Rather than rehash all the classics that every investor worth his or her salt has read, I'm going to give a list of a few of my favorite investment books that are either new but not bestsellers or long and forgotten. Click on the title for my review:
R. Foster Winans' Trading Secrets: This is a richly-written morality tale of sorts about the insider trading scandal that ruined Winans' career.
Alan Murray's Revolt in the Boardroom: This underrated book explores the shifts in the power structure of corporate America. The days of the imperial CEO are over, and shareholders are demanding that directors play a more active role. Murray looks at what caused this change, and what it means for investors.
Chainsaw: The Notorious Career of Al Dunlap: Veteran reporter John A. Byrne look at Al Dunlap's "turnaround" of Sunbeam that ultimately led to the company's bankruptcy, and a slew of lawsuits accusing Dunlap and company of securities fraud -- Dunlap settled the SEC's charges by agreeing to a lifetime ban from serving as an officer or director of a company. He probably got off easy, but this book provides some important messages about the importance of skepticism in investing.
The Funny Money Game: Before Andrew Tobias gained fame forThe Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, he worked at National Student Marketing, a high-flying conglomerate that imploded amid allegations of shady doings. This wonderful little book, tragically out of print, was one of the few good things to come out of that mess.
Great Business Disasters: Published by the Playboy Press in 1973, this anthology of top-notch business journalism explores schemes, scams, swindles, and more innocent screw-ups.
Order one of these for the investment nerd in your life!
