Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), the world's largest retailer, will be donating 3 million meals (value: $1 million) to America's Second Harvest (ASH). ASH is the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S., and with such a large donation, it's great to hear Wal-Mart contributing to those less fortunate as a response to the nationwide shortage in food banks this month.Wal-Mart will deliver 50 food-filled trucks to each state in the U.S. with an equal share of the 3 million donated meals, which will comprise the main portion of the retailer's donation. As a kudos to Wal-Mart, it was listed as being the first corporation to respond to ASH's call to action based on a national food shortage in food banks all over the U.S. To ensure those in need at least have a holiday meal to enjoy, Wal-Mart's donation will supply 25% of the 12 million meals the ASH says are needed. Meals will include grocery items like macaroni and cheese, oatmeal, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti pasta and sauce, corn, beans and potatoes.
Will Wal-Mart win some positive PR by getting all these food donations in place within every U.S. state by next Tuesday -- Christmas Day? Most likely, yes. In a year that saw the giant retailer fend off sharp arrows from just about every critic it has, all that needs to be put aside to recognize the latitude of this kind of corporate giving. To other retailers that have not yet responded: Wal-Mart has set the bar for you. Let's see other food retailers measure up during the remainder of this week.

Walmart does many great things that they don't receive credit for. No, I am not an employee. They give jobs to so many people with disabilities when no one else would consider them. They are always there when needed....they were the first to donate water and food during Katrina.
Keep up the good work Walmart. Just because you've accomplished the American dream without a "union" you don't deserve the bad press you get.

You are right, Nancy! Good for them. WalMart isn't exactly my favorite store (bad pay to workers in factories overseas), but I certainly don't reject their effort to give others good Christmas dinners. A lot less people probably go hungry in the United States thanks to America's Second Harvest. Sounds like a good, worthwhile cause.

I am the Walmart employee who is responsible for the Community Involvement at our store. I give away thousands of dollars a month to local organizations and never ask or get pubicity for it. I have shopped for children that would not have a Christmas except for the charity of our store. I have given food, clothing and gift cards to families that have been displaced by fire, flood, or disaster. My store and EVERY SINGLE Walmart in the WORLD does this every day with no recognition, and I am blessed that I am able to get a paycheck to do a job that makes me feel like I make a difference. I am not the world's biggest cheerleader for the company that I work for, but I think that credit should be given where credit is due. It is so easy to believe the negative, and so easy to shut out the positive about this company, and that is a shame. I think what people do not remember about Walmart is that is IS a business, and just like every other business in the world, it wants to make a profit. However, it is easier to see it as the giant monster who swallows up everything good in a community. I think that if you asked the thousands of organizations that Walmart Foundation has helped, and the thousands of local families that it has given to, they might make some people re-think the image.

I'm not an employee but our small city had the Safe Ways, Alberson's, etc., before Walmart arrived. They're prices were always high, even against each other. After Walmart came to town, what a surprise, all they're prices dropped 20-30% to try competing with Walmart which tells me they have been cheating the people in my town for years.

Ignorance is bliss huh? All of Walmart's employees have benefits...even part timers. Other companies followed suit AFTER Walmart gave it's part timers benefits. No I am not an employee. I just find it sad that people want to destroy what they don't understand.

Mall-Mart doesn't do anything that does not benefit them. They are just trying to change their image while still screwing employees, the environment and the taxpayers that subsidize a $10 billion a year corp.

While Wal-Mart may give to charities, they still DO NOT take care of their customers! I purchased a video game for my daughter for Christmas (her only "toy", the rest of the gifts are clothes and shoes), I had to check out in electronics and had quite alot of other items. When I got home, I could not find the video game anywhere, I called the store and told them to check the counter as the cashier had set the game to the side while he rang up everything else and there is not alot of room in that checkout area! I called the store and was pretty much told too bad, and I should have checked before I left the store! I don't make it a habit to go through my bags while I am at the store, I take for granted that what I pay for is given to me! I fuss about high dollar stores like Hollister and American Eagle, but while they are expensive sometimes, I am treated like they apprecitat me spending my money there, and if there is a problem, they go out of their way to help!

Wal-Mart povides cheap prices fpr shoppers who would otherwise go without all year long. They don't produce the products but they reduce the middleman cost. Retailers have never paid a high wage and almost never offer benefits. Wal-Mart pays higher than average in towns across America yet they are bashed from the left and there competators chime in. God love them for it!

What rock have you been hiding under the past few years? Go to any "Mom & Pop", department, mall, hardware store, etc and try to find anything of worth made in the USA. Unless it's handcrafted by locals, you'll have a very hard time. This is not just limited to Wal Mart.
I work for a U.S. manufacturing company who is outsourcing more and more every year. Cheaper labor, yes, but our company does NOT pass their savings on to consumers. I suspect this is a common practice with other U.S. "manufacturers"as well.
On another note:
It seems the local Home Depot's and Lowes have put alot of our small hardware stores out of business. Why aren't people crying about this? Same thing if you ask me. Are the home centers treating/paying their employees so wonderfully?Or, do we have the double standard thing going on here?

Actually deary, Wal-Mart has a very nice policy regarding people of the "weird alternative lifestyle". Yes indeed, Wal-Mart has included orientation in its non-discrimination policies. Poor deluded you.

I don't know much about Walmarts views on Christianity, but I for one am sick of their political correctness. When I am leaving the store they wish me "Seasons Greetings", so not to be offensive to people who do not celebrate the birth of Jesus. Where did "Merry Christmas" go? I do not put up a 'holiday' tree, and 'holiday' lights, I put up CHRISTMAS lights and a CHRISTMAS tree. Get over yourselves people!!!!!! We have freedom of speech here, use it!!!!!
