In our quest to keep you up to date on the evolving language of business, here are some new terms it might behoove you to know:
- Alcopop - Hard lemonade and drinks of that ilk that are marketed like beer, but taste more like soft drinks. Training drinks for those entering their drinking years.
- Bangalored - One whose job has been outsourced to India is said to have been Bangalored.
- Business theater- Bringing theatrics to business presentations, especially at trade shows. For companies who find decolletage doesn't work for them any more.
- Caffenol - Drinks combing alcohol and caffeine, producing wide-awake drunks.
- Dental Spa - Combines root canals with massage, aromatherapy, etc. A California invention; are you surprised?
- Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity - Some claim to experience physical problems from the flow of electricity. Look for the first EH-specializing personal injury attorneys coming to your late-night television soon.
- Fat tax (aka Twinkie Tax) - The growing movement to impose additional tax on foods/drinks that contribute to obesity and other health problems. If increasing taxes on tobacco results in a sharp drop in smoking (and smoking-related tax revenues) look for states to turn to a Twinkie tax to replace the lost income.
- Glamping - Glamour camping. No icky spiders, chili mac, or peeing in the woods for the glamping crowd. Think Jeeves toasting your Dean & Deluca marshmallow to perfection as you relax with a chilled Chardonnay in your portable hot tub, roughing it amidst the splendor of the Tetons.
- Grocerant - The blending of grocery stores and restaurants. A similar term I've coined is Grocergarten, grocery stores that seem to be used as kindergartens, as gauged by the number of youngsters wandering like baby ducks behind weekday, mid-morning shoppers.
