This post was part of AOL Money & Finance's Best & Worst of 2007 feature. Voting has now closed and readers have chosen Oprah Winfrey as the most overpaid celebrity of the year. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you are pleased with this result.
Oprah Winfrey returns to our Most Overpaid Celebrity category after having lost the title to Paris Hilton last year. For 2007 she is joined by overpaid celebrities Madonna, George Lopez, and Russell Crowe.
Winfrey, Madonna, and Lopez all made the Forbes Celebrity 100, a ranking of Hollywood players by pay, influence, and popularity. Winfrey, of course, comes in at number one, both in terms of pay and power. Madonna's earnings placed her at number nine on the list, while Lopez came in at number fifty-one.
Forbes estimates Winfrey's earnings at $260 million last year, and her net worth in the area of $1.5 billion, making her the nation's wealthiest African American. She'll be adding two new reality shows to her media empire, which already includes a blockbuster daytime talk show, satellite radio show, magazine, and Broadway musical, as well as stakes in hit shows by Dr. Phil McGraw and Rachael Ray. The school for girls she founded in South Africa has drawn much media attention this year, and she's recently endorsed Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Winfrey has been called the world's most powerful woman, the most influential woman in the world, one of the most influential persons of the 20th century, the world's first black woman billionaire, and the greatest pop culture icon of all time. Can any mortal person live up to all that hype?
Forbes estimates Madonna's earnings at $72 million. According to both the 2007 Guinness Book of Records and Billboard, she is the richest female singer in the world, as well as one of the richest self-made women in the world, with an estimated net worth of more than $850 million. In October, Madonna announced she would not renew her recording contract with Warner Music Group, where she's been for her entire career, and had entered a $120 million, ten-year deal with concert promoter Live Nation Inc. A brave move by a visionary who recognizes the waning influence of recording companies, or a move borne of desperation by a performer past her prime? Time will tell.
Forbes estimates George Lopez's earnings last year at $26 million. When his eponymous sitcom, which he also wrote, produced, and co-created along with movie star Sandra Bullock, was canceled in May, the actor and comedian suggested that race might have been a factor in ABC's decision. Still, he scored an estimated $15 million from a syndication deal for the show. Lopez remains popular on the stand-up circuit, selling $9 million in tickets last year, and he has several big screen projects in the works, alongside the likes of Kevin Costner, Andy Garcia, and Luke Wilson. Lopez also hosts the PGA's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament.
Though movie star and bad boy Russell Crowe didn't make the Celebrity 100 this year, he did end up on a different Forbes list. The Ultimate Star Payback list ranks movie stars by how much bang for the buck they deliver. At the very bottom of the list was Russell Crowe. His recent films have earned on average only about $5 in gross income for every dollar spent on Crowe's salary (compared to $29 for Matt Damon, who topped the list). Crowe's film A Good Year was made for $35 million, about a third of which went to Crowe, but it earned only $40 million in worldwide box office. His most recent films, 3:10 from Yuma and American Gangster, have fared better at the box office; maybe Crowe won't come in at the bottom of the Ultimate Star Payback list next year.
So for 2007, did Russell Crowe deliver the least bang for the buck, or were Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, or George Lopez the most overpaid celebrity of the year? What do you think?

Why on earth do any of us care what other people make? Is there not enough going on in the world today that warrants real concern - the responsibility is on each of us to create positive change for all of our fellow human beings. These people are simply entertainers, no more and no less. There job is to entertain and they appear to do it well.

I firmly believe that Oprah should stick to entertainment and keep out of politics.
I for one don't believe she has talent anyway and just have a very hard time understanding what her public appeal is really all about.

When they say that ignorance is bliss, they surely were speaking of you. It's obvious that you are jealous of a very successful black woman who has made it on her own. And you are a racist as well. I find it very humorous that you referred to Oprah and Whoopie as nappy headed. So what? How does that demean them or their character by speaking of the texture of their hair? It clearly doesn't. When ignorant people like you, who do not have anything substantive to offer, they resort to insults (or think they are insulting someone) out of sheer hatred in their hearts. Oprah has shown her generosity to many people (black people as well as white people) in this country as well, often not publicized. And exactly what have you done for others? You don't have to be a billionaire to help other people who are less foturnate than you are. Try it sometime, before you open your mouth.

WHAT!!!! Right what are these people doing with this kind of money when there are starving people(in theUSA Oprah). And someone had the nerve to compare this people to teachers getting paid less. Like teachers do anymore-how many days they have off with pay?! ?What about the police the firefighters people who put in overtime and their lives on the line!!! And for that racist person you all think is just wonderful is stupid. If you all can't see her racist actions and her selfishness then you are stupid too. She doesn't deserve to make that much!! The productors and the companies who pay this are just as bad. There are reasons she didnt get married or have kids with all that money and the money she gave to the Africa kids (like blacks are the only ones that need help) ( like there are no American kids needing a home(tell Angelina Jolie too)) well what kind of tax write off is that??!!!!!! STupid Stupid People!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oprah does good things in her life. She can choose what ever she wants to do with her money. I do notice she has twice as many blacks on her show than whites. It is her show and she is the boss. I do despise the phrases african american, latino/hispanic. Any one born in America of african heritage is either colored or negro. If your born in African you are african. If born in Mexico your a Mexican not latino. If born in Cuba or Puerto Rico your Cuban or Puerto Rican This latino/hispanic phrase is so over used and incorrectly used I feel like barfing when i hear it used.

I'm not an Opah fan and I only started watching her show since 2007 occasionally, but I must tell you that I think she deserves all the money she makes just for seeing the big picture that's the reward you get when you do unto others as you would like them to do unto you. She has the right to put her money wisely anywhere she sees fit; Africa is a continent that is bigger than the United States with its own set of unique problems. In her travels to Africa she's seen promise, and being the wise and compassionate person that she is has chosen to develop that promise.Jewish people help Israeli causes, Irish people help Irish causes,Italian the same; helping Africans to help themselves goes a long way; academia is a great start that could benefit America which as yet to see the full potential of Africa's interlectual community. She's an African; some three hundred plus years removed by way of the America that constantly reminds her of her place of color. I only hope Oprah, Magic Johnson and Bill Cosby will inspire other prominent African Americans like Michael Jordan,Eddie Murphy,Bob Johnson,P.Diddy,Jay Z and Damon Dash to fill the gaps in her wake. She has helped a lot of American causes too by coming to Spike Lee's aid during the post production of "Malcolm X" and by green lighting some black film productions; keeping black actors in work not to mention anonymous work she has done. Oprah Winfrey, New York's mayor Michael Bloomburg are some of the few people of wealth who has their philanthropic integrity in order.I think for your of vision and heart you probably are underpaid 'cause you need more money to heal all these wounds. God bless you Oprah because if not you; who?

I can see why this country is so divided!
All it takes is for someone to conduct a stupid survey, and prints the result in a context that stirs emotions and VOILA: you have yourself some controversy for people to fight over. I bet with you if the question was phrased as follows: Who is the highest paid entertainer in the world Or Who is the highest overpaid person in America, there won't be some much stirred emotions.
Why? Overpayment mixing with the word entertainment constitutes the right blend for controversy. Overpayment is subjective, or rather relative, it depends who is getting paid and for what.
Anyway, what saddens me more is how in this country the media, and those working for the power that be, know what buttons to push so we can remain divided and ignore who our true enemies are. Here we are, living in the "richest" country in the world, and yet by some estimates 50 million people are not medically insured, and even those that think they are, sometimes find out they are NOT in the worst possible way and time -- when they confront with a serious illness that requires serious medical attention and serious disbursements from their insurance companies. Meanwhile, our tax-payers' money has been transferred to the hands of a few through various means: whether it be through tax-cuts or through some phony wars or by avoiding taxes through the creation of some phony corporations overseas. And yet, we do what we do best: fighting each other over stupidities, this time it is on "overpaid" celebrities.
Last year if I recall very well, top executives from various corporations like EXXON mobile, JP Morgan just to cite a few received billions of dollars in bonus. What have those corporations done for us besides stealing our money or polluting the planet? Because of their misdeeds, we don't even know if our grand kids will have a chance to enjoy this planet. At least Miss Oprah tries to inspire all of us to do better for ourselves and others even though I am not a big fan of her "favorite things". But so what! Now other talk shows are imitating her, they are giving away things as well. Have looked at the View lately?
Before I leave, I have another question, hopefully someone can give an intelligent answer. Please no stupid cliches!
Why is it in this country, white folks, especially poor white folks, are so angry at other groups when they feel things are not going their way? The Indians or Chinese didn't come here and drop a bomb on us so we can ship our jobs overseas. Those poor Mexicans crossing the border are here in search of a better life. Thanks to them our grass are kept clean, our tomatoes are picked up. The African-Americans don't control the corporations of this country, they don't send our kids to wars, well maybe one if you want to count Miss Condi as a major player. Why are those groups the alternate targets of angry whites folks? Can someone explain that to me? If poor whites in this country were to take a few minutes and think they would see who their enemies truly are and would stop making remarks to spur hatred.
Some food for thought

Oprah's contributions to charity is like me pitching a quarter into the Salvation Army's tin cup. Nobody admires Opra like Opra does. She is full of herself. Am tired of her shoving black people down our throats. Try not to forget the people what "brung" you.

There is nothing wrong with Oprah helping people. I am glad she is well paid, because she gives a lot of it back. There is also nothing wrong with people making as much as they can in this country. The only problem I see is that so many are willing to do nothing and let the government, IE taxes pay their way.

I am surprised so many resent Oprah helping people outside the US. I am sure she is assessing where the most need is. People born in this county have every opportunity -- such as she had to become what she is today after being born a black woman in poverty! I am sure she knows the more money she makes the more good she can do! I applaud her!!
