Best & Worst of 2007: Hottest cars of the year

This post is part of AOL Money & Finance's Best & Worst of 2007. Voting has now closed and readers have chosen the Cadillac CTS as the hottest automobile of the year. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you are pleased with this result.

Hottest cars of the year What is it about a car that makes it "hot" for you? Is it slinky lines, European styling and a deep throaty growl? Perhaps you prefer a ride with all the luxury appointments: leather, navigation, DVD players, and surround sound. Are you the kind of driver that seeks out a pavement-ripping roadster with more horsepower per pound than a F-1 formula racer, or are you more into the touring feel? Whatever your criteria for choosing a hot car, we're asking for your opinions on the following four vehicles, and we like to know which one you'd choose as Hottest Car of the Year for 2007.

There is a bit of a shuffle these days in regard to when manufacturers release their year models, so for comparison I am using what I believe is the latest available production model for each of the four competitors. Please feel free to consider more than just one model year as you make your judgment. I want to know which vehicle make and model you think owns the road.

The Cadillac CTS received strong positive reviews for model year 2007,and things seem to have moved up a notch for 2008. With the addition of a 24-valve, direct fuel injection V-6, it would appear that General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) wants the CTS to mix it up with some even bigger dogs. The all-wheel-drive system available for the CTS keeps getting strong marks from expert auto reviewers and It's a recommended option due to the increased safety and aggressiveness the system provides. The CTS also enjoys the distinction of being the only American luxury car still available with a manual transmission. Currently, the Cadillac CTS comes with a standard features package that includes more than 30 power-assist, convenience, and safety features, as well as XM satellite radio, OnStar with turn-by-turn navigation, and a Bose eight-speaker sound system with CD, MP3, and auxiliary capability.

The Buick Enclave is totally new from GM for 2008. The coming of Enclave was long anticipated and finally laid to rest the model lines of the Rainier sport utility, the Terraza minivan, and the Rendezvous family utility vehicle. Auspiciously built upon a truck platform, the Enclave seeks to bring Buick's rich touring car history into line with today's highly demanding vehicle landscape. Enclave seeks to define exactly what the term "crossover" will mean, and I believe that Buick has now set the crossover bar quite high.

A wide and high SUV type stance couples with unibody construction and rigorous noise abatement details to provide an interior environment that has been described as "very, very quiet." Safety features that come standard with Buick Enclave include OnStar emergency communications (with turn-by-turn navigation), anti-lock brakes, traction control, and StabiliTrak electronic stability control. You can dress your Enclave with a nice selection of available options packages and then add any of a host of extras ala carte.

The BMW M3 can only help to make any car comparison complete. BMW's 3 series sedans have been impressive performance cars for quite some time and 2006 marked the car's fifth generation. However, driving enthusiasts are becoming slightly concerned that BMW is beginning to take some of the car's road character out of the hands of the driver and into the lap of technology. For now, the M3s in hand still retain the well-established looks, feel, and experience that driving purists have come to expect from these finely engineered cars.

Expert auto reviewers urge buyers who truly thrive on road feel to use caution when considering the inclusion of the M3's new Active Steering option in their BMW M3 purchase. Those same reviewers do however, recognize the value of BMW steering and braking technologies for the rest of us "normal" drivers. Embodied in the 3 sedan series, BMW seeks to build upon the best of its existing performance car platform by employing cutting edge technology nestled snugly within refined performance engineering.

The Honda Accord might be our surprise entrant in this year's hottest car contest. As I wrote at the beginning, the point of this poll is to see what you think is "hot." While the Accord by Honda Motor Co. (NYSE: HMC) might not reasonably approach the other entrants in regard to history, luxury, or power, the Accord holds out two features these other vehicles do not. I ask you, do the fact that Honda Accords can be had for under $20,000 and that they can give you 30 mpg make you consider the car hot? Some people might find these traits to be positively steamy.

The Honda Accord is a cultivated car, brought slowly from small car status into the world of four-door sedans. The 2008 Accord is now considered by regulators to be a mid-size sedan, and it has migrated to the EPA's large car segment. You won't be comparing an Accord to a Lexus any time soon, but experts say that you will be comparing the 2008 Accord against cars in a class with Camry, Maxima, Malibu, and Passat. The 2008 Honda Accord is a sleek, efficient presentation that comes with many of the little extras you might hope for. Frankly, just based on visual appeal, I think the Accord is the sexiest one of the bunch.
