LAST YEAR MY WIFE AND I TRIED TO BOOK A RENO TO LONDON FLIGHT USING OUR DELTA SKY MILES. I CALLED ON THE EXACT HOUR 331 DAYS OUT FROM OUR DEPARTURE DATE. GUESS WHAT? SEATS TO LONDON WERE OK, BUT THE RETURN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. WE WERE PUT ON A WAITING LIST FOR 8 MONTHS TIL I FINALLY GAVE UP. THE SLAP WAS THEY WANTED $5O TO REINSTATE THE MILEAGE ALREADY SUBTRACTED FROM OUR ACCOUNTS FOR THE OUTBOUND, CONFIRMED FLIGHT! AFTER TALKING TO A SUPERVISOR THEY SAID THEY WOULD "WAVE" THE FEE. HOW GENEROUS.

Charging for a second bag only makes sense if the airlines also limit the amount of carry on baggage. If no one has noticed, people are carrying on incredible amounts of "stuff" and no one tells them they can't shove it in the bin and ruin your jacket that was neatly laid in there. The carry on stuff is a bigger concern for me than the 2nd bag that is stored underneath. Has anyone weighed what people bring on board?

Let's work on the efficient operation of the boarding and deplaning process! The reason it takes so long to get on the plane, is because the people boarding, whose seats are at the back of the plane, are taking up all the overhead storage with their multiple bags and computers beginning with the overhead compartments at the front of the plane. That's why when the rest of us get on....there is no overhead storage!!! And the games begin, as you try to squeeze your way up and down the crowded aisle to find a spot for your bag. This same olympic event takes place upon landing.....as you try to locate all your bags in the overhead - and those overhead compartments are no where near where you sat!! Let's just ban carry-on luggage. One purse-size bag for everybody - no exception. Just board the plane, find you seat, sit down, fasten your seatbelt and let's keep that line moving! It shouldn't be so hard!

How exciting this all is. Let's keep merging airlines until we have just one great big monopoly so there will be one-stop shopping for all customers. Don't like the fees? Too bad! Take a train or drive. Let's see how far we can push our customers with fees and ridiculous stipulations because they'll need us so much more than we need them. Heck, we're SuperAir! While we're at it, let's make those seats way too small for the average 12 year old so folks get off our planes and need to go straight away to the doctor for twisted spines before going to the House of Mouse. While we're at it, let's hire the most unfriendly welfare moms we can find who don't have a tooth in their heads but own $500 cell phones to communicate with their miserable children while customers are waiting in line. Yes! We have done it! The most unhelpful, unpleasant, and expensive monopo...er, airline! *WEG* They'll never know what hit 'em.

I don't know about Delta, etc but be wary of US Airways, even if you want to travel on non blackout dates they reserve the right to say sorry- we don't want you to use your miles. sucks to be you! I just experienced this with US Airways- they SUCK!

Frequent flyer miles are basically non-existant unless you do a ticket 9-12 months out. I donot have the choice of driving instead of flying because I live in Hawaii. And now to use America Airlines frequent flyer miles to and from Hawaii, they are charging a $150 surcharge each way. This is on top of your miles. And what can you do?....They have you by the gonads and you can't do anything. And if United Airlines does start charging for the second bag, just expect everyone to bring more 'stuff' as carryons. I am so tired of people carrying everything they own on the plane and hitting you with it as they slug down the aisle. I vote for the one bag of minimal size for carryon.

To Nancy: Overhead bins are for carry-on baggage! I find it incredibly rude when fellow travelers take up valuable space with things like hats and jackets--articles that could easily fit under the seat in front of the passenger. I travel with a 20" rollaboard and a briefcase and tuck the briefcase under the seat. This is my arrangement whether on a 2 or 10 day trip (and I'm proud to say I never have to wear the same outfit twice).

I for one am happy to see the addition of a second bag fee. While it certainly isn't my business to police what other passengers pack, if most people are honest with themselves, it is fairly rare that more than one 24" suitcase is necessary for a week-long trip. Extra bags equals extra weight which is extremely critical in areas served by Regional Jets (RJs) or turbo props. When airlines must bump passengers or bags because of weight restrictions, especially common during summer and winter, that costs several times more than the revenue a tourist fare ticket brings in, plus the loss of good will.

I have no problem with the airlines charging for the second bag, but I do have a problem with is that passengers carry on MUCH TOO MUCH STUFF!!
That also should be addressed. It takes forever to get everyone seated. One solution might be to have everyone check in everything except one small bag and quickly put in overhead bin and get SEATED. Thank you

I vote in favor of carry-ons. I fly frequently, and never check my bag. I can't afford to be in a different city than my luggage. I last checked a bag many years ago, flying out of San Francisco. It was stolen by an "inside theft ring" operating at the SFO ramp. The bag was never recovered.

I say, define the LxWxD of one carry-on per passenger, then let us be on our way.

To those who resent carry ons; It's not the passengers fault. Those who carry on luggage do so because the airlines have basically forced them to do so. Checking luggage is now one of the mysteries of the universe - airlines have become so slow at getting checked luggage off the plane and lost luggage is so common why anyone checks luggage is beyond me. Don't even mention the flight delays - causing travelers to miss their connections, thus having no luggage at their destination. If the airlines could solve this mystery folks would check their luggage again.

Most people don't know about the connection, but the CEO of Delta is most likely a target of Andrew Cuomo (NY AG) in his investigation of United Health. Now do you really trust anything the CEO says? He drove Northwest into bankruptcy, bails and goes to United Health Ingenix division and now they are the target of an investigation. So what is really going to happen in a couple of years after he destroys the merged airlines?
