on those features. In a way, Nintendo took the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) approach to the consumer in 2007 with the Wii. What do you know -- it worked like a charm. A huge charm.

OMG. I love the Wii. My grandma loves it. My friends' kids love it. This thing is the must have, get off your ass gift of the century (or maybe at least the decade). Thanks for giving it love on your post! PS -- monkey balls and SXX are my two favorite games. Monkey balls has like 50 additional games in it and they are -- corny as it sounds -- fun for the whole family/something for everyone.

I love the wii. My grandma loves it. My friend's kids love it. It gets everyone involved, it gets people moving. It is great. I especially like the game "Monkey Balls" because there are like 50 games in one. Something for everyone, for sure. Easy to hard level games, great illustrations/graphics, etc.
Highly recommend it.

The Wii's price gives it the advantage of being in the gift range. If you look at the game attach rate of all three consoles you'll see that the X360 is easily slaughtering both the Wii and PS3. Nintendo is able to sell consoles because it's cheap however it's not selling software which means that people are buying them and not playing them. The Wii may sell the most consoles but Sony and Microsoft are going after customers who actually want to buy games, not casual gamers who have had Wii Sports since launch and haven't bought another game. It's not that the people aren't interested in the X360 and PS3, it's that they are still too expensive for the casual gamer.

On the comment about the games not selling as much for the Wii, the president of the U.S. Branch of Nintendo has said that they are making money on all aspects of Wii sales. That being said, once they sell a certain number of consoles, they've remade their losses for production and don't have to worry. Sony and Microsoft on the other hand are completly dependent on selling their games because they sell their systems at a loss. in addition, many of their games start out in the $60 range compared the Wii's $50 new released game price.

I agree. I'm a casual gamer, a 35 yr old father who after a year of owning a Wii is still interested in the active and social aspects of the system. I've only bought a couple of games and have a hard time paying $50 for any game. I'm not likely to spend many hours on a game, I just have too many interests and not enough time. My kids are too young to enjoy playing without my direction. So I keep the system and we play it now and then, and I may buy a game or two a year. I'd be more likely to by a game like Halo for $50. Many Nintendo games are still stuck in the rut of running through a level and defeating a boss. Yuck.

The biggest problem for me actually was where to find a Wii!!
My answer was this fantastic site http://wiialerts.com
I found out about this site on the fatwallet deal forum, and what a difference it made! I got cell alerts from this site, and have been able to pick up wiis for most of my family without a sweat.
Meanwhile I still see people standing in lines when I go to the mall and can't believe the difference. I've tried to tell as many people as I could about this site. This is why I love the internet.

My husband experienced the WII at our daughter and son-inlaws about a month ago and fell head over for it - He now has his own and is in professional bowling heaven.
Thanks Nintendo for getting him off of the couch and into action moving his body!!!!! I applaud the industry for giving our young people an alternative to just sitting in front of the boob tube.

Nintendo is no stranger to deceiving the public in order to create demand for a product. Since the wii is actually a repackaged gamecube with a controller gimmick that was planned for the cube but scrapped built in to it, they have been stockpiling these things for years before they came out. Just like Coleco's cabbage patch dolls in the 80's, when an item is thought to be in short supply, a frenzy of unwarranted demand is created for a product.

I own the Wii and I love it. I am not so interested in real life graphics I just love gameplay. I would much rather have 50 hours of game play and have pretty good graphics than 15 hours of game play with spectacular graphics. The only draw back to the Wii is that it is for children. They have no games for the adult gamer. This is where PS3 and Xbox 360 come in. Nintendo has cornered the children's market and PS3 and Xbox 360 have the adult gamers. I have bought an Xbox 360 for myself and I play that more than the Wii because there are more games suited for me and not just children like 100 titles of Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z or 100's of disney titles. Sorry Wii Your gameplay is great your innovative technology is awsome but your games selection suck for the more mature and adult gamer.

I have had a Wii since last Nov.
I had to wait in line overnight at the neighborhood Target to get it. I also have a Xbox 360. My wife and I play our Wii way more than our 360, there isn't much that I'm interested in playing on 360 right now and there hasn't been for several months, I play my Wii almost every day! It's not the price of the PS3 that's stopping me from getting one, there just isn't much that I'm interested in playing on it that hasn't also been released for the 360. There are LOTS of excellent games on the Wii besides Wii sports, more than that, everyone that I know that has a Wii have bought at least 5 more games for it. And not one of them are dissatisfied with their Wii or regret buying one. Sonic and the secret of the rings on Wii ROCKS!!! The new sonic games on both 360 and PS3 were horrible. Plus where else can you play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Nights...Etc.?

The Wii is a highly innovated game console, as the article describes, but nothing can really tell you how exciting it is then to actually play the game.
My favorite thing about the Wii is that you actually get up off of your butt and get into the game, literally. I also heard that soon Nintendo will soon come out with a little white board thing, that you can stand on and get your weight and BMI, and do excersises on! So, not only is it entertaining, but helpful for those trying to lose a few extra pounds for fitting into a bathing suit.
Hah, try to top that, Sony and Microsoft!

I just got my wii last week and love it. Not from the video game generation, I played this at the mall and was hooked. It is great workout played alone and my grandson also loves it. Finding one was hard and I just got lucky being at Walmart after the 1pm truck arrived carrying only 6. I do agree that Nintendo is holding back wii systems in order to creat more "want". We want what we can't get! Not a good moral move but a great game.

My mother and little sister won this at a raffle a few months ago. They both love it. When my children go to visit her they love it too. My children are getting on for Christmas this year. I choose the Wii over the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 because there are far more kind friendly games available for the Wii. The greatest majority of the xbox games were are not appropriate for children. Same for the PS3. Just about 100% of the games for the Wii I would allow my children to play. I love the fact the graphics are fun, simple and bright. This is a game system that appeals to all ages and backgrounds. Best of all I love that you have to move to use it. No more lazy couch potato video gamers! lol I was going to get my son a video game rocker chair, but then realized that 90% of the time, if he is playing the Wii he will not be sitting. He will be standing, jumping, swinging and throwing. I am pleased that this may be the first video game that can actually get a person in shape. How awesome is that, a video game that is actually good for your health! This American Mom gives the Wii by Nintendo two very enthusiastic thumbs up! It is the first video game that gets my Mother Seal of Approval. :)

I wasn't really in to video games until I got my wii in July after waiting a long time for the stores to get them back in after selling out. Some of the games are so ez my 16 month old son will "play" them more copy us. I also love that 4 people can play some of the games as well.

To the person who claims that software sales are poor on Wii: Yes, you're partially right... the 360 does have an edge on Wii when it comes to software. However, it is definitely outdoing the PS3's software sales, which rarely sees a notable game on the top ten sales charts. Wii, meanwhile, has had at least two or so games in the top ten since its release, with million sellers like Twilight Princess, Wii Play, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Wii Sports (in Japan), Super Mario Galaxy, and more. The fact of the matter is that Wii has successfully done what it set out to do for Nintendo, it has opened the market to new kinds of gamers and casuals. Yeah, as a big Nintendo fan I'm not all that thrilled about some craptacular party games coming to the system lately, but Nintendo does (for the most part) know what its doing and is stil managing to sell games to the audience that is attracted to the other consoles. I'm still waiting for Smash Bros...

Listen, anyone that thinks that a Wii can get you in shape is delusional, unless you're playing Dance Dance Revolution. Even then, going for a 30 minute jog is better than playing bowling for 12 hours. It is still definately the lesser of two evils though.
My roomate used to have one and I miss it. We now have an Xbox 360. I am a college student and the main difference with the Wii is the games are easy to pick up and play while having a few drinks with friends.
Girls came over and actually wanted to play it, instead of getting mad. Our neighbors setup an outdoor projector and they play it at parties. I think it's much better for social interaction.
