Some people will go out of their way to avoid using Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows operating system. If you look around carefully enough, you can escape the "Microsoft tax" and get a PC for a lower price. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) already sells PCs that don't use Windows, and it's about to add a laptop PC to the mix.
The world's largest retailer will begin selling an ultra-light, two-pound laptop PC in a few weeks. Made by Everex, it comes with gobs of Google, Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) applications and links to online services pre-installed. These services include Google Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google News, Google Maps and YouTube. There are so many links to Google's online content that the laptop is already being referred to as containing the "Google operating system."
Is this the first shot by Google in a war with Microsoft's Windows operating system? Possibly, but not on Google's part. Everex is using cheaper components like a processor from Taiwan's VIA and a free operating system known as Ubuntu Linux for the new product, which will be priced at $399. Too bad -- that's probably not low enough, considering how relatively weak the new laptop is. Spend about $50 to $100 more, and you can get a fully-featured Windows laptop with much more powerful performance.
But then again, that's not the market this new laptop PC is gunning for. Looking at the Everex product, the target market for this VIA-powered ultra-portable seems to be beginners, enthusiasts and road warriors more concerned with weight, size and price rather than overall performance.

Susan, there is a new email only contraption out called the Prestege Printer. You can not only send/receive emails but this thing allows you to see attatchments such as photos. There is a $10/month fee to hook up to their service. I saw it on a 1/2 hour infomercial and they do have a website. I can't find it now but if you type in the name Prestiege Printer it should come up. It was made for older people who are intimidated by computers.

I'm sorry but Walmart does sell other computers as well. (HP, Dell, Sony) I just saw a nice Dell bundle there for under $500. My daughter has a Dell from Dell.com and I have a Sony from walmart that I've had over 7 yrs. Hers is a pathetic, slow , waste of money. I'm sure the majority of users for this product just want to use it to surf the web, get email and chat with family/friends.

EVEREX sells CRAP! their customer support is even worse than their product! I NEVER got my rebate on my hunk of junk even though I wrote them twice- my cursor jumps all over the place when I type, the touchpad patch doesn't work and their email support stopped replying to me on the second email I sent!!! don't waste your money on anything EVEREX!

Windows Vista home premium is what is as messed up as a soup sandwich. I have two Dells, a laptop and a desktop for sale CHEAP. I can't get help from Microsoft nor Dell. They both know that there is a problem with the hardware and keep passing the issue from one to the other.

Forget about this new Everex garbage...
The hottests affordbale computer on the market is the Asus Eee which sells anywhere from $299 to $499. It is solid state and buitl like a truck. Owners report dropping this on a concrete floor and still have the unit work, intact.
I bought my teen daughter one of the "baby laptops" for Christmas--she was begging for a MacBook, although she currently uses a Sony Vaio laptop--and she LOVES the Asus Eee.
It works on Linux so it is super fast (no Windows chugging a bunch of software) and it is so portable, at just 6" x 9" x 1" thick. She can pack it in her pocketbook and take it wherever she goes. And with a super-poweful built-in wireless card it picks up signals that my laptop can't!
Skip WalMart and save yourself money, time, and frustration.

i use windows and ubuntu on the same laptop ("dual boot"). ubuntu is faster and more robust than windows.
it works better.
it has fewer applications so you could say it is "less powerful".
but in terms of pure speed, reliability, and other technical factors it is purely better.
windows is decent, but unreliable, slows down and is downright annoying. but it runs the most apps

Why does everyone keep knocking Wal-Mart? A person pays exactly for what they get. If you buy one Cadillac, it costs in the neighborhood of $60K. But, if you buy a thousand, they probably will cost in the neighborhood of $30K. Get the idea? Buy in volume and pay less. I see an item of what is the best quality (name brands) on the market in the militlary exchanges and the same identical product on a Wally-World shelf, so do not be so hasty in declaring Wally's product as inferior. I agree that some products are made from small manufactuing defects but overall the entire item carries the manufacturers name, etc. so it stands to reason that to maintain their good "name" nothing is deliberately made as to be inferior just so it can be sold at 1/10th the regular price. When Wally places an order it for thousands and thousands for all their stores, so, they get a good product for much less than a Macy's, etc.... Sure, I do not dispute the fact that Wally buys "cheep" stuff. No, let me clear this up. I am not a "died-in-the-wool faithful Wally buyer. Yes, I go there as well as to the more expensive stores....but the choice is strictly mine. Therefore, if I do not like an item, if the price seems out of proportion to what I would expect to pay, I simply don't buy. So, please, stop being so negatively critical. No one twists an arm and leg to force a product on anyone. These is strictly my own personal opinion.....so don't come back and blast me.....
Take the food stores, such as Food-4-less. Their products are of the best quality but they can afford to sell "4-less" simply by having customers bag their own merchandise......a typical example.
Thanks for not asking......ok?

Reminds me of when I was a small lad growing up on a farm in Florida. My dad made a hundred thousand dollars by sending out an ad telling people for just one dollar how to write without using a pen. He gots loads of dollars and in return he sent back: "Use a pencil!". Worked for him, might work as you recommended....Good humor!!1
