This post is part of our Hottest Products of 2007 feature. Also check out our other Hottest Products of 2007 posts and let us know which product you think is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Of all the items we selected for our Hottest Products of 2007 list, the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone is probably the one that best fits the description of a no-brainer. News of the combination phone, web browser, music and video player and digital assistant dominated the tech world for months before its release. When the company abruptly dropped the price for the Christmas season, the anger of early adopters who had paid full retail again dominated the news.
Now the company has rolled the same touch-screen tech that enthralled users of the iPhone into its newest iPods, effectively making competing brands look archaic by comparison.
The phone also represented another step in mainstreaming Apple's computing devices. In the last year, the company has experienced a sharp up-tick in sales of its laptop and desktop products, no doubt to many users who came through the iTunes/iPod/iPhone portals.
As the iPhone finds traction in Europe, China and other markets, it stands a good chance of being a Hottest Product in 2008 as well. The Apple magic continues. Rock on.
If you've had some experience with this product, let us know about it. Or if you know of something else that you think is one of the Hottest Products of 2007, feel free to tell us about that as well.

I love my I phone. Except....for the fact that I can't send a text to multiple people. That stinks. A flash would be great for my camera and of course being able t send a photo.

Leo and others, you can send a photo from the camera function! Love the iPhone! There are naysayers about battery life, but I can use mine all day with some iPod usage, and still have juice by the end of the day. Edge or Wi-Fi is sweet, works anywhere. I was a reluctant early adopter, but I have no regrets!

When in the states love my phone, but I´m in Spain right now, web browser locks up does not work correctly all the time and I just got bill for $1319.79 ($780.00 is data charges for something that would not work correctly 75% of the time) AT&T says tuff. So I am chaulking it up to a lessons learned, but beware!

How was it that your bill was so high? What type of plan do you have? My daughter is getting one and they quoted 3 plans, all were unlimited internet and a couple had limitations on texting, are there other charges I should be investigating? She's 16. Need to know.

Jean,
The outrageous bill Harry is currently paying off is from using his iPhone in europe. iPhone is a world phone, and is therefore capable of being used in pretty much every country world-wide, with the exception of Japan and Korea...they march to the beat of their own drummers there.
But, because you can use iPhone around the world, you are going to pay "roaming" fees out the wazoo anytime you make a call, send an email, surf the web, etc. when youʻre not in the US (Iʻm assuming that youʻre in the US, but correct me if Iʻm wrong) Being that iPhone is such a web-centric device, pretty much every application on it requires some sort of need to communicate with the internet. All those bits add up and are compounded by AT&T AND the carrierʻs network youʻre using charging you for using the phone in europe, in addition to international taxes and levies applied to foreign data useage. All in all, everyone gets a piece of the pie, except for you, and you end up paying the bill....at $15-$30 a webpage or google map. Not very fun.
To say that iPhone is the only phone that has this problem would, however, be misleading. Any phone you use in europe can just as easily rack up charges just as substantial as Harryʻs. The great thing about the iphone is that you do have the option to turn off your connection to the internet if you do happen to roam in, say mexico or canada, at some point. Harry kinda did it to himself, unfortunately.
But the things you should consider if you are purchasing for a teen are:
a decent texting plan-
200 texts a month for a 16 year old? forget about it! Iʻm 26, and i can go through 500 texts in a month, easy. Expect her to be able to double that. In the first 3 months of my plan, i just stuck with the 200 that came with the plan. But I would go through that allotment in about a week or so and would end up getting charged $.05/message. At then end of the month, Iʻd have an additional $20 tacked on to my bill that I didnʻt anticipate paying when I signed on. I sort of nipped it in the butt and got an additional 1200 messages for $10/month. Now I know what Iʻm paying each month, and I have messages to spare. Its still more than I expected to pay, but itʻs defiantly the lesser of two evils.
a good, sturdy case-
Ive already gone through one iPhone! My first iPhone didnʻt have a case and broke on its 13th day out of the box, ouch! I think itʻs because I didnʻt have a case when it slipped from my lap and onto the floor. Luckily, appleʻs warrantees are pretty lenient with their mobile devices and they sent me a new phone. But I learned my lesson the first time around...itʻs been case bound in heavy plastic ever since.
screen covers-
If your case doesnʻt have a built in screen cover, I would suggest getting one. The glass isnʻt nearly as scratch-proof as Apple would want you to believe. Theyʻre relatively inexpensive at walmart. No more than $3/cover. Stay away from covers @ the apple store, theyʻll unfortunately rip you off.
Apple Care (optional)-
I would also consider getting the extended warranty, it will cover you for an additional year of genius bar (appleʻs in-store repair techs), parts, and labor. At $69, itʻs kind of a good deal. The cost of replacing the battery alone costs more than the warranty extension. The great thing about apple is that you can also put off buying the extended warranty up until a year after you first purchase your iPhone, but after the year is up, youʻll have to pay out of pocket to get repairs done. I defiantly got apple care after my first iPhone broke! The piece of mind is reassuring to say the least.
Good luck with your iPhone purchase, itʻs a great phone and your daughter will LOVE it. I hope I was able to address any concerns you had.
Aloha!

Recently my iphone bill was well over $1500 through MUCH persistence i was able to get a $950 credit. Just remember that ATT documents EVERYTHING that you say on there systems so choose your words carefully.

I was all set to get one when the price went down only to find out that it doesn't do stereo bluetooth. Huh? A device as sophisticated as the iPhone doesn't do something that my little Samsung can do? So I waited until the software update and still no stereo! Listening to music is a large part of what I use my phone for so I guess I'll just wait. What's frustrating is that I cannot find anyone to tell me when this feature might be added.

I think Apple makes cool products, but the repair costs are outrageous! Look at the iPhone, the battery is not even user replaceable.
I started creating video tutorials on fixing iPods for this reason, so that users can replace batteries and screens for a fraction of the price. I learned to do this myself and now offer the info to others.

I've been debating whether or not to buy the iphone.
It seems pretty cool,
but I still think it lacks a few functions.
I know that there are apps that you can
download onto it.
But I wouldn't want to do that.
I think I'm just going to wait and
see whats coming next for ipod.

I purchased the iPhone as soon as I could scrounge up the cash. (Yep, I paid retail before the price drop, silly me.) This is consistently the best piece of tech I have ever owned. A site that I found that helps me out a lot both with my iPhone and my Mac comps, is

I love this phone!!! It is the best I've ever had! The Internet works everywhere and my battery lasts a very long time. I am on my phone right now and the keyboard is really easy to operate. If anybody is looking for a good case to protect it, get the agent 18 clear plastic case from the apple store, and also the clear film cover to go over the screen, to prevent scratches.
