I know I'm not the only one who's complained that Starbucks baristas don't know how to make a decent latte any more. Far from its roots as the reliable place to get coffee made exactly right, the chain has lately become famous for its automatic machines and the hit-or-miss quality of its products.Howard Schultz is here to change all that: by shutting down Every Last Store nationwide for three hours on Tuesday, February 26. Starting at 5:30 p.m., baristas in the coffee giant's 7,100 stores will learn how to do things better. They'll learn how to make a perfect shot, how to steam milk, and (if we have anything to say about it) how not to burn coffee, and how to wipe the milk steamer before switching from dairy to soy milk. (Vegans everywhere will say thank you.)
While it's doubtful that three hours of training will reverse years of gathering mediocrity, it's certainly a symbol of a company that cares about quality. If Howard is serious about this change stuff (and it's obvious that he is), he'll consider switching back to manual latte machines, at least in some stores located in serious coffee markets (like certain neighborhoods in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco). Speed and convenience is no price to pay for really good coffee. Some customers will agree; others will probably mutter swearwords under their breath as they pull up to their local Starbucks only to find it Closed For Training in a couple of weeks. Which customer are you?

Big woop! Starbucks has been overlooked and overshadowed by better coffee houses like Ancora, Victor Allens and Caribou. When I think "good cup of joe", Starbucks never even crosses my mind. 3 hours of training = in one ear, out the other. Who manages these stores?

3 hours does not make good trraining session, more like 3-5 days of repeating the same funtions over again makes for change.
But on tuesday of this week I bought a starbucks iced coffee at a new location, and took 1 sip and sent it to the bins. A waste of $2.65 &tax.
Dunkin you are the KING

I am all for going back to manual latte machines!!!! The taste was MUCH better! I even wrote them a letter about it. Of course, to no avail - but I tried.

Over the holidays I splurged for one of the egg nog lattes while out doing Christmas shopping. In the past it was if you brought your own travel mug you could save 10% on your drink. Imagine my shock when I was told it was only a 10 CENT savings. I still got the drink but now I remember why I dont go there as often as I used to. I will go to Circle K or AM/PM to get my coffee. I can fill my travel mug (20 oz) for about $1.07 and this includes adding things like vanilla syrup and vanillia creamer, having a choice of flavored coffee etc. AM/PM is like the BP's out east with lots of flavored coffee choices and flavored syrups and creamers to add to your coffee. So even though that within walking distance of my house I have a Starbucks, a CircleK and an AM/PM the Starbucks is now only for a splurge given the prices they are now charging, as well as how long it takes to even get my drink.

To Alexia who said that it was a lie that Starbucks does not support the troops: get your facts straight. It is not a lie. A friend's husband who was in Iraq told us that his buddy over there wrote to Starbucks to see if they could get some over there, and that is the response he got. From the president of Starbucks himself, according to the letter. I will miss my Mocha Frappuccinos and lattes, but my husband is a soldier recently returned from Iraq and until Starbucks reverses that decision and apologizes, I will not even consider going there.

Maybe it is not the mediocracy but lack of support for our troops. All of us at the office agree and have boycotted your chain due to your lack of patriotism. I am sure McDonalds coffee differs from one store to another because of different water in thier stores. They do however support Americans reguardless of a persons occupation.(ie: pilots in Air Force) Honestly!

This is good.I agree that the quality has gone down. Also thank you would be nice. I know every store has it regulars but serving them before the next person is wrong.I think the company as a whole should review good customer service.Manual latte's are much better, let them do a little work for a change and less socializing with the help and the regulars that hang around and don't have a life.

They were never trained right, even when they were trained right. Somebody from senior management needs to take a trip to Italy and visit a few good coffee bars. Starbuck's doesn't come close to good coffee or have a single descent barrista.

Hmmm...out of 155,000 plus Starbucks partners there isn't one decent barista?? Wow, I'm impressed that you've been able to have each one of them make you a cup of coffee for you to know this. What doesn't surprise me is that such a dumb comment came from someone who cannot even spell "decent" or "barista". If you don't like the coffee fine, don't drink it, but don't say such dumb things.

I buy a Venti, Whole Milk, No Water Chai every morning. But buy the time I get to work my milk has settled 2 inches down from the top. I've made numerous complaints but nothing ever changes. Also, since the standard is no longer whole milk, 3 out of 7mornings they are out of whole milk. Very discouraging when your paying $4.30 for a cup of tea.

Ok, here goes my comment out to Starbucks. I am a fan, buy your coffee, buy your drinks. For the past 2 years quality has been going downhill rapidly. Not only are the lattes lousy now, but the coffee I purchase to use at home is very stale. I want a place to get GOOD coffee ALL of the time!
PLEASE make sure the whole beans I purchase are fresh. I dont want better packaging, I want fresher coffee. The automatic expresso machines were a big mistake. I returned the first one I purchased and asked for a new one. Unfortunately, it was just as bad. The word from the manager was that they had just installed the new machines and it changed the flavor slightly. I understand the need to protect employees from injury by repetitive motion, but lately I have considered changing coffee companies. I just want a good latte and FRESH coffee beans. CAN YOU DO IT?
fresh beans. Can YOU do it?
